Millwood to Braves?

Friday, May 2, 2008

The Braves will need a replacement in their rotation when John Smoltz heads to the bullpen, and are reportedly looking at Kevin Millwood of the Rangers. So far this season, Millwood is 2-2 with a 3.86 ERA and 27 K. The Rangers and Braves are on pretty good trade terms at the moment, so a deal going down in the next month or so doesn't seem unlikely. However, Millwood has a big contract and that might be hard to convince the Braves to take that on.

A more likely option for the Braves would be Jon Lieber of the Cubs. Lieber is doing very well for the Cubs but might be able to pry him at the deadline for a prospect or two. Another possible option is Josh Fogg of the Reds, who appears on the outs with GM Walk Jocketty.

Rockies sign Castro: To help out with Tulowitzki down, the Rockies have signed Juan Castro to a minor league deal. The Padres and Dodgers were also interested.

Would be a solid move for a team that needs a quality vet. starter. If the Rangers could be a couple of AA pitchers and Cash in return I think that would be sufficient.

Martin Prado,Brent Lillibridge,Chuck James, and Scott Thorman for Millwood, Jason Botts, and 5.5 mil.

Hopefullly if Frank Wren does try to get Kevin Millwood he doesn't over spend to get him. As a Braves blogger and fan I am totally on board with getting Kevin Millwood.

Why would you give up Chuck James, he and Jurjens are productive back of the rotation pitchers. And Martin Prado is not a need for the Rangers. Thorman is a swap for Botts I see.

The Cubs have learned to keep a couple pitchers back to cover for injuries and such. I think you'll find Lieber is going into the rotation very soon. He wants to retire as a Cub, and that's the plan.

The Braves would be stupid to get Fogg, he straight up sucks. And we don't need another old man for the rotation either. That's why we are in the mess we're in now. The Braves aren't actually looking at Millwood, some sports writer in Texas just put in their column that he might be a good fit. But there is no information aside for that to support whether or not the Braves are really interested. I doubt it because of his contract. However, if the BRaves wait until the deadline, I doubt they make any moves at all, because by then they will be so far out of the division, it wouldn't make sense to part with any prospects just so that you can finish in 3rd place. THe Braves are finished, so look to 09, they will have a ton of money off the books, and may sign some quality players then.

The Cubs NEED Lieber to cover while Hill finds his brain at AAA. Assuming he (Hill) gets straightened out, expect Marquis to tank in the second half (if he waits that long) and Lieber can cover for him. I'd like to see Gallegher get a spot start, but I wouldn't let go of Lieber any time soon.
