Furcal Contract Update

Tuesday, May 6, 2008

According to Buster Olney, Rafael Furcal will walk if he does not get a deal by mid-season. Furcal is hitting .366 with 5 HR this season, and is really carrying the Dodgers this season. The Dodgers might not want to give him a deal so soon if Chin-Lung Hu continues to hit well. However, if they lose Furcal, he will ask for big money on the market, bigger than the money he got three years ago from the Dodgers.

The Red Sox look like an obvious choice. Julio Lugo is struggling at shortstop and bringing in Furcal would make that infield one of the best. The Cardinals currently have Cesar Izturis at shortstop, and opening up the wallet for Rafael Furcal would make this team a lot better in 2009. The Orioles are another option, but he probably wants to go to a contender.

He's having an amazing season so far, but not carrying the whole team...Kemp was the NL player of the week, Pierre is hitting, Martin busted out of his slump, and the pitching is coming around.

They won't get rid of Furcal because HU isn't hitting well, nor an option to replace Furcal who will most likely start in the NL all star game if he continues to play the way he is.

i agree with the anonymous above... but anyway i couldve sworn that he said he didnt want contract talks during the season and that he said he wanted to deal with the dodgers during the offseason

No to the Redsox for Furcal. They have a ton invested in Lugo and a guy in waiting in Lowrie. Plus you already have a leadoff guy and pedroia in the 2 hole. They will not pay 13-15 mil for another aging SS to hit at the end of the lineup.
