Blue Jays Ryan Out

Sunday, April 15, 2007

The Blue Jays place B.J. Ryan on the 15 Day Disabled list today with an elbow injury. Ryan already has two blown saves, and had five last year in 42 chances. The Blue Jays called up Jamie Vermilyea and he will work out of the bullpen while Jason Frasor will take over as closer. Ryan signed a five year deal, worth 47 million dollars back in 2005 and has been outstanding since joining the Blue Jays. But pitching in 134 games the past two years might have put some stress on his elbow.

FANTASY SUGGESTION: IF HE IS A FREE AGENT AND YOUR CLOSER ROLE IS WEAK, HE WOULD BE A GOOD PICKUP FOR YOUR TEAM BECAUSE HE WOULD GET SOME SAVES. AND THE BLUE JAYS ARE PLAYING GREAT BASEBALL SO HIS SAVE TOTAL WILL LIKELY GO UP. BUT WAIT FOR HIM TO COME OFF THE DL AND PROVE THAT HE CAN PUT A SERIES OF SAVES TOGETHER.

If BJ Ryan is on the waiver wire in your league, pick him up immediately! When healthy he's a top 5 closer and definitely worth the gamble, but I seriously doubt he's available in anything bigger than a 4 team league.
