Diamondbacks To Call Up Scherzer

Sunday, April 27, 2008

Diamondbacks top prospect Max Scherzer is no longer in Triple-A. According to Nick Piecoro, the Diamondbacks have optioned Yusmeiro Petit and called up the hard throwing Max Scherzer. He had a 1.17 ERA in four starts, striking out 38 and walking three in 23 innings. Scherzer appears casted as a closer for the Diamondbacks, but if Micah Owings cannot pitch Friday, they will use him. The bullpen hasn't been taxed much, but why not get him a couple of innings while the team is hitting well.

I got to see this guy pitch a lot while he was an Missouri and I have to say he has exciting stuff. I think this is a great call up by the D-backs.

Is he really going to be closer right away? They are taking it away from Lyon? They have the best record in the game, why make such a drastic change now? Put him in middle relief, or the rotation. But if he can't get regular work, they should leave him in Triple-A to get regular work

to clarify, many believe he will be the diamondbacks closer within the next couple of years because he has a 99 mph fastball. not right away....but soon. he is starter right now.
