Suppan Goes Distance In Emotional Outing

Monday, April 30, 2007

New Brewers pitcher goes to the mound for the first time not only against his former team, but just a day after he lost a close friend and teammate Josh Hancock. The Cardinals take the field for the first time since losing teammate Josh Hancock in an automobile accident and just couldn't connect against Jeff Suppan. Suppan, who is now 4-2 with a 2.55 ERA, pitched his best performance of the year, and not only that, threw his first complete game since 2003. With help from Prince Fielder, who was 2-4 with a double and homerun, and two RBI performances from Johnny Estrada and Kevin Mench, the Brewers were able to improve to 16-9, dropping the Cardinals to 10-14. Now you may think it is early and the this happens every year, where the Brewers or Reds dominate the first month and then their lead quickly diminishes, but you are mistaken. The Brewers revamped their team and have young players who are starting to breakout. While the Cardinals, although having been hit with this terrible loss, are lacking quality pitching. Same with the Astros, who bargained on Woody Williams, who is 0-4 on the year. The Cubs have had great outings from their starters, but their relievers can't seem to hold any leads. But the Brewers have a strong staff, and great hitting, led by Prince Fielder, with help from Geoff Jenkins. Although it is still somewhat early, the Brewers may have sole possession of the lead for the next months to come.

Interview with Devil Rays Pitcher David Price

Vanderbilt pitcher and pitching prospect David Price was nice enough to sit down and answer some questions for MLB Rumors through email. This season, the Vanderbilt Commodores are 39-8, 15-6 SEC. Jim Callis over at Baseball America believes that the consensus around baseball is that Price is the best prospect coming into the draft, but knows the draft has a lot of depth. The Devil Rays have usually gone towards hitting, but Price is too hard to pass up. He has been clocked at hitting 98 on the radar gun, with a slider topping at 88. Not only that, but he has outstanding control. I would like to thank him again for donating his time to answer these questions.

ELI: What is it like pitching in Tennessee, where you grew up?

DAVID: Pitching in Tennessee where I grew up is awesome. That's why I went to Vandy so people that watched me grow up and play baseball would still be able to do that.

ELI: Do you notice scouts during games? Does it bother you?

DAVID: No that's more of something you notice when you are in high school. Now you tune that stuff out and you never even see them. So no it does not bother me.

ELI: Now that the draft is a month away, are you looking forward to potentially going pro?

DAVID: Right now, no. My mind is completely set on Vanderbilt Baseball and until our season is over it will not be on professional baseball.

ELI: Growing up in a state where there is no baseball team, do you have a favorite baseball team?

DAVID: Yes my favorite team was the Braves. I guess because they are good and were the closest team to me.

ELI: If you weren't a pitcher, what position would you be?

DAVID: Somewhere in the outfield.

ELI: Were you always a pitcher, when did you start playing?

DAVID: I started playing when I was 2 and a half. I would play by myself in the back yard. I guess I started pitching around the age of 10 or 11.

ELI: Do you have a favorite player now?

DAVID: D Train [Dontrelle Willis]

ELI: How's Tim Corbin? Do you think he has molded you into the player you are over the past three years?

DAVID: Yes definitely. He is the man. He just has that something special about him that makes you want to give 110% percent every practice and every game.

ELI: You wear number 14? Is that number significant?

DAVID: No, that is just the number they gave me.

ELI: How do upperclassmen treat the younger guys? Do they embrace them and help them? Or do they help them but keep to themselves?

DAVID: Here at Vanderbilt, we don't put players into classes. Everyone here is looked as equals and everyone acts like the same. Upperclassmen help the younger guys out and the younger guys can also help the upperclassmen out.

ELI: What is the chemistry like in the clubhouse?

DAVID: Unreal. This is the best team I have ever played on. Everyone in there has one common goal and that is to win Omaha.

ELI: Is there anywhere you hope to go before the draft?

DAVID: No, not really.

A's Acquire Langerhans

Sunday, April 29, 2007

The Braves traded outfielder Ryan Langerhans to the A's in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. Following the trade, the Braves purchased the contract of Willie Harris from Triple-A. To make room for Langerhans, the A's optioned pitcher Dallas Braden to Triple-A. Langerhans has struggled this season, batting .049 in 19 games, but Billy Beane must see something in him, like he did with Chris Denorfia, or he is just restocking his outfield for next season. Langerhans will backup in right and left field.

Cardinals Mourn Loss of Josh Hancock

Early Sunday morning, Cardinals relief pitcher Josh Hancock was killed in an automobile accident. The team was informed early this morning and tonight's game against the Cubs has been postponed. Hancock, 29, has been apart of the Cardinals family since Febuary 2006, helped them win the World Series last year. "The Cardinals ask that all fans join the team in offering their prayers and condolences to Josh Hancock's family on this very sad day for the Cardinals and Major League Baseball." This season, Hancock was 0-1 with a 3.55 ERA. Since 2002, Johnson is 9-7 with 4.20 ERA with the Red Sox, Phillies, Reds, and Cardinals.

Igawa Does Well, Karstens Out

Over at MLB Rumors: Japan's Fab Four, I discuss Kei Igawa's outing and how it will effect the Yankees. Also, Jeff Karstens season ended as fast as it started: He started the season on the DL, got in one below average outing, and after one pitch today, he's back on it. He is expected to be out at least a month, possibly two. Anyways, as a MLB Rumors Insider, the site indicates that the Yankees will discuss which minor leaguer to call up, and if they should move Igawa back to the rotation after his solid outing. Check it out...

Cardinals Haunted By Dispatch Article

Saturday, April 28, 2007

The St. Louis Post Dispatch had an article on the cover of their newspaper earlier this week discussing, more like poking fun at the Cubs and how they haven't been to a World Series in nearly a century. It even went to say that after spending 300 million dollars, the Cubs are still chasing the Cardinals. Later that day, the Cardinals were beat by former Cardinal Jason Marquis and the Cubs 5-3, and after the game, manager Tony LaRussa expressed his apologies to the Cubs, and said he had nothing to do with it. He also refused to answer any questions from Dispatch reporters. And today, Carlos Zambrano, Jacque Jones, and company went on to beat the Cardinals 8-1. Zambrano pitched seven innings, giving up one earned run, and struck out two. Jacque Jones was a homerun away from the cycle, going 3-4 with 4 RBI. On the Cardinals side, Adam Wainwright struggled, going 4.1 innings giving up six earned runs. The Cubs improve to 10-13 and push the Cardinals to 10-13. The Cubs go for the sweep tomorrow on ESPN at 6:55 p.m. CT, Rich Hill for the Cubs and Kip Wells for the Cardinals.

Torre to be Fired?

George Steinbrenner is breathing down Joe Torre's back as the Yankees lose yet another game, making that seven straight losses. However, this seems to be "George Being George." Steinbrenner has threatened to fire Torre the past two years after playoff eliminations, but has balked at it. However, yesterday, word from Tampa was Steinbrenner was hinting at a change. Torre is in the last year of his contract, and it is possible, that if they lose again, he could be fired before his contract ends this season. Their are two candidates in the Yankees organization that could replace Torre: Hitting Coach Don Mattingly or Announcer Joe Torre. In past years, the blame has always come down on the managers. For example, Dusty Baker got fired after only winning 66 games. While the pitching coach, hitting coach, were left nameless in all articles discussing the faults. During this seven game skid, the Yankees have been outscored 33-54. Shouldn't the blame fall on the Don Mattingly for that? This season, the Yankees team ERA is 5.12, 27th overall. Should the blame fall on Ron Guidry for that? All I know is the Yankees need someone to blame now and right now, it is Joe Torre. But the chances of the Yankees dropping one of the best managers is sports history is highly unlikely. But if they do fire Torre, it could trigger a ripple effect and the Reds might fire Jerry Narron to try and sign Torre? Or the Mariners firing Mike Hargrove to take their chance at him as well?

Chris Denorfia to the A's

The Cincinnati Reds have traded injured Chris Denorfia to the Oakland A's for two players to be named later and cash. The deal has been in the works for months now, but when Denorfia got hurt, it slowed the process. Although he won't be able to play until Spring Training, the A's were still interested in bringing the prospect to Oakland. He will probably have an outfield spot next year with Kielty and Bradley becoming free agents.

Modi'in Miracle Draft Sandy Koufax

Sandy Koufax was taken in the draft for the inaugural season of the Israel Baseball League. "His selection is a tribute to the esteem with which he is held by everyone associated with this league," said former big leaguer Aret Shamsky, who will manage the Miracle. "It's been 41 years between starts for him. If he's rested and ready to take the mound again, we want him on our team." The 45-game season begins in late June. The draft included nine nations and expect at least 100 Israeli citizens to be participating this season. The first pick was Aaron Levin, who played for Cuesta Community College and he was also selected by Modi'in.

Drew's Walkoff Spoils Terrific Outing

Thursday, April 26, 2007

After pitching seven shutout innings, Padres ace Jake Peavy handed the game over to arguably the best eighth and nine inning pitchers, Scott Linebrink and Trevor Hoffman. With help earlier in the game from Termel Sledge, and a RBI double from Kevin Kouzmanoff, the game was all but won, especially against the slumping the Diamondbacks. However, Miguel Montero battled back on Linebrink and hit a homerun, and in the bottom of the ninth, former top prospect Stephen Drew belts a walkoff homerun off the all time saves leader, Trevor Hoffman. The Diamondbacks ended a five game slide, improving to 11-11. The Diamondbacks and Livan Hernandez take on Chris Young and the Padres in the series finale Fox Sports Net at 6:40 MST.

Prior Out For Season

Wednesday, April 25, 2007

It does not surprise many, but Mark Prior had successful arthroscopic surgery and is done for the season. The team expects him to be ready to pitch next spring. For those of us who know Prior however, it is unlikely we will see him until May or June of 2008. "It's not career-ending," Hendry said Wednesday. "[Andrews] felt optimistic that he would be able to pitch next year. A couple hours after surgery, [Andrews] wasn't going to give you a time frame. He didn't think there was anything significant to stop Mark from pursuing his career, and at his age, should not have a problem responding and coming back after probably a strenuous rehab." Prior, 26, has been on the disabled list every year since 2002, and it goes on this year and most likely next year as well.

A-Rod Tells Everyone Again: He's Staying

Although I love seeing Alex Rodriguez having a great year, it has become very annoying hearing every couple of weeks: I'm Staying. "I want to stay in New York, no matter what," said Rodriguez, who can become a free agent following this season and leave $81 million on the table. However, back on March 14th, we heard the same thing from Rodriguez, just in a different place and under different context: "I would love to finish my career here." And back in October, Brian Cashman told reporters that "He wants to stay here..." So, have we had enough yet? Alex Rodriguez is staying in New York, and nothing has changed on the situation, at all. The Yankees organization wants him and it is obvious A-Rod feels the same way. Despite this controversy that frustrates many, Rodriguez is off to a great year, and has belted fourteen homeruns this season. Bonds hopes he can hit one hundred, however playing in New York, you're bound to slump at least once.

Angels Talk Extension with Rodriguez

The Angels and closer Francisco Rodriguez's agent, Paul Kinzer, have started contract discussions, but are saying nothing is serious. "Right now we're just exploring talks and structure, but we're not close on anything," Kinzer said. "We'll see what happens. In the next couple of weeks we'll start getting more serious." The good thing about the deal however is both sides really want to get a deal done. "Hopefully, one of these days I'll get the same opportunity he has to get locked up," Rodriguez said. "This is the place I want to be. ... I would love to stay here for hopefully the rest of my career." There is no deadline on the deal, both sides just hope to get something done soon rather than later. Rodriguez, 25, has collected six saves this season, and has struck out twelve. Career wise, he has saved 113 out of a possible 132, and has a career ERA of 2.33. The Angels are probably looking at a five to six year deal for their closer, but it could be closer to ten.

Johnson Back, But Struggles

Tuesday, April 24, 2007

Randy Johnson returned to the mound for the Diamondbacks this season for the first time sine 2004 and got worked. Randy Johnson, six months off of back surgery, pitched five innings, giving up six earned runs, walked four, and struck out seven, as the Diamondbacks are losing to the Padres 10-5. This could be a start for Johnson just getting on track. From what I noticed from the tape, Johnson was throwing strikes that looked like strikes, and balls that look like balls. That will change as he gets more comfortable on the mound, but that usually happens for a new pitcher in his debut back from a injury, especially after a couple rehab assignments.

Yankees Crumble

The Yankees lost yet again falling to 8-11. But that is not all, not only did Wang struggle in his debut, giving up four earned runs in six innings, but Derek Jeter got hurt and left the game, and Alex Rodriguez was hit less, ending his 23 game hit streak. The Yankees have Any Pettitte going tomorrow against the Blue Jays, hoping to avoid back to back to back series sweeps. Hopefully they can turn it around at home, hosting five games before going to Texas, two with the Blue Jays, and two with the Red Sox. The Yankees have a day off next Monday, but then go two weeks until their next one. The Yankees hope come Thursday that rookie phenom Phil Hughes can come through in his major league debut and live up to his potential as the veteran pitchers of the Yankees heal up and can come back.

Cubs Hurt By Big Hitter, Again

Monday, April 23, 2007

In back to back games, the Cubs have gone to extra innings, and have been hurt by the teams top hitter. In yesterday's finale against the Cardinals, Ryan Dempster came in started off okay, but threw a belt high fastball to Albert Pujols that was taken nearly out of the park. That lost the game and the series for the Cubs. Tonight, the Cubs take the game into extras and fail to end it early, forcing the Cubs to go to new callup and rookie pitcher Rocky Cherry. Cherry is able to start off strong, but then throws a slider of the over the plate to Prince Fielder that just gets out, with the wind blowing in. The Cubs are hoping to add a twelfth pitcher to their staff, and whether they send down Ronny Cedeno, or Felix Pie, has yet to be determined. They will most likely callup Angel Guzman to be the fifth starter while Miller is on the DL. The Cubs drop to 7-12, well into last place, but the good news coming out of the game is Alfonso Soriano is starting to heat up, and so is Felix Pie. The Cubs have been struggling as of late and you can expect a change within the next couple of days. Whether it is Felix Pie or Ronny Cedeno being sent down, something will happen. The pitchers are tired, and they are now relying on Rich Hill to go deep into the game tomorrow to avoid Piniella reaching into the pen. The Cubs have a day off this week, so hopefully they can get some much need rest.

A-Rod Not Slowing Down

A-Rod has yet to level out his power swing belting not one, but two homeruns against the Devil Rays. Yes, making that 14 homeruns on the year. He has tied the Major League record for homeruns in April and there is still seven days to go. Despite hitting two home runs and driving in three, the Yankees were not able to overcome the Devil Rays. Kei Igawa struggled yet again for the Yankees, giving up seven earned runs. Devil Rays third basemen Aki Iwamura was 2-3 with an RBI. B.J. Upton had a great game leading the Devil Rays to the victory batting successfully in 2 of 4 at bats, and driving in four runs. He and Rocco Baldelli both had homeruns. The Yankees drop to 8-10 and have lost four straight.

Prior To Undergo Exploratory Surgery

The Cubs announced today that Mark Prior will undergo surgery Tuesday in hopes that it will find what is really wrong with Mark Prior's shoulder. "Hopefully, [Dr. James Andrews] can go in there and find something that isn't major and hopefully help Mark's career get back on track," Hendry said. Prior's last outing was cut short by discomfort in his shoulder, and he is now on the disabled list in Iowa. Andrews has the clearance to fix anything that may need repair, but that is not what the surgery is for. It is still unclear whether or not Prior will pitch this season...same with Kerry Wood.

The Cubs placed veteran Wade Miller on the Disabled List today after three failed starts; however, they are calling it minor back spasms. They have called up Rocky Cherry. There is still no word whether or not Felix Pie will stay with the Cubs or if he will go back to Triple-A. The fifth starter has yet to be announced.

Fantasy Update: Eric Gagne

Sunday, April 22, 2007

Eric Gagne left Sunday's game in the ninth inning with an injury to his right knee. Gagne, who was attempting to close out the game against the Oakland A's. He landed awkwardly after throwing a pitch to Mark Ellis. He eventually limped off the field after being reviewed by Ron Washington and the Rangers trainer. With Gagne out, expect Otsuka to take over as the full time closer again and for the Rangers to give Gagne as much time as he needs to get healthy. Gagne, who has collected 10 saves in the past three years, has pitched in 3.1 innings and has given up no runs, but has walked two, and struck out one. Gagne, 32, will be a free agent after this season and if he is faced with more injuries, will probably be looking for another one year, incentive based deal.

White Sox Should Trade Buerhle

After White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle threw a no hitter, his price went way up. He is a Missouri native and the Cardinals have already made it known that they are interested in bringing him home. Not only did he grow up a Cardinals fan, but he turned down a three year deal, worth 33 million dollars for the White Sox last year, hinting to the Front Office that he will go after his contract is up. Buehrle, 28, will be a free agent after this season and is expected to get at least "Gil Meche money." He was the face of many trade rumors leaking out of the White Sox front office, but nothing was ever executed. He was discussed in trades all of last season with teams like the Mets, Yankees, Red Sox, Cardinals, and Rangers and there is already a little fued between Kenny Williams and Mark Buehrle, which first started at the Sox Fest in January. And if Mark Buehrle can put together another 16-17 win season, what would stop him from bolting to the market to cash in and leave Chicago where he has been mistreated? The White Sox are in need of an outfielder, and could shop Buehrle around the trade deadline for a big name outfielder. Ichiro could be available?

Did Yankees Get Damaged Goods?

Saturday, April 21, 2007

Back in November, when the Yankees traded Gary Sheffield to the Tigers for top prospect Humberto Sanchez, and minor leaguers Kevin Whelan, and Anthony Claggert, they thought they were getting something great from the Tigers in Sanchez. However, Humberto Sanchez just had elbow ligament-replacement surgery and will miss the rest of the season. Yes, Sanchez still has a lot of potential, but what if he comes back and is not the same, or can't reach the same velocity as he had 2006. Will the Yankees file a claim against the Tigers? I doubt that will be the case but with the Yankees stocked up on veteran pitchers in their last year of their contracts (Mussina, Pettitte, Wang*, and Rivera), they will need to either spend a boatload of money to refuel thier rotation, or look to these young players. They do have Igawa, Henn, Chase, and will have rights to Wang because of ML service, but would not look to those rookies to full in those big shoes just after one season, would they? So far this season, Kevin Whelan is 1-0 with 2 SV, and 10 K over eight innings of work in Double-A Trenton. And Anthony Claggert, who has pitched in 7.1 innings, is 0-0 with 1 SV and 5 K in Single A Tampa.

Respect Earned?

Friday, April 20, 2007

In the first fourteen games of the season, Alex Rodriguez has homered ten times, leading the league by three homeruns. A-Rod, who has a seventeen game hitting streak, also leads the MLB in RBIs with 26. His second walk off homerun this season, and all he can say is: "I'm just trying to keep it simple...I've been telling you [reporters] for seven or eight weeks, since down in Tampa, I'm feeling pretty good." Joe Torre has been very impressed, and isn't doubting Rodriguez to potentially put together one of the best seasons in baseball history. "It's what Alex is capable of," Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "You talk about the sky is the limit -- he's just got incredible ability. He's basically letting it speak for itself." When talking with one Yankee fan, and I asked if respect whas been earned [for A-Rod], all he could say is "for now."

Thursday, April 19, 2007

For the third start in a row, Rich Hill has caught the slumping Cubs and threw another gem. Hill blanked the Braves today giving up four hits, struck out seven, and walked three in eight solid innings. Hill is now 3-0 with a 0.41 ERA and 18 K. Michael Barrett and Aramis Ramirez helped Rich Hill pick up his third win, hitting solo home runs. The Cubs split the series with Atlanta and travel home for a three game series with the Cardinals.

Hernandez To Miss 3 Starts

The Mariners announced today that Felix Hernandez will miss up to three starts with a muscle strain inside is throwing elbow and forearm. According to his doctor, he will not throw for five days, and then can start playing catch. "I think 10 to 20 days is a reasonable estimate," [Edward] Khalfayan said when asked when Hernandez might again pitch in a game. "That's as good a news as you can get from an elbow injury." Hernandez has dominated opponents as of late, one hitting the Red Sox, and striking out a total 18 batters in three games. He is 2-1 with a 1.56 ERA. Hernadez, 21, although injured, remains in good spirits and plans to travel with the team on the road.

BREAKING NEWS: Buehrle Throws No-Htter

Wednesday, April 18, 2007

Mark Buehrle of the Chicago White Sox threw a no hitter tonight against the Rangers. He collected eight strikeouts, two in the ninth inning, and walked one. The White Sox made it easy for Buehrle collecting seven runs. Jim Thome hit two home runs while Jermaine Dye hit one. With the win tonight, the White Sox move to 6-7. This was the first White Sox no hitter since August 11, 1991 when Wilson Alvarez threw one. There have been 16 no hitters in White Sox history.

Mariners Lock Up Lopez

The Mariners agreed to a four year extension, worth 13.75 million dollars with second basemen Jose Lopez. Lopez was selected to the All Star game last year, hitting .282 with 10 HR and 79 RBI. This comes weeks after signing shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt to the same contract, meaning they will control the middle infield for the next several years to come. "We project Jose to develop into a really special middle infielder," Bavasi said. "He appeared in the All-Star game in his first full season, and is still improving both offensively and defensively.

Interview with Matt Hirsh

Matt Hirsh is a pitcher on the York Revolution in the Atlantic League and is the younger brother of Rockies pitcher Jason Hirsh. He and his brother run Brothers in Arms, a site run by them where they talk about each other as their season goes on. It is updated often, and you can contact them too. I want to thank Matt for donating his time to answer my questions via email.

ELI: What was it like growing up playing baseball? Were you and your brother dominant players?

MATT: Growing up and playing baseball was very fun and exciting for me. I had so much fun playing travel ball because I got to travel all across the nation to New York, Florida, Minnesota, Michigan, Nevada, Arizona, Iowa, and a few other states to play in different tournaments. I don't know if dominant is the right word but we were both very good at a young age and were able to keep up with kids who were older than us.

ELI: Who do you thank for you success in baseball?

MATT: I thank my brother and my father for my success in baseball. Without them I wouldn't be where I am today.

ELI: Besides baseball, do you play any other sports?

MATT: No, I do not play any other sports besides baseball.

ELI: What do you like to do during your free time?

MATT: In my free time I like to hang out with my friends, surf the Internet, play video games, and keep my website www.hirshbrothers.com updated.

ELI: Which professional player has taught you the most since becoming a
professional yourself?

MATT: I would have to say Roger Clemens. He gave me some good words of wisdom when I had a chance to talk to him while I was playing in Greeneville.

ELI: If you weren't a pitcher, what position would you want to play?

MATT: Right field. I was an outfielder in high school and had to make a choice to pitch or play outfield in college, but if I had the opportunity I would love to play outfield because I love to hit.

ELI:
Being born in California, if given the opportunity, would you like to go
and pitch in your home state?

MATT: Who wouldn't? I would love to pitch for my hometown. My brother just
recently did that as he pitched against the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.

ELI :What was it like being drafted by the Astros? Was it something you expected to happen?

MATT: Being drafted by the Astros was very exciting for me. I knew that maybe
someday I would have the opportunity to pitch along side my brother but unfortunately he was traded and I was released. I had a feeling that the Astros were going to draft me when I talked to the scout that signed me. It was down to a few teams but I had a feeling that they were going to take me.

Myers to 'Pen, Leiber Back In

After a terrible start for the Phillies (3-9), which included a near Pay Per View fight starring Charlie Manuel, a shakeup was in order. The Phillies decided to move struggling pitcher Brett Myers to the bullpen and move veteran pitcher Jon Leiber back into the rotation. Myers has struggled so far this season, going 0-2 with a 9.39 ERA. But Leiber hasn't done any better, with a 11.57 ERA. The Phillies are currently 5.5 games out of first place, trailing the Marlins(6-7) 1.5 games. The Phillies play the Nationals tonight with Adam Eaton taking the hill against Jason Bergmann.

Cox Extended

The Braves and Bobby Cox have agreed to a one year extension through the 2008 season. "No one is more deserving of this than Bobby Cox, and we are very pleased to extend his contract through 2008," Braves executive vice president and general manager John Schuerholz said. "We feel that Bobby is the best manager in the game, and his place in baseball history is well-secured. His leadership has helped the Braves to set a very high standard of excellence." Cox, 65, is expected to call it a career after 2008 because he only signed a one year extension, but we'll see what the Braves do record wise til then. Cox is known to develop players very well, and I'm sure the Braves will do whatever possible to keep him if they need him for another year.

Dodgers Lose Schmidt

Tuesday, April 17, 2007

Bad sign? Jason Schmidt came into Spring Training and was not bringing the same heat that everyone thought he would. It carried over into the season and he's gone 1-2 with a 7.36 ERA. This lead to an MRI which came up negative, but the Dodgers plan to give him a couple days off. "We are going to give it a few days to let it [shoulder inflammation] calm down. Hopefully it's just a short term thing," Dodgers manager Grady Little said. Schmidt, who's now on the DL, was 11-9 last year with the Giants, with a 3.59 ERA.

Cubs Lose Soriano

Monday, April 16, 2007

Cubs center fielder Alfonso Soriano slid awkwardly trying to make a play in the outfield tonight and apparently has a strained hamstring. Tests will be run tomorrow, but as of today, he is day to day. Before leaving however, Soriano collected a hit, and scored a run. The Cubs ultimately won the game 12-4. Aramis Ramirez is cleared to play tomorrow and you can probably guess that he will be used as a pinch hitter, with Theriot at third, DeRosa at second, and Jones in center. With Murton and Jones taking the corners. They play Greg Maddux and the Padres in the finale at 1:20 p.m. before heading to Atlanta.

Reds Sign Freel

The Reds sign utility player Ryan Freel to a two year deal, worth seven million dollars. Under the terms of the deal, he will make 3 million in 2008, and 4 million in 2009. Freel, 31, has been with the Reds since 2003, and has lead the team in stolen bases the past three years. Career wise, he is .274 career hitter, with 19 HR, and 91 RBI. In his career, he has played 2B, 3B, and OF. He is currently the Reds starting outfielder. This is a good signing because he gets on base, and is a decent enough fielder to hold that spot for the years to come. Furthermore, he hasn't been effected by injuries so he should not be of concern for the Reds.

Mariners Pound McCarthy, Rangers

Sunday, April 15, 2007

Ichiro, Beltre, and Vidro combined for four homeruns and were 9-14 with 10 RBI's, and 9 runs scored to win by a score of 14-6.It was McCarthy's shortest outing of his young career, giving up six runs over two innings. "It wasn't one of the more positive outings I'll have this year," McCarthy said. Horacio Ramirez was strong for the Mariners in six innings, giving up just one earned run and picking up his first win. "Well, at least the weather was better," said Ramirez after going six innings and allowing seven hits and five runs (just one earned). "I think I did a good job of staying sharp." Mariners will take on Ramon Ortiz, who is 2-0 on the year, of the Twins, while the Rangers look to bounce back against the White Sox.

Lohse Takes Series From Cubs in Style

Although Ted Lilly was sharp again in his third start of the season, the Cubs bats were shut down by Kyle Lohse, who gave up four hits, but struck out 12. ''That's a big confidence boost when you can face that part of the lineup with men on first and third and no outs and get the two strike outs,'' Lohse said. ''That's what we need right there to come through in that situation.'' Lohse fooled Jacque Jones with a nasty changeup, hit the outside corner all day to strike out Derrek Lee and Mark DeRosa, and was able to pitch out of jam with runners on the corners with no outs. Despite being handed his first loss of the season, Ted Lilly seemed content with his pitching performance, just hoping the hitting will come soon. ''I've had three starts and we're not winning a lot of games,'' said Lilly, who signed with the Cubs for four years and $40 million in the offseason. ''It's nice to go out there and throw the ball well, but the objective is to win games.'' The Cubs fall into last place while the Reds move into first place. The Reds will take on Prince Fielder and the Brewers at home while the Cubs welcome in Greg Maddux and the Padres for a two game series.

Blue Jays Ryan Out

The Blue Jays place B.J. Ryan on the 15 Day Disabled list today with an elbow injury. Ryan already has two blown saves, and had five last year in 42 chances. The Blue Jays called up Jamie Vermilyea and he will work out of the bullpen while Jason Frasor will take over as closer. Ryan signed a five year deal, worth 47 million dollars back in 2005 and has been outstanding since joining the Blue Jays. But pitching in 134 games the past two years might have put some stress on his elbow.

FANTASY SUGGESTION: IF HE IS A FREE AGENT AND YOUR CLOSER ROLE IS WEAK, HE WOULD BE A GOOD PICKUP FOR YOUR TEAM BECAUSE HE WOULD GET SOME SAVES. AND THE BLUE JAYS ARE PLAYING GREAT BASEBALL SO HIS SAVE TOTAL WILL LIKELY GO UP. BUT WAIT FOR HIM TO COME OFF THE DL AND PROVE THAT HE CAN PUT A SERIES OF SAVES TOGETHER.

Ripken Wants to Coach

Saturday, April 14, 2007

New Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. says he would like to coach after his kids are grown. Ripken, 46, a two-time most valuable player who played in a Major League Baseball-record 2,632 straight games, says he would like to be a manager but wouldn't mind being a coach, anything he thinks can make the game better. "I love the thought of being a manager; the strategic nature of it," Ripken said. "Or a coach. Maybe some of the things Dad taught me, I could pass along to some younger kids and make the game better. Those two jobs would interest me." However, Ripken may look to be a co-owner of the Orioles if Angelos decides to sell them. "If he ever decides he wants to sell, I'd explore the possibility of being in the ownership group," Ripken said.

Wearing 42 Shows Respect

While the 60th anniversary approaches for Jackie Robinson's major league debut, comments are being made about the growing number of players wearing number 42 is disrespectful. However, I and other players think it is a good thing and it is honoring his historic achievement and courage. Torii Hunter has become frustrated thinking players are just wearing it because they think it is cool. Although I disagree with him and think that the more players that wear it, show the impact he made on the game, and how America embraced the idea of blacks and whites playing on the same field. But obviously Hunter feels different. "This is supposed to be an honor," Hunter told USA Today, "and just a handful of guys wearing the number. Now you've got entire teams doing it. I think we're killing the meaning. "It should be special wearing Jackie's number, not just because it looks cool," Hunter told the newspaper. However, Hunter brought up Larry Doby and why he is not honored for breaking the color barrier in the American league. I think Doby should be honored as well but he did not make the same impact as Jackie Robinson did on the game, and certainly didn't put up the same numbers. But what he went deserves mentioning. Here is the complete list of players planning to wear Jackie Robinson's number on Sunday:

Angels
: Gary Matthews Jr.
Astros: All players
Athletics: Milton Bradley
Blue Jays: Vernon Wells, Frank Thomas, Royce Clayton and hitting coach Mickey Brantley
Braves: Andruw Jones

Indians Lock Up Westbrook

The Indians sign Jake Westbrook to a three year extension, worth 33 million dollars. Westbrook, who was the subject of trades with the Cubs this off season, was hoping to get a deal done during Spring Training, but is perfectly happy with his new deal. The deal holds no options, so the Indians will have Westbrook, one of the most consistent pitchers in the AL, til the 2010 off season. He says that contract talks really weighed him down so far this season, as it shows, he is 0-1 in one in two starts with a 7.36 ERA. "It comes down to how comfortable I am here," he said. "Not only for myself, but my family. We have an 18-month-old son [Parker] growing up. We felt very comfortable here, and [the Indians] made a huge effort to get the number I wanted." The past three years, Westbrook has had fourteen or more wins and an ERA under 4.50.

The Cubs released a statement today on Mark Prior: "Mark Prior this morning made his extended spring training debut in Mesa, AZ. After completing his first two innings of work, Mark experienced discomfort in his right shoulder and exited the game." So this means either his shoulder hasn't fully healed or it is minor discomfort and he needs some time off. However, knowing Prior, there is something wrong with his shoulder and he'll be lucky to pitch successfully in the majors again. I may be jumping to conclusions with Prior, but if he through a minor league game to a bunch of rookies, and is feeling discomfort, he is no where near ready to making a return to the majors. I predict, if he returns at all, it will be July, probably August.

About MLB Rumors

Wednesday, April 11, 2007

MLB Rumors is "a fun compilation of interesting tidbits, rumors and goings on around baseball." [SI.com writer Jon Heyman]. MLB Rumors, which was started November 9th, 2006, is a baseball rumors website updated twenty-four hours a day. It's goal from the beginning is to offer its readers new, relevant, and legitimate rumors each and everyday. Each article delivers the news and then Eli provides his own analysis on it. Because of this, angry and supportive fans defend their team and make the site a much more interactive place. With Special Features that cover the MLB Draft, the free agent period, and include interviews with over forty executives and players, it is obvious why this site won the 2007 Best Sports Blog in just its first year in service.

Eli tries to get as many interviews as possible for his readers, and has successfully landed All-Stars Curtis Granderson, Jamie Moyer, Cliff Floyd, and Harold Reynolds. He has also interviewed the 2007 First Overall Pick in the Draft David Price, who he still keeps in touch with today. Along with players, he has interviewed Padres GM Kevin Towers, Indians GM Mark Shapiro, Diamondbacks GM Josh Byrnes, and A's GM Billy Beane. All interviews are kept under twenty minutes and in no way are controversial.

As of April 20th, 2008, the site has had 2 million visitors and has landed such advertisers as Nike, PetSmart, Cingular, Circuit City, Vitamin Water, and more! Of those vistors, 90 % come from the United States, 6 % come from Canada, and 1% come from Japan, Israel, Korea, and the Dominican Republic respectively.

MLB Rumors has been acclaimed by several Front Office executives and reporters including: Billy Beane, sports agent Joe Bick, Harold Reynolds, ESPN's Peter Gammons, Buster Olney, Jayson Stark, Chicago Sun-Times' Rick Telander, and many more!

As of December, 28th 2007, MLB Rumors is a member of the Accredited Sports Blogs of America.

Yankees May Be in More Trouble

Mike Mussina left the game in the third inning today for what is being called a strained hamstring. Mussina, 38, was shaky in his first start and having this problem can't be any help. With Igawa starting Friday, he must prove that he can pitch before the Yankees might come calling on phenom Phil Hughes. Wang and Karstens are out, leaving Rasner in the rotation, but he was anything but sharp in his last performance which makes many wonder, when will they toss the money at Clemens? At least their offense is hanging in there, except Matsui is on the DL. Hopefully they can get through April, get Wang back to form and get back on track. Many people are saying it's still early and you have nothing to worry about; however, when you are a game out in August or September you'll look back at these games and say "man, we should have won that one."

Devil Rays May Have Something with Iwamura

Dale Nakashjima has commented just moments ago about how well Akinori Iwamura is playing so far this season over at MLB Rumors: Japan's Fab Four. He's batting .444 with 1 HR and 4 RBI with 3 SB. His stats are helping the weak Devil Rays and could help your fantasy team as well. "He is driving in runs, getting hits, scoring runs, and even stealing bases. Don't be fooled by hit height, the 5-9 monster would help break tie breakers in fantasy head to head match ups." If you have a weak bench or your power hitters are struggling, he would be a great choice for a tempory bench player.

Phillies Claim 2B Michael Garciaparra

The Mariners had to part ways with former first round draft pick converted second basemen Michael Garciaparra when he was claimed off waivers by the Philadelphia Phillies. Garciaparra had his best overall season in 2006, batting .311 in 70 games in Triple-A and Double-A. Many Mariners in the Front Office suspected that he might be gone either before or during the season because he was put on the 40-man to avoid the Rule 5, but if he were to be sent down to make room for a non roster invitee, he would have to clear waivers for three days. Furthermore, the Mariners decided that Betancourt would be the future shortstop for the Mariners, while Jose Lopez put a good year together at second and they had a lot of depth there already. "I'm excited for him because he gets to stay on a 40-man roster," said Greg Hunter, the Mariners' Minor League director. "We're disappointed to lose him, but we needed roster spots..."

MLB Rumors Brother Site

MLB Rumors Correspondent Dale Nakashjima has created a site that's goal is to follow the four new Japanese player through 2007 and beyond. It is called MLB Rumors: Japan's Fab Four which plans to follow Daisuke Matsuzaka, Kei Igawa, Akinori Iwamura, and Hideki Okajima. I hope you will check it from time to time. It will also talk about the Red Sox, Devil Rays and Yankees, the teams they play for. It was started today, and so far, it looks pretty good. Check it out...

Carpenter Out For Season?

It has been reported that Chris Carpenter might have bone spurs, which will require surgery. While the team doctor remains optimistic and the swelling has decreased a little bit, but it is still swollen. Carpenter has this problem back in 1999, and had surgery to get them removed. If Carpenter (0-1) does require surgery, the Cardinals will probably look to their minors for help, calling up pitching prospect Blake Hawksworth. Cardinals pitching is already weak, and this shouldn't help their chances of taking the division again.

Santana Shuts Down Talks, For Good

Johan Santana told the Twins today he does not want to talk about a contract anymore, and will wait to hit the open market before he discusses anything. A source close to negotiations says the Twins tried to add on an extra two years to his 4 year, 40 million dollar deal, giving him about 18 million a year. However, if Carlos Zambrano and Barry Zito are going to be receiving 18 million a year, we all know that Johan Santana, two time Cy Young winner in back to back years, deserves atleast 20 million. The Twins will probably wait til next season to consider a trade for him, that is if Santana stands strong with his threat. Then the Twins will check their options, see if Liriano can come back strong and ancor the rotation, before they consider anything with Santana. So far this season, Santana is 2-0 with a 2.77 ERA and 15 K.

UPDATE: SANTANA DENIES REPORT THAT HE HAS CUT OFF NEGOTIATIONS. I REPEAT, JOHAN SANTANA DENIES JON HEYMAN'S REPORT (ABOVE) THAT HE CUT OFF NEGOTIATIONS.

Interview with Angels Expert Stephen Smith

Stephen Smith, founder, writer, and producer of www.futureangels.com discusses up to the minute news about the Angels farm and was nice enough to answer some of my questions for MLB Rumors. It is a great site even if you’re not an Angels fan to read up on the future stars that could soon be on your team or pitching against them.

ELI: Who is the top prospect in the Angels farm?

STEPHEN: Top position prospect is Brandon Wood. Top pitching prospect is Nick Adenhart.

ELI: Who from the LoA/HighA Leagues is looking like they could turn into something?

STEPHEN: I think Rancho Cucamonga shortstop Hainley Statia is underrated. I ranked him #6 last November on my FutureAngels.com Top 10 Prospects list. Consider him the rough equivalent of Orlando Cabrera. With Cedar Rapids, I'll go out on a limb and name Warner Madrigal. He was once a power hitter prospect in the lower minors, but after multiple hand injuries and a general lapse of plate discipline, the Angels converted him last year into a relief pitcher. He's always had a power arm. From what I saw in spring training, he throws in the mid-90s and has a decent slider. The Angels teach all their young pitchers the changeup, so he'll mix in that pitch eventually. It may take him a while due to inexperience, but give him 4-5 years and maybe he'll be in a big-league uniform.

ELI: Who is the best prospect to come out of the Angels system?

STEPHEN: Ever?! Probably Tim Salmon. In this decade, you have plenty of candidates -- John Lackey, Francisco Rodriguez, Scot Shields to name a few. I think Casey Kotchman and Howie Kendrick will be special too. Jered Weaver as well.

ELI: When did you start doing this? Why?

STEPHEN: A long story. The short version ... In 1998 I started helping out the Angels' Cal League affiliate which at the time was in Lake Elsinore. I went out to visit Cedar Rapids and got peppered with questions about the players that had moved up the ladder from there to Lake Elsinore. I realized there was an interest not just by Angels fandom but also fans in the affiliates' towns, as well as the players' parents scattered around the world. The Internet was just starting to emerge as a popular technology amongst the masses, and to me seemed like a good solution. That was back in the days when modems were still slow dial-ups and web sites were mostly text. We've come a long way since then, and FutureAngels.com has always been ahead of the curve with photos, audio interviews, and video highlight clips. Now I'm doing a semi-monthly podcast. All these are tools for helping to bring Angels minor league baseball to those with an interest. I fell in love with minor league baseball ten years ago, and now I'm totally bored by going to a major league game. When you're one of 2,000 people in the stands, it's a much more intimate experience than when you're one of 40,000 people in the stands. And in the minors, if you're willing to volunteer your time and resources, the team will embrace you and make you part of the family. There's no bigger thrill than knowing you played a small part in helping along a young man to a major league career. I have plenty of friends in the big leagues now, and friends who are players' parents. Every once in a while, I'll hear from a player or parent who left the organization long ago. That's special to know they remember you.

ELI: Did you play baseball growing up?

Not really. My family couldn't afford to pay for Little League and the gear and what not. But I was an avid Angels fan, and saw a game in Anaheim Stadium when it opened in 1966. We had seats behind home plate for a Sunday day game. There were maybe 5,000 people in the stands. It's changed a bit since then. :-)

ELI: What kind of stress is put on a top prospect who is stuck in AAA?

STEPHEN: Personally, I think any stress is self-inflicted. It's different for every player. A guy who's 32 in Triple-A is different from a guy who's 22 in Triple-A. There are guys who float around for years in Triple-A, going from team to team. Once a player has six seasons of professional experience, he can take his minor league free agency if his club doesn't put him on the 40-man roster. So there are guys who each year float from organization to organization, looking for a place to play and a shot at touching the big leagues. For a top prospect like Brandon Wood, or even for a kid like Jeff Mathis who's only 24 yet is in his third Triple-A season, they have plenty of time. Looking at Mathis, I remind people that Jason Varitek wasn't a regular major league catcher until he was 26. Varitek was drafted at 23 after graduating late from college. Stress is different for everyone. Some thrive from it, others collapse, and there are others who just cruise along having a good time.

ELI: Is players morale different in AA and AAA because they are so close to the bigs then in LoA and HighA? How?

STEPHEN: For the most part, I don't think "morale" is an issue. Sure, they'd all like to be in the big leagues, but nobody gets depressed or throws a temper tantrum. The Angels teach a team philosophy and stress that it's all about what's best for the parent club. For example, Curtis Pride, who's 38, is in Double-A this year so he can continue to play every day while three prospects play every day in the Triple-A outfield. I don't think morale is an issue for him; in fact, he's an example of what a team player is all about. Other organizations may have head cases, but the Angels seem to largely avoid those personalities.

ELI: Where do the Angels have a lot of depth? Where do they not have a lot?

STEPHEN: In general, their depth is in pitching, middle-infielders, and catchers. I find that a lot of fans misunderstand why middle-infield depth is so important. Middle infielders are generally the most athletic position players on the roster, and therefore have the flexibility to move to other positions. Guys who play the corner outfield positions and the infield corners generally don't have such flexibility. The Angels have tinkered with moving Erick Aybar to center field. They recently moved Brandon Wood to third base. Howie Kendrick got moved to first base when he was called up last year to get his bat in the lineup. There's been some thought over the years to moving Sean Rodriguez behind the plate (which I don't think will happen). The Angels could probably use more power hitters, but their style of play really is more about advancing and scoring runners, what I call "Contactball." They're not going to sit around waiting for a long ball, although they certainly have power hitter prospects in Casey Kotchman, Brandon Wood, Kendry Morales and a couple other guys at the upper levels. They're so deep in pitching that they don't need to score 6-7 runs a game to win. If they get to the 7th with a three-run lead, they're probably going to win. Who cares if it's 4-1 or 10-7? A win is a win.

Rockies Still Shopping Kim

Tuesday, April 10, 2007

The Rockies are still looking to trade Byung-Hyun Kim, but have found no takers. They are in talks with the Brewers over Jose Capellan, but nothing serious as of late. Kim will get paid 2.5 million dollars this season, a decision Dan O'Dowd is still regretting. According to sources, O'Dowd has called around but teams that are interested arn't offering anything that will help the Rockies. Kim, who has always struggled as a started, was very displeased about being sent to the bullpen. Kim would probably be happy for a trade it is just whether Dowd is willing to accept hardly anything for him. Unless he were to package a player with Kim for Capellan or another reliever elsewhere. But the way things are shaping up now, Kim will be lucky to be in a Rockies uniform in June.

Matsuzaka's Fenway Debut

The Red Sox/Mariners game tomorrow is shaping up to be the best game of the year (so far). Not only will Daisuke Matsuzaka be making his Fenway Park debut, but it will be against Ichiro and the Mariners, with Felix Hernandez on the hill. Matsuzaka is already looking forward to pitching to him, and you bet Ichiro is looking forward to the same. "Ever since he left Japan to go to the Majors," Matsuzaka said, "he is someone I've wanted to face again. However, Suzuki has only hit a weak .235 (8-for-34) against Dice-K in their two mutual seasons in Japan. Matsuzaka, who dominated the Royals in his debut is expected to dominate most of his opponents for the first time because they do not know his tendencies. Here is one take on it from Red Sox correspondent for MLB Rumors Dale Nakashjima: "Matsuzaka has suprised me and many others with his command and poise on the mound. He will face a lot of new teams for the first time and he'll just be told to go out and pitch. The Red Sox defense, with minor wholes, is still pretty darn good and with eight known pitches that he is comfortable throwing at anytime, he will be tough to beat. He could come into July with a 10-0, 10-1 record because no one could figure him out, then he could coast the rest of the season into a 17-5, 18-6 record. He will keep his ERA low, that is for sure, the park that he will pitch in [Fenway] works well with his pitches and will work for him, surprisingly." Hernandez has also dominated as of late, and will probably continue to all year. It will be determined tomorrow who came to hit when the first pitch is thrown at 7:05 ET. Personally, knowing Matsuzaka's history as a pitcher, he always wants to finish a game and if Hernandez brought his stuff, it is almost guaranteed that Matsuzaka will go as far as he can to get the win. My prediction is for Red Sox over Mariners.

Dale Nakashjima: "Although Daisuke Matsuzaka will want to impress his Red Sox fans and he might give up a run or two early, I see him finishing this one out and getting the W."

Interview With Iowa Cubs President Sam Bernabe

Iowa Cubs President and General Manager Sam Bernabe was kind enough to answer some questions of mine for MLB Rumors. The Iowa Cubs (2-3) are the Triple A affiliate for the Chicago Cubs. They are currently housing top prospects Felix Pie, Eric Patterson, J.R. Mathes, and Carlos Marmol, among others.

ELI: First, what were the steps to hiring/promoting Buddy Bailey? Who else was up for consideration?

SAM: As a minor league affiliate we don’t do any of the hiring of the field staff. The Cubs minor league department makes all of those decisions.

ELI: As far as you know, who is the leader in the clubhouse?

SAM: The team has yet to come to
Des Moines to play. We open on Friday night so I haven’t had a chance to observe or be around the clubhouse with the players around as of yet. I suspect with the number of prospects returning to the team this year from last years team there will be plenty of leadership form veteran prospects.

ELI: What are you day to day routines as GM?

SAM: I’m in charge of the entertainment machine that has 72 days of activities. I have a full time staff of 26 and part time of around 300. I’m responsible for making sure the Chicago Cubs have all they need to train their players. I’m the liaison to the ball club for the City of
Des Moines, the Chicago Cubs, the Pacific Coast League, Minor League Baseball and Major League Baseball.

ELI: Any new additions to the team this year? Where do you expect to finish this year?

SAM: There are no significant changes to the team this year at this point. A small number of signed 6 year free agents fill out a roster that has a large number of returning prospects. We finished tied for first last year. I would expect us to be just as competitive this season.

ELI: Do you communicate with Cubs GM Jim Hendry often?

SAM: Not too often. Jim comes to town usually twice a year. I will see him in
Chicago usually 3 or 4 times a year. Our phone conversations are limited.

ELI: What other jobs have you held in baseball that got you to this spot?

SAM: I started with the Iowa Cubs as an intern in Dec. 1983. I worked my way up to G.M. by the fall of 1986. I know own part of the team and I’m President of the ballclub. I’ve never worked for any other operation.

ELI: Did you play baseball as a kid? what position?

SAM: I played from the time I was 10 until my sophomore year in college. I was a pitcher.

Padres Lock Up Young

Monday, April 9, 2007

The Padres plan to announce a four year deal, worth 14.5 million dollars with an option for a fifth year with Padres pitcher Chris Young. Young went 11-5 with a 3.46 ERA in 31 starts with the Padres last year. Locking up Young is smart, he is showing that he can be an ace, and is hinting at becoming a 16 to 17 game winner. The Padres are also working on locking up Mike Cameron, after successfully signing Adrian Gonzalez. This year, Young is 0-0 with a 4.76 ERA and 4 K.

Hampton Out; Carpenter to DL

Braves pitcher Mike Hampton will have surgery on his left shoulder Tuesday, being shutdown for the second straight season. Hampton, who had elbow ligament-replacement surgery in 2005, will have a torn tendon in the elbow repaired on Tuesday. "I guess the only silver lining is my elbow will get a little more time to rest," Hampton said in spring training. With Hampton out, it is likely that Redmond and Davies will take the final two sports. The Cardinals announced today that Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter will be placed on the 15 day DL after an MRI exam revealed arthritis and a previously undiscovered impingement in his right elbow. With Carpenter on the DL, the Cardinals called up 30-year old Randy Keisler, who pitched in 11 games last season in Oakland. The Cardinals say its not serious and they will have him back soon, but if it turns out to be ligament problems, he could be out for the season. One week into the season, former closer Brad Lidge is out of the job again. Dan Wheeler will take over as the new closer and Lidge will move back to the bullpen. "I wrestled with this all of yesterday," manager Phil Garner said. "I feel that I have to make this move for the benefit of the team. In the situation that we are in right now, we can't afford to lose any more ballgames late." Lidge was 1-5 with a 5.28 ERA and 32 saves in 38 chances last year.

FANTASY SUGGESTION FOR CARPENTER: SOMETHING IS WRONG, IF YOUR TEAM IS ALREADY WEAK, TRY AND TRADE HIM BECAUSE HE WON'T BE THE SAME THIS YEAR, IF HE COMES BACK.

FANTASY SUGGESTION FOR LIDGE: NO MORE SAVES, DROP HIM.

Interview With Rangers Reliever C.J. Wilson

Rangers reliever C.J. Wilson was nice enough to answer some of my questions for MLB Rumors through email. Wilson is a young hard throwing left hander in the Rangers bullpen entering his third season with the Rangers. He also has his own blog called Scorpion Tales: C.J. Wilson's trek through the '07 season.

ELI: What is Sosa like in the clubhouse? How has he been embraced?

C.J: He's great and everybody is happy to have such a legend on the team.

ELI: Why not use the blue glove?

CJ: When the blue glove was broken in, I used it every time.

ELI: What are the biggest differences in starting and relief? Which do you prefer?

CJ: If I could pick to start in the national league, I would do that, otherwise I would prefer to close.

ELI: How's Ron Washington?

CJ: Ron is awesome, he's realistic and positive.

ELI: You say you like Texas? Do you hope to pitch there for years to come?

CJ: Dallas is a great city, I am not a free agent so they're gonna have my rights for a long time it seems.

ELI: When did you start pitching? Have you always been a pitcher?

CJ: I was primarily an outfielder until I signed with the rangers in the 2001 june draft.

ELI: What would you say to kids who hope to become professional ball players?

CJ: I would say if you can continue to get better and stay healthy, it's possible. work harder than everyone else around you, and you'll give yourself a good chance.

ELI: Did you come up through the minors with any of the young guys on the team?

CJ: I played with feldman, tex, laird, and most of the guys that have been up and down like botts, rupe, tejeda, etc. We've had a lot of fun over the last few years. I also played against blalock, laird and botts in high school and junior college or in youth leagues during the summer.

ELI: Is there anyone on the team that has been like a mentor to you? Who?

CJ: In 2005, sandy alomar jr and doug brocail were great to me, last year I learned a lot watching and talking to Aki Otsuka.

As Players Age, Part Time Seasons Begin

Sunday, April 8, 2007

Jayson Stark, writer for ESPN, suggests that now Roger Clemens has started playing part time, it will start the ripple effect on older players to start doing it. "I just hope it doesn't transcend into more guys wanting to do that," Stark quoted one National League executive as saying. "But I think the groundwork has been laid. What would keep a [John] Smoltz from wanting to do it? What's to keep a [Mike] Mussina from wanting to do it?" Don McKee says if a player like Smoltz or Mussina make 16-18 million a year, playing the last four months of the season would still bring them about 10-12 million dollars. And if Barry Bonds breaks the home run record and wants to continue playing, why not start your season in June and rest up for an extra couple of months. Could this start a new type of clause in contracts?

Angels in the Outfiield, Not Infield

The Boston Globe is reporting that if Alex Rodriguez does become a free agent, the Angels will not come calling. He suggests that the Angels are more set on pursuing Andruw Jones. Jones will probably set the market price this off season, whether it will go up, it is almost guaranteed. If Jones has another career year like he did last year and the year before, he could make close to 160 million dollars. Jones will be 30 at seasons end but still could get at least eight years. How about an eight year deal, worth 164 million dollars. Furthermore, the third base market is very weak so many teams will pursue Rodriguez more actively. And, the third basemen set to hit the market this year aren't great. If the Angels can lure Jones to Anaheim, they would probably move Matthews to left. Last year, Jones batted .262 with 41 HR and 129 RBI. Rodriguez, who faced late season criticisms, batted .290 with 35 HR and 121 RBI.

Johnny Damon has been sidelined as of late with a strained calf and both will need replacements for the next couple of games, potentially. Matsui, who hit .302 with 8 HR in 51 games last year, after suffering a broken left wrist in May. Damon, who hit .285 with 24 HR and 80 RBI, has only played in one game this year, but the Yankees don't expect for Damon to miss too much time. However, if one of their injuries becomes serious, could they bring back Bernie Williams?

Mark DeRosa Proving What He's Worth

Mark DeRosa belted another homerun against the Brewers tonight, making that two in the past two days. He currently owns a .462 AVG with 2 HR and 5 RBI over four games. After signing a 3 year contract, worth 13 million dollars back in November, many people thought it was a bad move, hoping the money would go somewhere else. However, if DeRosa can continue to produce the way he is, there is no doubt in anyones mind that he would be quite a bargain. DeRosa put up career highs in every category last year except batting average, but he's currently looking like he could put up new highs if he continues to play like he is. DeRosa is also an exceptional fielder, having played every position on the field except Pitcher and Catcher.

Rich Hill also dominated the Brewers pitching 7.0 innings, giving up one hit, and one run, being a homerun to Cory Hart. He also had 6 K's. In Rich Hill's final twelve starts last year, he went 6-3 with a 2.65 ERA. That is when many experts suggested that Hill could have made a big step toward becoming a good big league pitcher. And this game definitely hints that he has reached that stage in his career.

FANTASY SUGGESTION FOR MARK DeROSA: DeROSA IS A GOOD BALLPLAYER, BUT I WOULD WAIT AND SEE IF HE CONTINUES TO PRODUCE. AND IF HE DOES, IF YOU ARE LACKING AT SECOND BASE OR NEED AN EXTRA BENCH PLAYER TO PLATOON, I WOULD PICK HIM UP. BUT IT IS ONLY IF YOU ARE SERIOUSLY LACKING AT SECOND BASE.

FANTASY SUGGESTION FOR RICH HILL: HILL WOULD BE A GOOD PICKUP BECAUSE IF HE HAS ANOTHER GOOD START, ESPECIALLY FOLLOWING THE ONE HE JUST HAD, PEOPLE WILL START TO LOOK AT HIM (ESPECIALLY WITH THE EXTRA COVERAGE ON ESPN). HE IS A GOOD LEFTY AND HE WILL GET A LOT OF RUN SUPPORT THIS YEAR. HE IS A GREAT END OF THE ROTATION GUY FOR YOUR TEAM AND WOULD ADD AT LEAST 10 WINS TO YOUR TEAM.

Jeff Conine Remains Red Hot

Despite the freezing cold, Reds 1B/OF Jeff Conine hit a three run homerun and a triple, leading the Reds to a 6-1 victory over the Pirates. Conine also had a game-tying single and scored the go-ahead run against the Cubs on Thursday. Last year, Conine hit .273 with 10 HR and 67 RBI with the Orioles and Phillies. He's compiled a .286 AVG with 208 HR and 1035 RBI over 18 seasons with the Royals, Marlins, Orioles, Phillies, and Reds. He's noted as being on both Marlins World Series Teams, but is now a utility player for the Reds.

FANTASY SUGGESTION: DESPITE TWO GOOD GAMES, HE IS JUST NOT FANTASY BASEBALL TEAM MATERIAL. EVEN IF HE DOES GET A STARTING JOB, HE WON'T PRODUCE ENOUGH IN ANY CATEGORY TO INVEST IN HIS SERVICES.

Rodriguez: "It's from the rosin bag"

An allegation started when Internet photos showing a white substance under the bill of Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez's cap and the pitcher repeatedly touching his hat. Rodriguez quickly responded to the allegations in a chat with reporters yesterday. "It's from the rosin bag," Rodriguez said, showing reporters his cap before Thursday's game. "If that's illegal, why is there a rosin bag on the mound? You can come check me any time you want. I have nothing to hide." Mike Scioscia also talked about and came to the defense of his closer. "It's stupid — it's rosin," Scioscia said. "You touch the rosin bag and adjust the brim of your cap, chances are you're going to get a white buildup there. That's what it is." To his defense, Rodriguez does often grab the rosin bag between pitches or batters. Furthermore, many pitchers adjust their uniforms during the game and some every other pitch. Rodriguez was 2-3 last year with a 1.73 ERA and 47 SV. His breakout year came in 2005 when he had 45 SV with an 2.67 ERA.

Cubs Put Prior on DL

Thursday, April 5, 2007

Iowa Cubs, that is. The Iowa Cubs announced today that pitcher Mark Prior will be place on the seven day disabled list for what they are calling, "shoulder fatigue." They are calling it fatigue because he is not ready to pitch yet. "If he needs another seven [days], we'll give him another seven," Hendry said. "Until he's ready to go five or six [innings]." After pitching for the first time in Spring Training in two years, the Cubs still felt he wasn't ready to go, and optioned him to Triple-A. Career wise, Prior is 42-29 with a 3.51 ERA. However, in 2003, Prior had 18 wins. Since 2003, Prior has had 18 wins with 17 losses compared to the six he had in 2003. He had a 2.43 ERA in 2003 and since then, he has a had a 4.97 ERA. Although many people see him returning to the bigs in May, it is much more likely to see him around June, possibly July.

Bonds Hits 735

In the first innings of tonight's Giants, Padres game, Barry Bonds connected on a Chris Young pitch and hit it into the first row in left center for his first homerun of the season, putting him 20 shy of tying Hank Aaron's homerun record. Bonds is entering his 22nd year in baseball, but as of late, he has been surrounded by questions of whether or not he has taken steroids. Has his race for 755 been tarnished? One thing is for certain, Bonds has become a average homerun hitter, with an average batting average.

FANTASY SUGGESTION: SINCE SLUGGING PERCENTAGE OR ON BASE PERCENTAGE IS NOT USED IN THE LEAGUES, DON'T BOTHER PICKING HIM UP, HE IS WORTHLESS OTHERWISE. HE WON'T HIT AS MANY HOMERUNS AND HIS RBI PRODUCTION WILL NOT OUTWEIGH THE FACT THAT HE WON'T HIT 40 HOMERUNS ANYMORE.

Lilly Lights Out in Cubs Debut

In his Cubs debut, Ted Lilly was looking like he was worth 40 million dollars. Lilly pitched seven innings, giving up three hits, one earned run, and struck out nine. Not only that, he picked up his first career RBI. Lilly, who came over from Toronto during the off season, is 60-58 in his career. Also helping Lilly, new Cub Mark DeRosa made an amazing defensive play and hit a two-run single in the eighth to give the Cubs a 4-1 lead. Lilly surrendered one walk to Griffey Jr.

FANTASY SUGGESTION: IF HE IS STILL A FREE AGENT, WATCH HOW HE DOES IN HIS NEXT FEW STARTS BECAUSE HE IS SOMEONE THAT YOU COULD NEED TO GET A COUPLE EXTRA POINTS TO BEAT AN OPPENENT LATE IN THE WEEK. HE EATS UP A LOT OF INNINGS AND IS ALMOST GURANTEED TO RACK UP STRIKEOUTS.

Sizemore Already Looking Like Star

The anticipation this year to see what Grady Sizemore could do is already drawing MVP buzz. Although it has only been two games, Sizemore is hitting .400 with 2 HR and 3 RBI. His first homerun came off the second pitch from Jose Contreras in the first inning and his second homerun gave the Indians the lead. Yes, Sizemore is a leadoff hitter but not only has he helped with his hitting in years past, but he is an incredible fielder which has held that outfield together since he has been with the Indians. Along with that, his leadership on the field cannot go ignored. Career wise, Sizemore is a .286 career hitter with 56 HR and 184 RBI in just four years with the Indians.

Grady Sizemore Projection

FANTASY SUGGESTION: SIZEMORE IS ALREADY A GREAT PLAYER AND WOULD NOT BE A FREE AGENT IN YOUR LEAGUE. HOWEVER, IF YOU ARE OVER LOADED WITH PITCHERS AND ARE LOOKING FOR A GREAT PLAYER, HE IS DEFINITELY A PLAYER TO CONSIDER. GREAT POWER, AND WILL NOT ONLY SCORE RUNS, BUT WILL PRODUCE THEM TOO.

Carpenter Out Indefinitely

Cardinals ace and 2006 Cy Young winner Chris Carpenter will miss his next start for what the Cardinals are calling, "right elbow inflammation." Although Carpenter is not on the disabled list, it is uncertain if he will be ready for his next start after a full week off. "Obviously, anytime something's going on, it's one, frustration, and two, disappointment," Carpenter said. "Three, I don't know if it's alarming or not. I want to make sure it's OK. With that said, everybody I've talked to -- doctors, trainers -- are not alarmed. They don't think it's anything serious." If Carpenter was to miss a month at most, it would seriously affect the Cardinals because their pitching is already weak, and losing him would put them behind the new and improved Brewers, Cubs, and Astros! Assuming it is not to serious Cardinals fans, he will just miss one start and return to pitching but worst case scenario, this could turn out to affect the Cardinals 2007 season.

FANTASY SUGGESTION: DON'T DO ANYTHING YET, WAIT AND SEE WHETHER THE CARDINALS PLACE HIM ON THE DL, OR GIVE HIM MORE TIME TO TAKE ACTION. BUT IF THE CARDINALS DECIDE TO GIVE HIM MORE TIME, I WOULD CONSIDER SHOPPING HIM BECAUSE THAT MEANS SOMETHING IS WRONG AND HE WON'T BE THE SAME FOR THE IMMEDIATE PART OF THE SEASON.

Johnson Successful in Triple-A Outing

New Diamondback Randy Johnson had a successful minor league outing for the Tucson Sidewinders throwing sixty pitches over four innings. However, Johnson is still far away from joining the team. Not only will Johnson join Single-A Visalia to pitch next week, but the following week he will be back in Tucson for another game. And if all is well and there are no problems to report, he will then join the Diamondbacks. "We're giving him the normal progression going forward," manager Bob Melvin said before the team's game against Colorado on Tuesday night. "This is his spring training right now. We can't cut that too short." Yet, Melvin still thinks Johnson, 43, can be an elite pitcher. Although Johnson won't even be the number two pitcher, he is still expected to balance out the rotation and guide the young players throughout the season.

FANTASY SUGGESTION: IF HE IS STILL A FREE AGENT IN YOUR LEAGUE, PICK HIM UP NOW! RANDY JOHNSON IS BACK IN ARIZONA AND HAS A SOLID TEAM BEHIND HIM. I EXPECT HIM TO PICK UP ATLEAST 14 WINS AND BE ABLE TO LOWER HIS ERA FROM LAST YEAR. HE STILL HAS SOMETHING LEFT, AND HE WOULD BE A HUGE SLEEPER IF YOU COULD GET HIM.

Felix Hernandez Proving Himself Worthy

Monday, April 2, 2007

Felix Hernandez struck out 12 over eight innings as Seattle shut out Oakland 4-0 on Opening Day. Hernandez, 20, only allowed 3 hits. Hernandez had something to prove after a disappointing 2006 going 12-14 with a 4.52 ERA and said he worked on it all spring. "I was excited," Hernandez said, laughing. "In the off season, I worked for this," with a diet of primarily rice, along with daily sprints and weight training in his native Venezuela. Coaches were impressed by his control and command over the defending AL West Champions. Hernandez threw first-pitch strikes to 21 of the 29 batters he faced and kept his pitch count somewhat low.

Ben Sheets is Back

Ben Sheets did not show the Dodgers any sympathy at Miller Park today retiring 24 of the final 25 hitters in a 7-1 victory. In nine innings, he surrendered a run on two hits and no walks, striking out three. This is a good feeling for all Brewers fans after Sheets only pitched in 17 games last year. Despite this being 12th career complete game, Sheets has only had one winning year which was in 2005 when he went 10-9. However, he racks up innings and usually has huge strikeout numbers. Since 2001, he is 61-69 with a 3.83 ERA and 942 K, all with the Brewers.

The Cubs are said to be valued around $600 million dollars. People who are known to have expressed interest in buying the Cubs include Don Levin, owner of the minor-league hockey team Chicago Wolves.

Padres Lock Up Gonzalez

The Padres and Adrian Gonzalez have agreed to a four year deal, worth 9.5 million dollars. He gets a $500,000 signing bonus, $500,000 this season, $750,000 in 2008, $3 million in 2009 and $4.75 million in 2010. The $5.5 million option for 2011 doesn't include a buyout, and he'll still be arbitration eligible if it's declined. This is a good deal for the Padres, especially while he is still cheap. Gonzalez hit .304 last year with 24 HR and 82 RBI with the Padres last season.

Cubs, Zambrano Close in on Deal

The Cubs are closing in on a five year contract, worth at least 85 million dollars with ace Carlos Zambrano. Zambrano has decided to waive his deadline to finish the deal by Opening Day that his agent says is in the final stages. "Our discussions have progressed to the point where we're going to extend the deadline for an indefinite period of time," Praver told FOXSports.com on Sunday. Zambrano, 64-42 lifetime with a 3.29 ERA, is a two-time All-Star. He has pitched 209 or more innings in each of the past four seasons. Agent Barry Praver and GM Jim Hendry are working out the final incentives, including opt clauses and a potential no trade clause.

2007 Preview

AL EAST

Red Sox 93-69

Yankees 89-73

Blue Jays 84-78

Orioles 75-87

Devil Rays 64-98

- the Yankees losing Wang and Pettitte still behind schedule doesn't help their cause with their already old rotation and even with Clemens, he didn't even dominate with the Astros last year (wins and losses wise). The Red Sox are fresh with Drew, Lugo, Pedroia, and Matsuzaka which should play in to an already stellar lineup.

AL CENTRAL

Cleveland 90-72

Tigers 88-74

White Sox 86-76

Twins 84-76

Royals 66-96

- the Tigers losing Kenny Rogers doesn't help but they still have a great team. However, it seems Justin Verlander's numbers might go down, if only a little. Furthermore, Travis Hafner will be one of the most, if not the most productive player in the AL, along with improving numbers from Sabathia, Westbrook, and Lee.

AL WEST

Angels 91-71

Athletics 88-74

Rangers 84-78

Mariners 72-90

- the Angels have always been successful and with the A's in Manager change and losing Thomas and Zito, they'll probably fall out of contention, but not without a fight.

AL MVP: Alex Rodriguez
- got something to prove to New York and in potential contract year.

AL Cy Young: Johan Santana
- barring injuring, he is dominant almost every start.

AL Rookie of the Year: Delmon Young
- he'll lead that team with surprising power but won't lead the team out of last place.

AL Comeback Player of the Year: Rich Harden
- he is having a great spring and if healthy, could put up Cy Young numbers.

AL Manager of the Year:
Mike Scioscia - with the Angels making a strong push for first, it would be hard not to give it to him.
----------------------------------

NL EAST

Mets 90-72

Phillies 87-75

Braves 86-76

Marlins 75-87

Nationals 51-111

- the Mets will undoubtedly take the NL East. Even better power with new addition Moises Alou, the Mets must hope that their bullpen can hold strong. The Phillies didn't look the same in spring but they will still compete during the season. The Braves improved their bullpen and Tim Hudson, now healthy, will return to form like he was with the A's.

NL CENTRAL

Cubs 87-75

Brewers 86-76

Cardinals 85-77

Astros 79-83

Reds 77-85

Pirates 73-89

- this race is still up in the air. Looking at the rotation for the Cubs, Zambrano is going to have a great year. Lilly will probably put up simliar numbers but could improve with his switch to the NL. Marquis is still be haunted by his terrible ERA last year but is in the same division with something to prove. And looking at his numbers for when he switches teams, it always improves. Rich Hill is making a push to have a above average year, proving that he can be a starter. However, the starters must be able to prove that they can go the distance so the bullpen has something to close on. The Cardinals have a good team. But Eckstein and Kennedy won't give the team much power help, and the bottom end of their rotation is so shaky, it is hard to put your money on a team in a great division, with shaky pitching. Although the Brewers look like they are peaking, Hall has to prove he can lead that team with great numbers, even after changing positions, and Sheets can return to form with high K numbers and put up wins every start. Jenkins numbers are still going down too.

NL WEST

Diamondbacks 91-70

Dodgers 83-79

Padres 82-80

Rockies 79-83

Giants 71-91

- the Dodgers added a leadoff man in Pierre, and Gonzalez seems to have at least one more year in him. Although Schmidt is hardly reaching 90 on the radar gun, he is pitching in the same division and has a great defense behind him. Furthermore, with Ethier getting most of the playing time in right field, he should be able to boost his power numbers, same for Russell Martin NL MVP: Albert Pujols
- wants it bad after being "jipped" last year and has the numbers every year to do it.

NL Cy Young: Carlos Zambrano
- Chris Carpenter won't have the run support he had last year, especially with Edmonds and Encarnacion not quite ready for Opening Day. Although Edmonds is not on the roster, he wasn't himself this spring. And the bullpen backing up the shaky Cardinals rotation isn't as strong as last year. Zambrano will either be riding off his five year contact he will get or trying to bulk up his price for the Mets and Dodgers (won't go to AL, wants to hit). Furthermore, the bullpen improved with Cotts and Wood (potentially) and with Lee back, and Soriano leading off, it makes for an absolutely sick lineup.

NL Rookie of the Year: Kevin Kouzmanoff
- showed great power this spring and kept his average up. Don't be surprised to see him leading the Padres in a lot of hitting categories at the end of the season.

NL Comeback Player of the Year: Derrek Lee
- a freak accident pushed him out in 2006 but he was off to a great start. He had an MVP like season in 2005 and with protection at the top of the order, should get a lot of RBI's along with his own production (HR, OBP).

NL Manager of the Year: Bob Melvin
- the young Diamondbacks with help from Randy Johnson will show huge improvement from last year. Although they will fall short, Melvin will show the baseball world he can still manage a ballclub.
-----------------------------
DIVISION SERIES

Mets
over Cubs
- although the Cubs have a great team, almost better on paper, they will have to prove they can go the distance, after making the playoffs.

Dodgers over
Phillies
- Dodgers have the experienced players to push them into the Championship series.

Red
Sox over Indians
- the Red Sox are just a better team.

Yankees over Angels
- the Yankees will have the team on paper and will be determined to go far.

CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

Dodgers over
Mets
- the Mets are older this year and the Dodgers got younger. Their rotation is strong, but still has something to prove.

Yankees over Red
Sox
- the Yankees will take this series because they already hit their bad streak and can't be stopped. Hideki Matsui and Alex Rodriguez will put up impressive power numbers with Cano and Jeter backing them up. Wang, Pettitte, and Rivera will finally close the door.

WORLD SERIES

Dodgers vs. Yankees

- who knows how this will turn out but I won't determine it until I see who gets home field advantage.
