Rangers Close in on Lofton

Sunday, December 10, 2006

The Rangers and Kenny Lofton are closing in on a one year deal. Lofton, 39, will be their leadoff hitter and play center field. He will be a downgrade from Matthews Jr., but he did not have a bad year. He batted .301 with 3 HR, 41 RBI, and 32 SB. He also had four outfield assists and only three errors. The Cubs and Rockies were also pursuing the center fielder.

The Tigers have agreed to a one year deal, worth 2.5 million dollars with Jose Mesa. He went 1-5 with a 3.86 ERA

with Lofton going to Texas, what are the Cubs options FA wise for a CF?

well lou piniella says that pie is still an option. however, I see the cubs looking elsewhere. Darin Erstad and Steve Finley are also availble but they both stink. they might look into jay payton or ryan church via trade. however I would rather not see sean marshall go just yet. we'll know in the next week what plan b is.

jay payton signed with the orioles last week, so I doubt they would trade him away and ryan church was so bad that he was sent down to AA last year, don't know if he recovered from that.
