- Jayson Stark believes that Bonds will be signed once one of the fourteen AL DH's goes down with an injury. Gary Sheffield could be out longer than expected, so the Tigers could sign him. Joel Sherman of the NY Post thinks the Blue Jays would be nice fit. Signing him would be a way to show the fans they that are really serious about winning. They are in a good position as it is.
- Stark went on to say that Ryan Howard is looking for more money that the Phillies originally thought. The Phillies will likely pay him, but it could lead to a trade. They have Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins, but Howard really does anchor that offense.
- Claudio Vargas and Robinson Tejeda are not drawing too much interest from the Mets, but David Wells is. One NL executive said the Mets would like to have a veteran like Wells in their rotation. Wells pitched decent for the Dodgers and Padres last season, but the Mets are probably better off going after someone like Jon Lieber.
- The Red Sox are looking for another catcher, according to ESPN.com writer Buster Olney. There are not too many catchers out there that could handle the knuckle ball, so it would make sense to bring Mirabelli back. One possibility is Henry Blanco, but the Cubs really like what he is doing with Soto. It is obvious that Jason Varitek is slowing down, and maybe going after someone like Bryan Anderson of the Cardinals would work. Anderson is blocked by Molina and probably won't get a chance to start there.
- The Washington Post believes the Tigers will watch Jon Rauch very closely. However, with Chad Cordero battling injuries, the Nationals might hold on to him. Yes, it is possible they would like to add a prospect or so, but the Nationals are not in that situation anymore. They have put together are pretty solid team, with up and coming stars John Lannan, Elijah Dukes, and Lastings Milledge coming into form.

Bryan Anderson would be nice, as a Red Sox fan. Good find. I agree with the Bonds thing too. The Nationals would likely trade Rauch at the deadline, if at all. But I agree they are not in a position to trade when value is high.
I think when you say jon lieber, you mean veteran pitchers. so marquis too...maybe matt morris?
the nationals assement is right on...
The redsox would like to get a catcher in any deal for Crisp, so the catcher would have to come from a team needing CF or OF in general. A team like the rangers makes most sense, but that trade as deminished and probably wont be picked up due to the Rangers will probably be out of it by May or June.
Every year the Red Sox have the same problem of finding someone to catch Wakefield. Wouldn't it be better to get rid of Wakefield than try to find someone to catch him?
That crossed my mind. But, Wakefield always seems to find a way to put up 13-15 maybe even 16 wins. I do not think the Red Sox want to lose that and I do not think they could get anything solid in return. They should have just kept mirabelli.
howard will get his contract deal after pat burell's contract is over and I think they still owe jim thome some money from when he was with philly. So howard will stay in philly till he retires hopefully.
gee here is a thought Theo, if the Red Sox are looking for a "knuckleball" catcher, then why did they release Doug Mirabelli? Seems stupid to me.
ryan howard is clearly big papi in waiting....he has the worst foot work at first base I have ever seen. Welcome to the American League and the DH, pal!
I'm sure Epstein would love to undo the Coco Crisp for Kelly Shoppach deal (interesting how the other players in that swap became non-factors).
yeah, i agree with howard. Adding him to a lineup as a DH could very well improve his numbers. As for the catcher thing, I assume they will bring mirabelli back.
trust me Shoppach has become a very good backup catcher for the Indians. I am glad now the Indians didn't trade him to Pittsburgh for Bay after all.
Even though I do agree howard would be good as a DH but he's one of the core players in the phillies team. I don't think the phil's would trade him not unless they get a deal they can't refuse. And they don't have any good 1st basemen with power in there minor league system that they could bring up (I maybe wrong). He had a good 2005,2006 season and his 2007 season was plague by an injury and striking out 190+ times.
