Santana Shuts Down Talks, For Good

Wednesday, April 11, 2007

Johan Santana told the Twins today he does not want to talk about a contract anymore, and will wait to hit the open market before he discusses anything. A source close to negotiations says the Twins tried to add on an extra two years to his 4 year, 40 million dollar deal, giving him about 18 million a year. However, if Carlos Zambrano and Barry Zito are going to be receiving 18 million a year, we all know that Johan Santana, two time Cy Young winner in back to back years, deserves atleast 20 million. The Twins will probably wait til next season to consider a trade for him, that is if Santana stands strong with his threat. Then the Twins will check their options, see if Liriano can come back strong and ancor the rotation, before they consider anything with Santana. So far this season, Santana is 2-0 with a 2.77 ERA and 15 K.

UPDATE: SANTANA DENIES REPORT THAT HE HAS CUT OFF NEGOTIATIONS. I REPEAT, JOHAN SANTANA DENIES JON HEYMAN'S REPORT (ABOVE) THAT HE CUT OFF NEGOTIATIONS.
