Boston Globe: 6/72 for Matsuzaka?

Matsuzaka's agent Scott Boras is reportedly seeking a six year, 72 million dollar deal for his client. It seems reasonable, considering he wanted a three year 15 million dollar deal just last week. The Red Sox need to get this deal done before the Winter Meetings so they can pursue other goals. After spending a record 51.1 million dollars just to negotiate with him, they could give the unproven pitcher 12 million for six years.

Red Sox to Offer Nixon Arbitration

According to the Boston Globe, the Red Sox are leaning towards offering arbitration to OF Trot Nixon. Nixon, who would add to an already deep outfield could make 7-8 million in arbitration and it appears that not too many teams are inquiring about him. The Indians went after and Dave Dellucci and that seemed to be the best bet for Nixon. If the Red Sox trade Manny, their outfield would look something like Wily Mo Pena in left, Coco Crisp in center, and J.D. Drew in right, assuming they sign him.

A's Likely to Land Piazza

Phillies GM Pat Gillick said the Phillies have no interest in signing Mike Piazza. The only other team that has expressed interest in him is the A's. The A's would use him as DH, like they did with Frank Thomas. Piazza, who is looking for a two year deal, will likely sign with the A's after Friday's deadline. Piazza batted .282 with 22 HR and 68 RBI.

Brewers Consider Arbitration for Graffanino

The Brewers are mulling the idea of offering Tony Graffanino arbitration before tonight's deadline. Brewers GM Doug Melvin signed Craig Counsell but may consider Graffanino as a utility infielder. Graffanino is a Class A free agent, and the Brewers would get a first round draft pick, and a sandwich pick between the 1st and 2nd rounds as compensation. Melvin commented on the situation saying "We're trying to decide if we're going to offer Tony arbitration," Melvin said. "The draft picks are tempting." The Padres are interested in signing Graffanino after he had a great two months with the Brewers. Season wise, Graffanino batted .274 with 7 HR and 59 RBI.

No Arbitration Offer to Bonds

The Giants are expected to not offer arbitration to slugger Barry Bonds tonight. However, it does not mean they have to wait until May 1st if they want to talk with him again. Under the new Basic Agreement, they can continue to negotiate with him but do not need to take anything to arbitration. The A's and Padres have talked with agent Jeff Borris, but nothing has transpired from there. Bonds batted .270 26 HR and 77 RBI. He is 22 homeruns away from breaking Hank Aaron's homerun record.

Rockies Lookin' For Relievers

The Rockies are looking to build their bullpen and have inquired about several pitchers including LaTroy Hawkins, Rudy Seanez, Jose Mesa, and Tom Martin. According to the Denver Post, they have already made offers to Mesa and Martin. The Rockies, who have to look at who they sign differently because of hitter friendly Coors Field, will look to build up their bullpen to back their weak, but young rotation. In 60 innings, Hawkins went 3-2 with a 4.48 ERA and 27 K. Seanez went 3-3 with a 4.92 ERA and 54 K. Mesa went 1-5 with a 3.86 ERA and 39 K. Martin went 2-0 with a 5.07 ERA and 46 K. They all expect to receive one to two year deals.

Cubs Make Offer to Lugo

Since the Blue Jays signed Royce Clayton, they will no longer pursue Julio Lugo. So, the Red Sox, Dodgers, Giants, Mets, and now Cubs are in hot pursuit of Julio Lugo. Lugo, who played under Lou Piniella in Tampa, said he would be willing to play center field. If they sign him, it makes Jacque Jones or Cesar Izturis expendable depending on whether the Cubs are willing to play Soriano in center. There was no report on money with a deal but Lugo has asked for four years, 32 million. I bet the Cubs offered right around their, probably a little bit more. The article, from ESPN Insider said:

Nov 29 - Toronto's pursuit of Julio Lugo ended when the Blue Jays signed Royce Clayton to a one-year deal. But the Cubs remain interested and have made Lugo a multi-year offer, according to ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick.

Boston is looking at Lugo to replace departed shortstop Alex Gonzalez, and San Francisco continues to maintain a line of communication with Lugo's agents. While the Giants are looking at Rich Aurilia, Mark Loretta and Ray Durham as second base possibilities, they've talked about signing Lugo to play second and eventually shifting him to shortstop when Omar Vizquel retires.

Barry Zito Meets With Rangers

Scott Boras and Barry Zito went Texas yesterday to meet with Rangers owner Tom Hicks and GM Jon Daniels. As many as ten teams are pursuing Zito; however, many have expected Zito to sign with the Mets because of the close relationship with former pitching coach Rick Peterson. But, new Rangers manager Ron Washington, who worked for the A's all of since Zito was called up may have some influence in his decision. Zito has said he either wants to pitch in Los Angeles or New York. Zito was 16-10 with a 3.83 ERA in 34 starts and 221 innings with the Athletics last year. The southpaw has a career record of 11-1 with a 3.75 ERA at Ameriquest Field. The Rangers still have interest in re-signing Vicente Padilla and have talked about other free-agent pitchers, including Ted Lilly and Miguel Batista.

Yankees Pursuing Vicente Padilla

The Yankees have had conversations with free-agent right-hander Vicente Padilla, who was 15-10 with a 4.50 ERA for the Texas Rangers last year. A baseball official said that Padilla is one of many pitchers they have interest in. Ted Lilly, Andy Pettitte, Roger Clemens, and Gil Meche. However, after giving 26 million to the Tigers (Japan), they may turn their attention to someone a little less expensive. Lilly is looking for a four year deal 40-45 million dollars, and no one is sure wheather Pettitte will pitch next season? They will probably concede Lilly to the Blue Jays and turn to Pettitte if they lose out on Meche and Padilla. Gil Meche and Vicente Padilla are looking for 8-9 million. Padilla and Meche are being pursued by most of the same teams. The list includes the Blue Jays, Royals, Cubs, Rangers, Giants, Dodgers, Pirates, and Diamondbacks. Many other teams have mentioned the two players as players they plan to pursue.

Yankees to Talk With Clemens, Pettitte

According to the New York Post, the Yankees are looking to talk with Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte about pitching for them next season. They are so many questions to answer about their return it is almost unlikely they Yankees will holdout on them. Will Pettitte retire? Will Clemens retire? Do they want to move back to New York? They are too many holes for the Yankees that Cashman may not have the time to wait on their decisions. The Yankess, who have three of five spots filled in their rotation, are also talking with Gil Meche and Ted Lilly. However, Lilly and Meche are expecting to both command close to 10 million.

Red Sox to Sign Hideki Okajima

When Larry Luccino went to Japan, he focused on Daisuke Matsuzaka, however, that is not all he worked on. Luccino discussed a deal with left-handed specialist, although he has been used as a set-up man and could grow into that role for the Sox. He is said not to throw very hard, but has an amazing curveball. By signing Okajima, it could probably help their chances of lowering the price for Matsuzaka.

Dbacks Meet Mulder, Schmidt's List Grows

The Diamondbacks met with Mark Mulder and his agent today at Chase Field. Mulder lives in Arizona and is friends with Kirk Gibson and Bob Melvin. Mulder, 29, is coming off an injury-shortened season during which he went 6-7 with a 7.14 ERA. If he was to get any deal from the Diamondbacks, it would be an incentive laden contract. Cardinals GM Walt Jocketty told reporters that he is interest in Jason Schmidt. Although Schmidt has said he wants to stay near the West Coast, the Cardinals, Cubs, and Yankees have all expressed interest in him. The Mariners and Dodgers are the only teams that have shown interest on the West Coast. The Mariners are the favorite to land him because Schmidt grew up in Seattle.

Mora Recruiting Gonzalez, Huff

Orioles 3rd baseman Melvin Mora has done some recruiting of his own. He is urging his team to sign Luis Gonzalez and Aubrey Huff. Well, signing both would be stretch considering they spent 42 million dollars on the bullpen. Even signing one would help their team. With Tejada, Mora, Markais, Patterson, Roberts, and now a solid pitching staff, they are laying the ground work to make a run at the playoffs. Gonzalez, 40, batted .271 with 15 HR and 73 RBI's. His family lives in Scottsdale so moving to Baltimore may be a stretch. Gonzalez is drawing interest from the Cardinals, Rangers, Orioles, and many others. Huff, 29, batted .266 with 21 HR and 65 RBI's with the Devil Rays and Astros. Huff is also drawing a lot of interest from other teams. Although these are the only two names that came up, the Orioles plan to add a big bat at the Winter Meetings.

Indians Pursuing Foulke

The Indians have made several multi-year offers to different players, one of them Keith Foulke, but it is unclear whether they will ink him. The Indians have talked with Foulke and Foulke has talked with many members of the Indians. However, Foulke supposedly wants to move closer to his family in Texas and Arizona. Foulke went 3-0 with a 4.03 ERA in 44 games this year.

Also, the Indians did not post for Kei Igawa. They thought he would be more useful in the National League and did not feel he could help their pitching staff for that kind of money.

Borowski Flunks Physical

The Phillies offered closer Joe Borowski a multi-year deal but he failed a physical that made the Phillies back out of a long term deal. They found some "wear and tear" in his shoulder and felt they could not commit long term. The Phillies, along with many other teams, will consider a short term deal. In 72 games, Borowski went 3-3 with 36 saves and a 3.75 ERA.

Blue Jays Sign Clayton

The Blue Jays and Royce Clayton have agreed to a 1 year deal, worth 1.75 million dollars. Clayton will play shortstop moving Aaron Hill to second base. Clayton began last season with the Nationals but was traded to the Reds in June. In 137 games, he hit .258 with two home runs and 40 RBIs.

Yankees Will Try For Willis

According to the New York Post, the Yankees plan to package a deal for Dontrelle Willis. Although several Marlins officials said he is not on the market, a trade consisting of Melky Cabrera, Humberto Sanchez, and several other players may be able to do it. I doubt the Marlins will strike a deal, he is the best pitcher they have had in 15 years and he is still very young. Although he struggle this year going 12-12 with a 3.87 ERA. Career wise, he has gone 58-39, with a 3.44 ERA. Going to New York, would definitely turn him into the pitcher he was in 2005. With all the run production and above average defense, he would become the best number 2 starter in the game.

No Offers Yet

Tom Glavine, who started his career with the Braves, expressed his interest in returning to Atlanta. However, he has received no offer from the Braves. In fact, they have not even had any formal discussions with Glavine and his agent. Glavine told the Mets that he would decide before the Winter Meetings. Five days away, he still has not said anything, but his family has voiced their opinion. They have said they want him to return to Atlanta so he can be close to his family and not have to move his family back and forth to New York.

Drew Nears Deal With Red Sox

According to major industy sources, the Red Sox and Drew are closing in on a four year deal worth 14-15 million annually. The deal also includes an option for a fifth year. Drew would play right field for the Red Sox and bat fifth if Manny stays, but will probably bat forth because it appears Manny is on his way out. The signing will have to wait until December 1st so the Red Sox will not have to forfeit draft picks as compensation to the Dodgers. The deal will be announced before the Winter Meetings which will take place over December 4th-December 7th in Orlando.

Teams Pursuing Ohka

The Mariners, Red Sox, Diamondbacks and Nationals are also believed to have some interest in Ohka, who could receive a multi-year deal. Diamondbacks GM has said he is meeting with Ohka's reps next week to discuss a deal. However, with the low amount of pitchers, a second tier pitcher, possibly third tier could receive a 3-4 yr deal worth 7-8 million dollars. Ohka, 30, went 4-5 with a 4.82 ERA in 18 starts for the Milwaukee Brewers last season, one in which he missed two months to a shoulder impingement.

Red Sox Cannot Meet Boras' Demands?

The Red Sox bid 51.1 million dollars for WBC MVP Daisuke Matsuzaka and it appears that Boras' demands may be too high for the Red Sox to support. Red Sox president Larry Lucchino went to Japan to discuss a deal in which the Lions would help subsidize some of his salary. However, MLB officials said that would not be allowed. If the Red Sox are unable to reach an agreement with Matsuzaka by December 14, the money will be returned to the Red Sox and Matsuzaka will have to wait another year. However, Lucchino said in Japan that the Red Sox have sent a fair and comprehensive offer to Matsuzaka's agent, Scott Boras. Scott Boras is asking for a three year deal, making 14-15 million each year. However, the Red Sox are looking for a 10-12 million dollar deal with more years. The Red Sox may have to compromise a deal giving Matsuzaka more money, but in doing that, Boras would accept a four year deal.

Offseason Day 16

Today was another big day in baseball. The Orioles and Cardinals both added four players to their rosters. The Orioles added Chad Bradford, Kevin Millar, Paul Bako, and Scott Williamson. The Cardinals signed Adam Kennedy, Kip Wells, Gary Bennett, and Eli Marrero. The Yankees posted the highest bid for Kei Igawa at 26 million dollars. They now have exclusive negotiating rights with him. It was reported by the San Fransisco Chronicle that the Cubs have made an offer to Jason Schmidt; however, a Cubs official said the two sides have been talking, but no offer was made. The Angels and White Sox have been discussing a trade that would send Crede and Garcia to the Angels for Santana and Figgins. Finally, the Padres have withdrawn their offer to Craig Counsell and Counsell continues to negotiate with the Brewers.

Padres Withdraw Offer to Counsell

A report earlier today indicated that the Padres had reached a preliminary agreement with Craig Counsell for two years. However, Counsell's agent Barry Meister said the report was "premature" and that the Padres had taken their offer off the table. Brewers GM Bob Melvin has indicated that he is in negotiations with Meister to sign Counsell to atleast a two year deal. In 105 games in 2006, he batted .255 with 14 doubles, four homers and 30 RBI.

Orioles Reach Agreement With Millar

The Orioles have reached an agreement with Kevin Millar. The Orioles gave Millar a one year, 2.75 million dollar deal with an option for one more. Millar hit .272 in 430 at bats. This makes the Orioles signing total today to four. Two relievers and two position players.

Lugo to Red Sox? Not So Fast...

The Boston Herald is reporting that the Red Sox have made a formal offer to Julio Lugo. However, after making an offer, it appears that negotiations have stopped, and the Mets and Dodgers are working hard to sign him. Although Lugo has expressed his interest to play in Boston, the Mets or Dodgers may be able to lure him away from Boston and to their respective towns by their aggressive negotiation style. Lugo is seeking a a four year, 32 million dollar deal. The Blue Jays and Cubs are other teams that appear interested.

Orioles Busy: Sign Scott Williamson, Paul Bako

The Orioles signed Chad Bradford last night to a 3 year worth 10 million dollars, while today, they signed Scott Williamson to a one year, 900,000 dollar deal plus incentives. Williamson was 2-4 last year with a 5.72 ERA while playing for both the Cubs and Padres.They also signed backup catcher Paul Bako. Bako, 34, hit .209 last season with no homers and 10 RBIs in 56 games for the Kansas City Royals, the eighth major league team in which he has played. Known for his defense, Bako has a career average of .236 with 14 homers and 143 RBIs over nine major league seasons. Bako will probably be backup for Ramon Hernandez. Along with Williamson, the Orioles have added Chad Bradford, Danny Baez, and Jamie Walker to their bullpen.

Yankees Post 25 Million For Igawa

Does that surprise you? After losing out on Daisuke Matsuzaka to their rivals the Red Sox, the Yankees needed to make a splash. I do not know how big a splash this is considering his record in Japan was only 14-9. Yes he did have a 2.97 ERA and has been able to rack up innings the past six years in Japan, but, he is a number five starter, not even 15 million is worth it for a number 5 starter. The two main reasons the Yankees posted so high for Igawa is one: They needed to nearly match the Red Sox, and two: they need a pitcher. Other teams that were interest were: Padres, Mets, Cubs, Rangers, Dodgers, Mariners, and Indians.

Wolf Signs With Dodgers, but Cubs and Cards Made Offer

Randy Wolf signed with the Dodgers for 1 yr, 7.5 million dollars. However, a source close to negotiations said the Cubs and Cardinals offered a 3 yr. 21-24 million dollars. Wolf selected the Dodgers probably because of the security in the deal. He could re-cooperate in L.A., and then hit the market next year seeking 8-9 million. The Cardinals today signed Kip Wells while the Cubs made a formal offer to Jason Schmidt.

Padres Sign Craig Counsell

The Padres have reached a preliminary agreement with infielder Craig Counsell. It is a two year deal, but money was not disclosed. Counsell batted .255 with 4 HR, 30 RBI, and 15 SB. He would replace Barfield at second. The Padres also posted a bid for Kei Igawa. The Padres bid over 10 million and the winning bid was announced at 25 million. Officials will announce the winning bid tonight or tomorrow.

Cubs Make Offer to Schmidt

According to SI.com, the Cubs have made a 3 yr. 45 million dollar offer to Jason Schmidt. I reported this last week hearing it from ESPN 1000. I guess Hendry has officially made a formal offer. Schmidt has expressed his interest in staying on the west coast, but that could all change come the Winter Meetings. The Yankees, Mets, Dodgers, and Mariners have also shown interest in signing him. Schmidt is from Seattle so the Mariners may have the edge; however, with the way the Cubs have been spending, it might draw Schmidt to the new powerhouse in Chicago. The Cubs are also interested in Gil Meche.

Cardinals Sign Kennedy, Wells

Today the Cardinals signed Adam Kennedy and Kip Wells. Adam Kennedy signed a three year, and Kip Wells signed a 2, possibly three year deal. The amount of money was not announced. They also signed Eli Marrero to a minor league deal, and Gary Bennett to a back up for Molina. This should help the Cardinals considering their middle infield will be the best in the NL Central, probably the whole NL. Kennedy and Eckstein are now back together like they were in Anaheim. Wells will be a nice addition to the rotation, and should have a decent few year behind the great defense and hitting.

Ervin Santana and Chone Figgins to Chicago?

According to the LA Times, the Angels have been discussing a trade that would send Ervin Santana and Chone Figgins to the White Sox for Joe Crede and Freddy Garcia. Although this trade seems to better than the "Figgins for Crede" trade, I still think it favors the Angels. Santana, who will be 25 in two weeks, went 16-8 with a 4.28 ERA and 141 K. He pitched in 204.0 innings, an impressive amount. Freddy Garcia went 17-9 with a 4.53 ERA and 135 K. He pitched in 216.1 innings. Crede, hit 30 home runs this year and would easily fit in behind Vlad in that lineup. Garcia would be slotted in that rotation which would only make their pitching staff stronger. Yes, Garcia will make 10 million next year while Santana will make 500,000, he may be reaching his prime. His numbers have only gone up and if he does indeed get traded with Crede, he will pitch for a team with plenty of power, defense, and bullpen.

The Angels would have to add on money for Garcia and money expected to be owed to Crede, but it would drastically improve their team and slot them as the number 1 team in the AL West. The White Sox, would place top prospect Josh Fields at third, and Brandon McCarthy in the rotation. Fields may turn into a bright star, but he would only develop in 2007. The rotation may be weakened by the departure of Garcia, but McCarthy have proven himself a number 3 or number 4 pitcher in a rotation.

Pirates to Pursue Jeff Suppan

According to Pittsburgh Post Gazette, the Pirates plan to pursue Jeff Suppan. He is expected to make 8-9 million when the Pirates only have 15 million to spend. The reason he is drawing so much attention is because of his impressive first half of the season, and his excellent play in the off season. Several other teams are reportedly pursuing him so the Pirates might have a hard time luring him to Pittsburgh. The Pirates have two goals this off season-one, two acquire a lefty power hitter, and two, a starting pitcher. Suppan "fits the bill" for pitching, but it will depend on whether the Pirates really want to go all out for him. He will probably receive a 3 yr. 24-25 million dollar deal.

Orioles to Sign Chad Bradford

According to the Baltimore Sun, the Orioles are closing in on a deal to sign Chad Bradford. The deal is a three year deal, probably 16-18 million dollars. Bradford is one of the best relievers in the game but has had reoccurring back problems. That's why three years may be too long. However, the Orioles are looking to build their bullpen which is good because of the week rotation they have.

Cubs Talking With Schmidt, Post For Igawa?

According to the Chicago Tribune, the Cubs have had numerous talks with Jason Schmidt's representatives about pitching for them next season. Although Schmidt has suggested he would like to stay on the West Coast, he may change his mind. I think both sides will wait until next week to see what the market is offering. It was also reported that the Cubs were considering bidding for Igawa who's post is expected to top 10 million. The Yankees, Mets, Giants, Padres, and Dodgers have all expressed interest in signing him. The Cubs will probably tell Soriano they do not want him to play in the Winter League, in fear that he will get injured. Can you blame them? If I just gave a guy 136 million for the next eight years I would be extremely over protective.

Offseason Day 15

What a way to start off the new week. Let me just start by saying, I and all of the baseball world woke up today thinking Rod Barajas was a Blue Jay. No more, Rod Barajas and his deal with the Blue Jays fell through this afternoon and he is now in need of a job. The Blue Jays, however, were quick to sign Gregg Zaun after hearing they did not have a catcher anymore. In other news, the Indians announced that they have reached an agreement with David Dellucci. The deal is pending a physical, but is a three year 11.5 million dollar deal. Indians GM Mark Shapiro also said that he has no intention of trading Jake Westbrook. Mike Piazza and the A's are in serious discussions about a one year, possibly a two year deal. Also, the Angels have suggested that they would offer Chone Figgins for Joe Crede. I do not see the White Sox accepting a deal like this, but if the Angels throw in a prospect or a reliever, a deal may be in reach. Furthermore, the Phillies and Dodgers have made their signings official. The Phillies have announced the signing of Adam Eaton. Eaton signed a three year deal, worth 24 million. The Dodgers signed Randy Wolf to a one year 7.5 million dollar deal with an option for one more. Finally, the bidding for Kei Igawa ended at 5:00 ET and it appears that one of the New York teams will win. Teams that were reportedly going to bid on him were the: Yankees, Mets, Cubs, Mariners, Rangers, and Dodgers. We are expected to find out the winner sometime this week.

Barajas to Toronto No More

As of this morning, the Blue Jays were planning on announcing the signing of Barajas Wednesday. However, the deal has been called off and Gregg Zaun and Rod Barajas have switched places, in terms of free agency. Zaun has now been signed and will be Toronto's starting catcher, while Barajas will be sought after as a backup. The Yankees, Red Sox, and Giants will now turn their attention away from Zaun, and to Barajas.

Blue Jays to Resign Gregg Zaun

According to ESPN, the Blue Jays are close to signing Gregg Zaun to platoon with Barajas. Zaun, who was drawing interest as a starter, turned it down to be a part time catcher for the Jays. He was also drawing interest from the Yankees. By staying in Toronto, he will definitely see more playing time then he would have in New York. It is possible the deal with Barajas fell through, but I will let this uncoil itself.

Indians Sign David Dellucci

According to FOXSports.com, the Indians and Dellucci have agreed to a three year 11.5 million dollar deal. So much for Trot, the deal is pending a physical which could happen as soon as Thursday. Dellucci batted .292 with 13 HR and 39 RBI.

Padres Interested in Maddux

According to FOXSports.com, the Padres are interested in signing Greg Maddux. Maddux, who went 15-14 with the Cubs and Dodgers, is seeking a two year, 22.5 million dollar deal.

Indians Won't Trade Jake Westbrook

Indians GM Mark Shapiro told the Plain Dealer he has no interest in trading Jake Westbrook for bullpen help. However, they are looking to acquire Scot Shields from Anaheim, and are also looking to sign Trot Nixon, who has been with the Red Sox.

Cubs Chatter

Cubs GM Jim Hendry has been in contact with Vicente Padilla and Gil Meche about pitching for the Cubs next season. Meche and Padilla are both asking around 8-10 million over 3-4 years. However, both are drawing a lot of interest. The Cubs may have a little edge with Meche because of Piniella's influence he had on players and Meche used to pitch for Piniella. On the other hand, the Blue Jays might overpay to fill the void in the rotation. Vicente Padilla is represented by Paul Kinzer, who represents Ramirez, which may also help the Cubs' negotiations with him. However, the Mets, Phillies, and Rangers have all shown serious interest in bringing him in. Padilla went 15-10 over 200.0 innings. Jim Hendry is also looking for an outfielder. It is known that the Cubs want Alfonso Soriano in right field so that could mean that Jacque Jones is gone. But, Julio Lugo, who also played for Piniella, said he was willing to play center. He has also expressed interest in playing short stop for the Red Sox. The Cubs do not want to commit to anyone for a long time because they have Felix Pie waiting for his shot. Jones said he would be willing to play center but Hendry probably wants to trade him for pitching because of the amount of money he is owed over the next two years. Cliff Floyd has also said he would like to play for the Cubs, and the Cubs appear to be in serious discussions with him to platoon in left field with the young Matt Murton. He will want a similar deal to what Frank Thomas got from Oakland. A deal, if any, should be struck by the end of the week, possibly at the Winter Meetings. It was also not known, but the Cubs designated Ryan O'Malley and Miguel Negron to make room for Clay Rapada and Rocky Cherry. The only surprise prospect left off the roster was C Jake Fox.

Blue Jays Chatter

Toronto GM J.P. Ricciardi has begun to burn his thrusters in the free agent market going after 2B Adam Kennedy, P Gil Meche, P Mark Mulder, and P Vicente Padillia. If the Blue Jays are able to sign Kennedy, who is being pursued by five other teams, they would be able to move Aaron Hill to shortstop. Kennedy batted .273 with 4 HR, 55 RBI, and 16 SB. The Jays have contacted the agents of Meche, Mulder, and Padilla and believe that they are the favorite to land Meche. However, numerous teams have been in discussions with Meche, Padilla, and even Mulder. Meche, who played under Lou Piniella, has expressed his desire to play in Chicago. However, he may want to stay in the AL. The Blue Jays may also over pay to acquire a pitcher to fill Lilly's spot. According to the Sun-Times, the Cubs and Paul Kinzer, Padilla's agent, have had many discussions about Padilla pitching in Chicago. Although Ricciardi has contacted all these pitchers, more than ten teams have talked with Padilla about pitching for them. Padilla, Mulder, and Meche are all expected to make decisions during or soon after the Winter Meetings.

Piazza to Oakland, Figgins to Chicago?

According to Buster Olney, the A's and Mike Piazza are in serious negotiations to bring him in to either catch, or DH next season. With the Angels signing of Gary Matthews Jr. to play center and bat leadoff, the odd man out is Chone Figgins. A possible scenario would be to trade Figgins to Chicago for third baseman Joe Crede. Figgins batted .267 with 9 HR and 62 RBI. I do not see how it would be a fair trade Figgins for Crede. Crede batted .283 with 30 HR and 94 RBI. The Angels would probably have to offer Figgins and a prospect to land Crede.

Phillies Sign Adam Eaton

According to ESPN.com, the Phillies have signed Adam Eaton to a three year deal worth at least 24 million dollars. The details of the contract suggest he could make up to 33 million dollars. Eaton went 7-4 in 13 starts with the Rangers last year.

Red Sox Lowball Matsuzaka?

According the Boston Herald, the Red Sox initial offer to Daisuke Matsuzaka offended Scott Boras and his client. Boras wants 15 million over three years when the Red Sox offered 7-8 million. They have until December 15 to work out a deal and they will have to compromise on price and years. Boras wants a three year deal, while the Red Sox are looking more at a 5 or 6 year deal.

Today was another day full of rumors and speculation. Trot Nixon and Scott Schoeneweis are drawing a lot of interest from teams all around the MLB. The Red Sox are letting Nixon walk, so a team like the Phillies could go after him after losing out on Soriano and Lee. The Rangers met with Mulder's agents to talk about a deal. Mulder, who will probably not be ready for Opening Day is surprisingly drawing a lot of interest from teams. The Dodgers appear to be the front runners to land Randy Wolf. Also, the Orioles have agreed in principle with Baez but the deal is pending a physical. The biggest rumor of the day is that Manny Ramirez has come up in trade rumors with the Giants. But there were no transactions today.

Manny to Giants?

Just speculation. The rumor that said the Giants were in discussions with the Red Sox about acquiring Manny Ramirez was confirmed earlier today from Red Sox sources. Ramirez, 34, is a .314 career hitter who has hit at least 33 home runs with at least 100 RBIs in each of the last nine seasons. Money would be one of the many problems. Ramirez is owed $14 million and $16 million, plus a total of $8 million in deferred salary, over the final two seasons of the eight-year, $168 million contract he signed with Boston. Also, he would have to waive his no trade clause and would have to be willing to switch to right field, if they sign Barry Bonds. The Red Sox, in need of a short stop could ask for Omar Vizquel, and relief. I do not see a deal happening, unless the Red Sox would accept Vizquel and a bundle of prospects. But, the Giants do not have a shortstop to replace Vizquel. A source described the talks as preliminary, so do not expect anything soon, probably nothing at all.

Danny Baez Signs With Orioles

The Baltimore Sun is reporting that Danny Baez and the Orioles have agreed to a three year deal. The Orioles bullpen will be a lot better now with Walker and Baez. The question is, who will be the closer? Baez, who has 111 saves in six big league seasons, will probably take Ray's spot as closer. The deal is pending a physical.

Dodgers, Randy Wolf Close?

According to FOXSPORTS.com, the Dodgers and Randy Wolf are nearing a one year deal. The Dodgers are pursuing Wolf in case they lose out on Maddux, who is expected to want Mussina money(2/22.5). Wolf, 30, who missed a year due to surgery and then came back strong for the Phillies going 4-0. "From 2000 to 2003, Wolf went 48-39 with a 3.88 ERA, averaging 195 innings pitched and 165 strikeouts per season. In eight major-league seasons, he is 69-60 with a 4.21 ERA." He has proven he can pitch and I think teams are not worried about the risk with Wolf and his elbow. I think Wolf is a good pickup though, the Dodgers have great defense, especially with Juan Pierre in center, and Wolf can really thrive off that.

Rangers Contact Mulder

Although Mulder probably won't be fully recovered by the time of opening day, he is still drawing a lot of interest from a lot of teams. The Rangers, Giants, Diamondbacks, Padres, Dodgers, Indians, Mets, Devil Rays and Orioles have all shown interest in acquiring him. The Rangers met with him in Arizona to discuss a possible deal. He will most likely receive a one year, incentive laden contract. Mulder went 6-7 with a 7.14 ERA and 50 K. He pitched in 93.1 innings before injuring his left rotator cuff. His return is expected around May, possibly June.

Nixon, Schoeneweis Drawing Interest

According to the Boston Globe, the Phillies, Orioles, Indians and A's have all contacted Nixon's agent about playing for them next season. The Red Sox seem set on letting him walk, as they are pursuing J.D. Drew. Nixon batted .268 with 8 HR and 52 RBI. Now that Soriano and Lee have signed their deals and Drew is in negotiations with the Red Sox, teams will focus on acquiring Nixon or Dellucci. Scott Schoeneweis has received calls from the The Indians, Tigers, and Red Sox as a possible set-up man or maybe closer. The Indians and Red Sox are both in need of a closer but would probably prefer Schoeneweis as their set-up man. Schoeneweis went 4-2 with a 4.88 ERA with 4 SV and 29 K. He pitched in 71 games, an accomplishment for any reliever. He is expected to make 3-4 million a year.

Brewers Acquire Johnny Estrada

The Brewers traded Doug Davis and a pair of prospects, lefty Dana Eveland and outfielder David Krynzel for Johnny Estrada, right-handed starter Claudio Vargas and right-handed reliever Greg Aquino. Estrada, who was an All-Star, and starter Doug Davis highlight the trade.

WHO WINS?
After checking over stats and receiving feedback from baseball fans, I have come to the conclusion that the trade helps neither team. It could help the Diamondbacks in the long run if Dana Eveland comes through. But, Krynzel is next to nothing and Davis is mediocre at best, and is a free agent after this year. Yes, Estrada will be an upgrade a catcher, but defensively, he is losing his quickness. The Brewers do improve their bullpen, and Vargas might improve in the NL Central pitching in a similar type park to Arizona. However, both pitchers are very similar and Aquino will not make a huge dent with the new club. Below are some comparative stats of Vargas and Davis and how they did vs. the division which they will be playing in next year. Overall, the deal as it sounds today will not effect anyone drastically. So, it is to early to say either the Brewers or Diamondbacks as the clear cut winner.
