Mets to Trade Milledge?

Sunday, December 31, 2006

The Mets maybe on the verge of trading Lastings Milledge to the Athletics for Joe Blanton, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Blanton, who went 16-12 with 4.82 ERA would thrive in the NL, especially because he is a ground ball pitcher. Milledge, 21, who still has a boatload of potential, batted .241 with 4 HR and 22 RBI. If this trade happens, Milledge would compete with Bobby Kielty or Mark Kotsay for the starting job in either left or center. Blanton would take the number five spot in the rotation until Pedro Martinez returns and they could send either John Maine or Oliver Perez to the bullpen.

Yankees "Very Close" to Dealing Johnson

A source close to negotiations has said that the Diamondbacks have held discussions with agent Alan Nero about restructuring Randy Johnson's deal. The Yankees, who have also held discussions with the Padres, are looking for at least two prospects, maybe three. Dustin Nippert, Micah Owings and Ross Ohlendorf are three of the best prospects in the Diamondbacks organization that have come up in trade talks. Nippert, 25, was 13-8 with a 4.87 ERA in Triple-A last season and maybe ready for the majors in 2007. Owings was 6-2 at Double-A and 10-0 at Triple-A and Ohlendorf spent most of last season in Double-A, going 10-8 with a 3.29 ERA. If the Yankees are able to pull a trade for at least two of their prospects, they could look to package three or even four of them once they are more developed for a premier pitcher. According to the East Valley Tribune, the most logical trade will be Brandon Medders and Dustin Nippert for Randy Johnson and cash. The Yankees would send all of Johnson's contract to the Diamondbacks allowing them to eat the three or four million that is taken off from his original deal. However, Johnson, who went 17-11 with 5.00 ERA and 172 K, will have to waive his no trade clause to complete the deal.

Mulder's Considering Cleveland?

According to the Boston Globe, the Indians have made a strong offer to Mark Mulder. The offer is believed to be a two year deal, worth 8 million dollars in guaranteed money. However, he can earn up to 15 million dollars in incentives. Agent Gregg Clifton has said that along with Cleveland, the Rangers have been very aggressive in pursuing Mulder and have made a strong offer. Now that Mulder is home from his honeymoon, a decision is expected sometime next week. Mulder, who went 6-7 with a 7.14 ERA is also drawing interest from the Cardinals.

Orioles Sign Huff

The Orioles and Aubrey Huff are closing in on a three year deal, worth 20 million dollars. Huff batted .267 with 21 homers and 66 RBIs with the Devil Rays and Astros, and is probably the best free agent acquisition this off season. His total contract is what players Barry Zito and Vernon Wells will make annually, and Huff is still a great player that will help the Orioles. Not only will he provide protection to Miguel Tejada in the lineup, but it gives the team the option of trading Corey Patterson or Jay Gibbons. A deal should be finalized next week.

Newhan Drawing Interest

According to the Baltimore Sun, the Mets and Cubs have made strong offers to Dave Newhan. Newhan, who was not tendered by the Orioles, has a great chance to make both clubs, but will probably have to accept a minor league deal. If he were to join the Cubs, he would could make the roster if they decide to send Ronny Cedeno to Triple A Iowa to play regularly. Although, he is almost guaranteed a spot on the Mets roster, assuming the Mets look to trading for a pitcher. Newhan, who batted .252 with 4 HR and 18 RBI will most likely decide after the New Year.

Rockies after Lopez, Lawrence

The Rockies were invited to a private clinic for Brian Lawrence. Lawrence, who missed all of 2006 would benefit with the Rockies. Not only will his sinker keep the ball down, but he has played in the NL West his whole career. He would also help the Rockies because he would be a low budget player. He will be forced to accept a one year deal, loaded with incentives. The Rockies have also had numerous discussions with Javy Lopez and Javy appears to be ready to sign the deal, and compete for the starting job. Lopez batted .251 with 8 HR and 35 RBI with the Orioles and Red Sox.

What's Next for the Mets?

Now that the Mets have struck out on Barry Zito and Jeff Suppan, they are forced to turn to trading to accomplish their needs. However, the Mets still have interest in free agents Tony Armas and Jeff Weaver. Trading wise, they could package a deal with Lastings Milledge and Aaron Heilman for one of the A's starters, preferably Danny Haren. But the A's seem content with their pitching staff and have no interest in trading it away. They may also look into trading for Rodrigo Lopez, who would benefit from a switch to the NL, especially if he is with a run producing team. Is it Minaya's fault that he did not recognize the way the market was going? No, he was smart not to give Zito "Vernon Wells Money." Even if his pitching staff is lacking a premier pitcher, they are still other pitchers that can fill in towards the back end of the rotation, pitchers that are low in cost, but can definitely help a team make it to the playoffs. The way the market is going, the next 200 million dollar man is Carlos Zambrano, set to be a free agent in 2007.

Johnson Not Worth The Risk for Diamondbacks

Orioles Still Looking

The Orioles have picked up talks with Craig Wilson, Carlos Pena, and Aubrey Huff. Oriole scouts like Wilson because of his ability to hit lefties and because of his familiarity with the AL East. Last year with the Yankees and Pirates he hit .251 with 17 HR and 49 RBI. Carlos Pena played with the Red Sox for a part of the year batting .273 with 1 HR and 3 RBI. The Orioles would most likely use him as a bench player, considering he can play 1B and OF. A report from Maryland suggested that the Orioles have made an offer to Aubrey Huff; however, ESPN 1000 squashed that rumor and said that the Orioles were planning to make a offer. The offer is believed to be a three year deal, worth 26 million dollars. Another ESPN 1000 report this morning suggested that the Orioles, Rockies, and Tigers were working towards a three team deal involving players Marcus Thames, Brad Hawpe, and Rodrigo Lopez. Obviously other players would be involved but these are the players they are working a deal around.

Blue Jays to Trade Alex Rios?

Now that Vernon Wells is signed, Alex Rios seems to be the odd man out. He is the most desirable of the three present outfielders on the roster and is the only one that can acquire a proven player. Rios batted .302 with 17 homers and 82 RBI in 128 games last season. He should draw a lot of interest from teams in need of an outfielder and the Blue Jays may be able to acquire a starter. The Dodgers Brad Penny is a possible suitor, but the Dodgers have Pierre, and have him for the next five years. And with the signing of Gonzalez, he will not be an option in left (Either is already slotted for RF). The Cubs are in search of a center fielder, but would only need Rios for one year because of top prospect Felix Pie. But do the Cubs have the proven pitching that would attract the Blue Jays? The Mets, who have an overload of young pitching, would definitely attract the Jays. Pelfrey, Humber, Maine, or Perez might be able to complete a deal. Rios would help balance out the lineup because he is a righty, and he is young. Other teams that might inquire about Rios:

Phillies
Royals
Astros
Padres
Nationals
Marlins

Teams with low budgets may be willing to package two or three prospects for Rios because he is not eligible for free agency for another four years.

The Red Sox traded Phil Seibel to the Angels for Brendon Donnelly. Donnelly is the option for closer, but will most likely be a fallback if they are unable to acquire someone. He went 6-0 with a 3.94 ERA and 53 K. Seibel, 27, had a great season in all the levels of the Red Sox minor league system. He pitched in 80 innings with 1.24 ERA. The Red Sox also signed J.C. Arizona in Search of Pitchers

Diamondbacks GM Josh Byrnes continues to look for pitching. They have made an offer to Mark Mulder, but there have been no reports suggesting he is nearing a decision. According to his agent Greg Clifton, he was very impressed by the Rangers sales pitch. "The Rangers really laid out the red carpet,'' agent Gregg Clifton told ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick. "Mark was very impressed.'' Mulder, who went 6-7 with a 7.14 ERA, is also drawing interest from the Cardinals, Mets, and Indians. They are also looking at free agent David Wells, but according to GM Kevin Towers, Wells is leaning towards returning to San Diego and a deal could be sketched out next week. They may also look to trades and have interest in trading for Oakland's Danny Haren and Texas' Akinori Otsuka.

Yankees After Pineiro, Reitsma, and Mientkiewicz

The Yankees have had preliminary discussions with Doug Mientkiewicz about becoming their new first baseman. They plan to move Jason Giambi to DH, and hope to sign Mientkiewicz, or another first baseman. In 91 games, he batted .283 with 4 HR and 43 RBI. However, he has played a total of 178 games over the past two years. Also, the Yankees are looking to add more pitching and are looking to non tenders Joe Pineiro and Chris Reitsma. If the Yankees signed Pineiro, he would be used as a spot starter because of his abilty to eat up innings. Pineiro, 28, was 8-13 with a 6.36 ERA for Seattle in 2006. Reitsma, who would be used strictly in relief, went 1-2 with an 8.68 in 27 games for the Braves this year before season ending elbow surgery.

- .264 with no outs
- .245 with one out

Matsuzaka, Igawa, Iwamura Updates

The Red Sox have five days to close a deal with Matsuzaka. Not just agree to a deal, but have him pass a physical as well. However, the Red Sox and and his agent, Scott Boras are far from agreeing to any deal. It is believed that Boras is asking for a six year deal, worth about 12 million dollars annually. According to sources close to the Red Sox, they are "pessimistic" about striking a deal. If no deal is agreed upon, the 51.1 posting fee will be returned to the Red Sox and Matsuzaka will have to wait til next year to pitch in the Major Leagues. The Yankees, who bid 26 million for Kei Igawa still have plenty of time to sketch out a deal. However, there seems to be no advancement in negotiations. With the money the Yankees possess though, there is no doubt in my mind they will be able to sign the south paw. The Devil Rays have made some progress, meeting Friday with agent Alan Nero, but financially, are very far apart. They have until December 15 to finish a deal and both sides believe a deal will be completed by then.

Braves After Baldelli

The Atlanta Braves are seriously pursuing Rocco Baldelli in preparation for Andruw Jones leaving via free agency in 2007. They are so eager to trade for Baldelli they are willing to part with top prospects Jarrod Saltalamacchia or Yunel Escobar. They may also be willing to part with Chuck James but his 11-wins this season may make the Braves reluctant to trade him. Kyle Davies name has also come up and one Braves scout has said he would be willing to part with him. Baldelli's contract works perfectly for the Braves. His contract calls for three club options, ending in 2011, with the highest annual salary reaching 9 million. If the Braves were able to trade for Baldelli, it could reopen talks for Andruw Jones. With Jones expecting to walk after 2007, it would slot Baldelli in center for 2007 and beyond. The Braves and Rays have a long way to go though, because it is expected that if the Braves offer Davies and Saltalamacchia, they will want Baldelli and a starter. Baldelli hit .302 with 16 HR, 57 RBI, and 10 SB.

Baldelli's contract:
2007: 750 K
2008: 2.25 million (incentives)
2009: 6 million (2 million buy out club option)
2010: 8 million (2 million buy out club option)

According to Jon Heyman, if the Yankees offer Ted Lilly a 4 year, 40 million dollar offer or match the Cubs (4/44), he will accept their offer. However, Yankee officials prefer Pettitte because they do not want to commit to a four year deal. However, if they give him the "go-ahead" to sign him, he will waste no time to do so. According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Gil Meche will sign with the Cubs to a four year deal, worth 35-37 million. The A's and Mike Piazza have agreed to a one year, 8.5 million dollar deal. Ken Rosenthal says the Mariners and Braves are talking about a swap of Rafael Soriano and Horacio Ramirez. Finally, the Blue Jays are closing in on a deal with Matt Stairs.

Jason Schmidt to Dodgers

According to Ken Rosenthal, the Dodgers have signed Jason Schmidt to a three year deal, worth 47 million dollars. Schmidt went 11-9 last season with a 3.59 ERA with the Giants. Schmidt will probably turn into the number 1 starter if the Dodgers are able to trade Brad Penny.

Brian Bannister for Ambiorix Burgos?

The Mets are closing in on a deal that would send Brian Bannister to the Royals for Ambiorix Burgos. Burgos, 22, was 4-5 with a 5.52 ERA last season for the Royals in 73 1/3 innings. Bannister pitched in eight games for the Mets in 2006, going 2-1 with a 4.26 ERA. Burgos will probably come into spring training without a spot on the roster.

Red Sox Sign Lugo, Drew

The Red Sox announced earlier today that they have signed J.D. Drew to a five year deal, worth 70 million dollars. Not even four hours have gone by before they announced the signing of Julio Lugo. Lugo will receive a four year deal, worth 36 million dollars. Both deals are pending physicals. Theo Epstein will now focus on trading Manny Ramirez; however, he set a deadline tomorrow at 11:00 (CT) where he will stop attempting to trade him.

Team by Team Updates from Orlando

Angels: After signing Gary Matthews to a five year deal, the Angels have kept fairly quiet. GM Bill Stoneman arrived late Monday and had minor discussions with a couple different teams. The Angels are tossing names around like Bartolo Colon and Felix Rodriguez in hopes of acquiring a bat. But other than just rumors, there has been no news to report.

Astros: The latest news from the Winter Meetings for the Astros is that Andy Pettitte wants to pitch next year and is leaning towards returning to the Astros. This could influence Roger Clemens decision on whether he wants to return to Boston, New York, Houston, or just retire. The Astros are also discussing a possible trade for Jason Jennings.

Athletics: The A's appear to be the number one team to sign Mike Piazza as their DH. The deal is a two year deal worth 15 million dollars. They are also working on a deal with Alan Embree.

Blue Jays: The Blue Jays are desperately trying to retain Ted Lilly but it appears that the Cubs are the favorite. Lilly has received a four year offer, worth 40 million dollars. "That's just hearsay from our end," Ricciardi said. "I personally talked to Ted Lilly on Saturday and had a great conversation with him. That's really all I can go on." The Blue Jays are also targeting Gil Meche, and are talking with the White Sox about trading Vernon Wells.

Braves: Reports from Orlando are saying that the Braves may look to trade Adam LaRoche and Marcus Giles. However, there are also rumors concerning Andruw Jones as well. It appears that GM John Schuerholz will look to trades before signings.

Brewers: The Brewers have been talking with teams about trading Geoff Jenkins or Kevin Mench, and have heard the Red Sox are interested in acquiring Derrek Turnbow. The Brewers are also interested in signing Kenny Lofton. They also are working a deal with Tony Graffanino who appears to be staying in Milwaukee.

Cardinals: The Cardinals have inked a five year, 65 million dollar deal with Chris Carpenter. The also plan to meet with Jason Schmidt. Other than that, the Cardinals have been relatively quiet.

Cubs: The Cubs have made an offer to Ted Lilly at an estimated 40 million over four years. They are also looking into Jason Schmidt and Gil Meche. They are also looking to trade Jacque Jones, have inquired about Jason Jennings, and may look to sign outfielders Cliff Floyd and Kenny Lofton.

Devil Rays: The Devil Rays main priority is to build their bullpen. However, that has not stopped them from looking to trade Rocco Baldelli, Jorge Cantu, or Carl Crawford. They are also working on a deal to sign Akinori Iwamura.

Diamondbacks: The Dbacks have been very quiet, hoping they could possibly sign Mark Mulder. The have also met with the agents of Keith Foulke.

Dodgers: The Dodgers appear to be interested in Jason Schmidt and have only had few conversations. On Monday, the Dodgers and Red Sox were talking about a trade for Manny Ramirez, but according to Colletti, the deal has a less than "5 percent" chance of getting done. They are close to finalizing a deal with Mike Lieberthal and rookie closer Takashi Saito.

Giants: The Giants have signed numerous players over the past week and have just began to finalize them. They have signed Dave Roberts, Rich Aurilia, Bengie Molina, and have resigned Pedro Feliz. The Giants are looking into signing Ryan Klesko, and have inquired about the Mariners Richie Sexon and the Cubs Jacque Jones.

Indians: Joe Borowski will take a physical either today or tomorrow for the Indians and then he will sign a one year deal. However, they will still look into signing Octavio Dotel or Keith Foulke. The Indians are really focusing on pitching and beefing up their bullpen after signing Dellucci.

Mariners: The Mariners are in hot pursuit of two pitchers. They plan to meet with Jason Schmidt and appear to be the favorites if the Cubs sign Lilly. However, Schmidt has said he wants to win now and has no problem leaving the West Coast. They are also looking to trade for Jason Jennings, but so are several other teams.

Marlins: The Marlins are showing serious interest in acquiring Rocco Baldelli. The Marlins are reluctant to part with pitching, but according to sources, Scott Olsen could get the deal done.

Mets: The Mets were in hot pursuit of Barry Zito but may have to settle for a veteran because of how high Zito's price tag is. Scott Boras is reportedly asking for a six to seven year deal, worth 102 million dollars. The Rangers seem more willing to offer the big deal.

Nationals: The Red Sox and Giants are talking a three way deal with the Nationals concerning Manny Ramirez. They would probably lose Chad Cordero and possibly acquire Noah Lowry. However it is just speculation. The Nationals Ryan Church, Jose Vidro, and Chad Cordero are all drawing interest in other trades.

Orioles: Rodrigo Lopez is on the topic of most general managers list of pitchers. The Mariners, Brewers, and Mets have all inquired about Lopez but no deal appears imminent. The Brewers have offered Kevin Mench but a formal offer will have to be sketched out. The Braves appear interested in Brian Roberts but the Orioles are reluctant to trade him.

Padres: The Padres are closing in on a deal with Greg Maddux. The deal is estimated at a one year deal worth 10 million dollars with an option for one more. They are also interested in Jason Schmidt and Ronnie Belliard.

Phillies: A frustrating off season so far might make a turn for the worst. Pat Burrell is drawing little to know interest and the Phillies continue to struggle to find pitching. Eaton only pitched in 65 innings and pitched okay when he returned. They are looking to Chicago to acquire Freddy Garcia, possibly reuniting Aaron Rowand. The Cubs might also be interested in Aaron Rowand because they are in need of a center fielder.

Pirates: The Pirates are talking with the Braves and Reds about Adam LaRoche and Adam Dunn. They have also inquired about Trot Nixon for right field. None of these deals appear to be finalized soon. The Pirates do have a slight advantage with the overload of pitching. They could acquire a decent hitter for a pitcher or two.

Rangers: The Rangers and Vicente Padilla have agreed to a three year deal, worth 33 million dollars. This will set the minimum for other second tier pitchers like Ted Lilly and Gil Meche. The Rangers also expect to make a serious run for Barry Zito, who is seeking a six year deal, worth 17 million annually.

Red Sox: The Red Sox are close to signing Julio Lugo and J.D. Drew. They also plan to finalize a deal with Daisuke Matsuzaka. Theo Epstein has also set a deadline for when he will stop trying to trade Manny Ramirez. THIS JUST IN: The Red Sox have agreed to a 5 year deal, worth 70 million dollars. I do not see Manny Ramirez being traded because the teams that are pursuing him do not have what the Red Sox want. Or they are not willing to part with what the Red Sox want.

Reds: The Reds have signed a 2 year deal, worth 5 million dollars total with Dave Weathers. Other than Weathers and Gonzalez, that is all the news from the Reds office. Adam Dunn is drawing some interest from teams but no deals have been worked out.

Rockies: The Rockies have signed LaTroy Hawkins and he will be their setup man. Several teams have inquired about Jason Jennings including the Astros, Cubs, Mariners, Mets, Rangers, and Twins. They also have interest in Kenny Lofton and Darin Erstad.

Royals: The Royals have focused on pitching, and have made an offer to Miguel Batista (3/24). They also have put Gil Meche as a top priority but it appears he will either go to the Cubs or Blue Jays.

Tigers: Jeremy Bonderman and Marcus Thames' names have come up in trades but the Tigers do not appear to be interested in trading them. They are interested in trading for Marlins pitcher Renyel Pinto. Pinto, 24, went to the Marlins last year in the Juan Pierre deal. He pitched from the bullpen most of the season.

Twins: The Twins are serious about acquiring Jason Jennings and a deal could get struck by tomorrow. With Liriano out for 2007 and Radke to retire, the Twins are looking for pitching and due to a lack of funds, will have to do it by trade. They are also working a deal to keep Rondell White.

White Sox: White Sox pitcher Brandon McCarthy may start in AAA next year unless they can trade one of their pitchers. Javier Vasquez and Freddy Garcia have both drawn a lot of interest from the Mets, Phillies, and Yankees and it is more than "50 percent" possible that one of them gets traded. The White Sox are also interested in acquiring Vernon Wells but I do not know if they have what it takes to trade him. They also have interest in Aaron Rowand.

Yankees: The Yankees have made an offer to Andy Pettitte worth 15 million for one year. The Yankees and Bernie Williams have also had minor discussions about a deal. They are also close to a deal with Kei Igawa. They have interest in Ted Lilly, Gil Meche, and Freddy Garcia (via trade).

Yankees, Red Sox Grumblings

The Yankees and Red Sox both had a productive Tuesday. The Yankees have made a one year offer to Andy Pettitte, worth about 15 million dollars. The Astros have also reportedly made an offer but the numbers were not disclosed. The Red Sox have yet to finalize anything with Daisuke Matsuzaka, and it appears nothing will happen until next week. According to Steven Phillips, it appears that Julio Lugo will sign with the Red Sox to play shortstop next season. He had an offers on the table from the Mets and the Cubs.

Pirates Pursuing Trot Nixon

Instead of pursuing youth like GM Dave Littlefield said, the Pirates are seriously pursuing Trot Nixon to play right field. The Pirates have had numerous right fielders over the years, most recently, Jeromy Burnitz. Nixon batted .268 with 8 HR and 52 RBI in his 10th season with the Red Sox.

Cubs Offer 4/40 to Lilly

According to the Chicago Tribune, the Cubs have offered Ted Lilly a four year deal, worth 40 million dollars. The Cubs also have had discussions with free-agent right-handers Jason Schmidt and Gil Meche, who reportedly has the Cubs at the top of his wish list. The Cubs also are looking for another outfielder, possibly Julio Lugo. But according to Hendry, Lugo probably is "leaning" to a team that will use him as a shortstop. If the Cubs are unable to sign Lugo, they will settle for Kenny Lofton. They are also reportedly working a deal to sign Cliff Floyd so he can platoon with Matt Murton in left field. Jacque Jones, who formally requested a trade at the end of the season, is drawing little interest. The Giants are interested in Jones, who was unhappy with the treatment from the fans in right field, is set to make 10 million over the next two years. If they sign Lilly, they will probably look to trade for a pitcher, before they sign another pitcher. They have about 25 million dollars left to spend. So signing Lilly and Meche is not out of the question, but Meche, Lilly, Floyd, and Lofton would be a stretch.

Padres Looking to Hit it Big

A report late last night surfaced saying that the Padres and Greg Maddux were closing in on a agreement. The Padres and Greg Maddux are just talking though, and hope to sketch out a deal by the end of the week. That is not all they are talking to though. According to ESPN.com, the Padres are meeting with Ronnie Belliard and his agent today to discuss a deal. It appears that Tony Graffanino is going to resign with the Padres and that Mark Loretta does not have that much interest in returning to San Diego. Ronnie Belliard is not a bad fallback though. He batted .272 with 13 HR and 67 RBI with the Indians and Cardinals. The Padres will also join the Cubs, Mariners, and Dodgers in their hopes of signing Jason Schmidt. Schmidt is seeking a 3-4 year deal, worth 15 million dollars annually.

Royal Call For Arms

The Royals, in desperate need of pitching, are looking into second tier pitchers that would drastically improve their pitching staff. They have an offer on the table to Gil Meche; however, the Cubs appear to be the favorite to land him because of his relationship with Lou Piniella. The Blue Jays, Yankees, and Giants are also going after Meche. The Royals have also had talks with Miguel Batista, and appear to be the finalists to land him with the St. Louis Cardinals. The Royals are believed to have offered a three year deal worth 24 million dollars. However, Batista had a 7.74 ERA in 57 innings with Kansas City in 2000. The Royals also signed Dewon Brazelton and invited him to Spring Training.

Mike Lieberthal to Sign With Dodgers

The Dodgers are expected to announce the signing of Mike Lieberthal to a one year deal to be their backup catcher. He only played in 67 games and might have to compete for a spot if Toby Hall is tendered. Russel Martin appears to be the starter because he did great for the Dodgers last year. Lieberthal batted .273 with 9 HR and 36 RBI.

Seven Teams After Lilly

Earlier today, Jason Stark reported that Ted Lilly was set to sign with the Cubs. However, the rumor was false and Lilly's agent is planning to meet with the following teams tomorrow: Cubs, Giants, Yankees, Blue Jays and Mariners. Larry O'Brien was quick to squash the rumor that he has agreed to a deal with the Cubs. Lilly is seeking a four-year deal in the $35-40 million range, and the Cubs are among the clubs to have made him an offer. "We're beyond the preliminary stage [with the Cubs], but our discussions are ongoing," O'Brien said. Yankees GM Brian Cashman has said he has had discussions with O'Brien and they both have interest in returning to New York. Finally, Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi has offered Lilly arbitration and he has til Thursday to accept. However, O'Brien says that they have had regular discussions and plans to meet with them tomorrow.

Winter Meetings Day 1 Update

Today was the first day of the baseball Winter Meetings and already big names are coming up.

-According to Jason Stark, Ted Lilly is set to sign a deal with the Cubs. The deal is similiar to the one Jarrod Washburn received from the Mariners (4/37).

-Vicente Padilla is closing in on a deal with the Rangers. It is expected to be a 3-4 year deal worth 9-11 million dollars.

- The Dodgers and Red Sox discussed a deal that would send Manny Ramirez to L.A., but the Dodgers call a deal getting done as a long shot.

- Ken Rosenthal believes that Zito will either be signed by the Rangers or Mets, a deal that could give him 17 million a year over six years.

- The Mets plan to pursue Javier Vasquez

- The Pirates are looking to trade for Adam La Roche, but the Braves do not want to trade him.

- Pedro Feliz, Rich Aurilia, and Benji Molina have signed with the Giants, and Jose Guillen has signed with the Mariners.

Borowski to Indians, Weathers to Reds

The Indians and Joe Borowksi have reached a one year agreement that is pending a physical. Borowski, who failed his physical to sign a multi-year with the Phillies, will be the closer to start the year with the Indians. Borowski had 36 saves in 72 games. The Reds and Dave Weathers have reached an agreement for two years, 5 million dollars total. Weathers, who finished with a 3.54 ERA in 73 2/3 innings will sign the deal if he passes his physcial. Also, Twins pitcher Brad Radke plans to announce his retirement before Christmas.

Jacque Jones for Jason Jennings?

The Cubs have offered Jacque Jones to the Rockies for Jason Jennings. Jones, who is scheduled to make 4 million in 2007 and 5 million in 2008, would probably then be traded some where else. To get a deal done, the Cubs would probably need to trade one of their young pitchers too. Hendry has said that Rich Hill is untouchable, so he will look to trade one of the young pitchers who had success in AAA, or something like Juan Mateo or Carlos Marmol. Jones batted .285 with 27 HR and 81 RBI. Jennings pitched 9-13 with a 3.78 ERA and 142 K. The Cubs are looking to add a center field, and it appears they are either going to sign Julio Lugo or Kenny Lofton.

Braves sign Tanyon Sturtze

The Braves and Tanyon Sturtze have agreed to a one year deal, worth $ 750 K. Though, he will make $350 K if he spends one day on the Braves' 25-man roster. Lofton Fallback for Cubs

According to Chicago Tribune, the Cubs are working to sign Kenny Lofton to a one year deal. Instead of signing someone like Julio Lugo for ten million, the could sign Lofton for 5-7 million for one year. By pursuing Lofton, the Cubs could be serious about adding two premier pitchers. A one year deal would also guarantee that Felix Pie would be the center fielder in 2008. But does Lofton just want to be a one year rental? The Cubs would probably need to give him a two year deal and platoon Pie with Lofton in '08. If the Cubs sign Lofton, it would be his second stint with the Cubs. In 2003, he came over with Aramis Ramirez for Bobby Hill, Jose Hernandez, and Matt Bruback. Lofton hit .301 with 32 bases stolen.

Three Horse Race for Lugo

According to the New York Daily News, the Mets have made an offer to Julio Lugo. The Red Sox, have a growing interest in Lugo to play shortstop, while the Cubs have interest in having him play center field. Lugo, 31, batted .278 with 12 homers, 37 RBI and 24 steals with the Devil Rays and Dodgers. Julio Lugo's agent, Jeff Borris, is believed to have a good relationship with Omar Minaya, so if Lugo wants to go to New York, there should not be a problem. However, Cubs manager Lou Piniella may have influence in luring Lugo to Chicago. Lugo admired Piniella very much and may want to be reunited with his former manager. Lugo has played mostly shortstop in his career but has played 17 games in the outfield, so do not rule the Cubs out. But if Lugo feels most comfortable playing shortstop, the Red Sox have the advantage. However, having to spend nearly 65 million on a pitcher and working a trade for Manny Ramirez, they might fall a bit short with a bid, compared to the Mets and Cubs at least. Lugo is seeking a 4 year deal, worth 8-10 million annually. The Mets and Cubs have both made offers to the free agent 2B/SS/OF.

J.P. Ricciardi is Ready to Buy

The Blue Jays are looking to add two starting pitchers, a utility man, and a pitcher to add to the bullpen. They are hoping to retain Ted Lilly, and then go out and sign Gil Meche. However, Lilly and the Cubs are having serious negotiations and are meeting next week. Meche, who is supposedly drawing interest from a dozen teams is going to command at least 10 million. To fill the void for Justin Speier, they will look to add a solid setup man. As for a utility man, they will look into signing someone more about defense, then offense. Someone who can play both first and third would fit their needs. John Mabry, who can play 1st, 3rd, LF, and RF might fit the description. However, he is old and may not want to move him family up there. He also batted .205 with 5 HR and 25 RBI. He may look to trade Vernon Wells too, but only if his name if brought up. I see them looking to trade Wells at the trade deadline, when a team is looking to make a run at the playoffs.

Braves Have Holes to Fill

Braves GM John Schuerholz will have to hit the ground running Monday because he has a lot of holes to fill. The bullpen, who had a league leading 29 blown saves also had a 4.39 ERA. Middle relievers are being gobbled up so if he wants a solid bullpen, he will have to move fast. The have Bob Wickman, and they may look to Scott Linebrink of San Diego. Daryle Ward is arguably the best pinch hitter since Lenny Harris. He was 8-14 with seven RBI's and wants to return to the Braves. The Braves tried to trade Tim Hudson when they thought Tom Glavine was going to return to the Braves. However, it is now unlikely they will trade the slumping pitcher who went 13-12 with a 4.86 ERA. They may look to a low level pitcher like Miguel Batista to solidify their pitching staff. The Braves were looking to sign Dave Roberts but his price went way out of range. They will look to add a speedy, contact hitting leadoff man but it will be hard to find. Braves leadoff hitters hit .268 and are looking for someone who can hit close to.290. Willy Aybar might be their answer. He hit .331 with a .421 OBP in 148 at-bats as a leadoff man.
