Yankees Will Include Hughes

Friday, November 30, 2007

The Yankees plan to include Phil Hughes in the deal that would bring Johan to Santana to the Yankees for Melky Cabrera and Jose Tabata, according to the New York Daily News. Personally, I think the Twins would have been smart to try and get two of their better pitchers, like Ian Kennedy and Jeffery Marquez, along with Cabrera and Tabata. You then acquire four potential studs to lead the Twins in a new direction. Whichever trade goes down, whether it is with the Yankees, Red Sox, or Dodgers, the Twins are definitely the winners. Not only do they acquire a boatload of potential All-Stars, but they are avoiding a big contract on their payroll for the next several years. I'm sure this trade will get done during the Winter Meetings because it looks like the Twins would like to prepare for the 2008 season as soon as possible.

Capuano to Cardinals?

As the Cardinals Front Office heads to Nashville for the Winter Meetings, they remain very interested in Brewers pitcher Chris Capuano. Capuano struggled with the Brewers this past season going 5-12 with a 5.10 ERA and 132 K, but has the ability to put up big numbers, as he did in 2005. I'm not sure what the Cardinals could offer, but you cannot rule out a package surround around Scott Rolen and Capuano. If the Cardinals would absorb some of his contract, it is very realistic. They could offer Anthony Reyes for Capuano and cash. I think the Brewers would be open to something like that, but I'm not sure if the Cardinals are ready to give him up. For now, I consider the Cardinals a sleeper for a lot of big name free agents available, including Kyle Lohse and Carlos Silva. I'll look into this next week while at the Winter Meetings.

Cardinals Sign Izturis

The Cardinals signed Cesar Izturis to a one year contract, replacing David Eckstein. The deal is worth 2.85 million dollars, so it isn't exactly bad, but Izturis is not a starter. He is above average defensively, but did not play very well in the NL Central over the past two seasons. By not signing Eckstein, it seems that they will focus on pitching coming into next weeks Winter Meetings.

Nationals Acquire Milledge

The Mets traded Lastings Milledge to the Nationals for Brian Schneider and Ryan Church. I think this is a good deal for both teams. For the Mets, it gives them a solid outfielder who will get the job done. Church batted .272 with 15 HR and 70 RBI, but has batted .340 with 3 HR and 12 RBI in 19 games at Shea Stadium. Schneider gives them more depth behind the plate and makes it seem morel likely that Estrada will be let go. Not only does Schneider have experience behind the plate, but he is familiar with the pitchers on the Mets, and the batters in that division. As for the Nationals, they acquire a solid outfielder who should only get better, especially in a low media environment. Milledge will play center field for the Nationals which probably means they will no longer go after Elijah Dukes or Andruw Jones.

Astros Sign Matsui

The Astros and Kaz Matsui have agreed to a three year deal, worth 15 million dollars. This is a good move for the Astros, who greatly needed an upgrade in their infield. They beat out the Rockies and Cubs. The Rockies will probably look in house as the Cubs may go through trade as they look for a lefty infielder.

Kei Igawa To Padres?

Thursday, November 29, 2007

It appears that Andy Pettitte will retire opening a spot for Ian Kennedy in the rotation. Although it is not official, I am hearing that is what he is leaning towards. Kei Igawa is the sixth man in the rotation as of right now and will probably move to the bullpen. However, many teams are inquiring about Igawa which makes me think they will trade him. Igawa is making four million a year and will not be a free agent until 2011, so he is worth taking a chance on. The Padres inquired about him in August, but could not work anything out. A couple teams I expect to be interested include the Diamondbacks and Twins, who are both in need of pitching, and the Mariners and Marlins. Igawa was not impressive this season going 2-3 with a 6.25 ERA and 53 K in 14 games, but he is capable of being successful. It would only cost them two low-level prospects and force them to pay for some of his contract.

Pierre Drawing Interest

The Dodgers are apparently shopping Juan Pierre in hopes of finding a team willing to take on his contract. Pierre signed a five year deal worth 44 million dollars and after batting .293 with 0 HR, 41 RBI, and 64 SB, they will look for someone with more power. I would not be surprised if teams were interested in Pierre, but only if the Dodgers took on much of the contract. From what I am hearing, the Dodgers are calling around to half a dozen teams hoping that they will discuss it more at next week's Winter Meetings, which I will be attending. It would not surprise me to hear the Padres, Reds, Orioles, and Brewers on the list of teams interested. The Padres are looking for an outfielder and could trade for Pierre to roam center field. The Reds, who are managed by Dusty Baker, a favorite of Pierre's, could offer up Josh Hamilton and another prospect or two and land Pierre. The Orioles and Brewers are both looking for center fielders and do have the young pitching that would entice the Dodgers. I do not think Pierre will be traded, bu we will find out more at the Winter Meetings.

Sources: Yankees Interested In Hawkins

The Yankees plan to make another run at LaTroy Hawkins. After the 2003 season, the Yankees and Cubs were both trying very hard to land Hawkins. He ultimately signed with the Cubs and after one good year, he was traded to the Giants. However, now that he was a key player in the bullpen for the Rockies this season, his value has risen back up. Hawkins is 35, and would probably only get a two year deal, tops. The Yankees are also looking into Ron Mahay, but no word yet on if negotiations are proceeding. Other than the Yankees, the Rockies, Tigers, and Brewers are pursuing him.

Brewers Looking For Center fielders?

The Brewers put in a call to Scott Boras seeing what Andruw Jones would cost for 2008. Unfortunately for Brewers fans, they will not pursue him: "I didn't get the sense we could get something done," said Melvin. But now that we know they are looking for an outfielder who can produce, and here is a list of players they might go after:

Corey Patterson, Orioles

Stats: .269 AVG, 8 HR, 45 RBI, 37 SB
- Although he did not put up the best numbers, he has speed and experience in the National League Central. Now that he is a more experienced as a ball player, he would probably put up pretty decent numbers at Miller Park. Bringing in him would allow them to move Bill Hall to left field, and would also give them an option at lead off, or lower in the lineup. For Patterson, you are probably looking at a three to four year deal worth 6-8 million annually.

Mike Cameron, Padres
Stats: .242 AVG, 21 HR, 78 RBI, 18 SB
- Mike Cameron is 35, and put up decent power numbers but did not have the best average. He is not expected to return to the Padres so he will be looking for work. The Rangers have shown interest but maybe the Brewers would too. He would also be a good option in center field. His experience and success at Miller Park should turn into good numbers in the NL Central. In eleven games, he has batted .343 with 4 HR. I see him looking at a two to three year deal worth 7-10 million dollars annually.

Other options include Alexei Ramirez, Milton Bradley, and Brad Wilkerson. However, they do have Kevin Mench and Tony Gwynn, and both would make for a nice platoon in the outfield if all else fails.

Mora to Phillies?

The Although the Orioles have not indicated if they will trade Melvin Mora or not, it seems the Phillies would be interested in trading for him if he is available. I think it would be a good fit for both teams. Phillies have solid prospects and could easily trade one or two of them. I could see them trading Jayson Werth, and a low-level pitching prospect for him. Werth would fit nicely in the in the Orioles outfield. Jay Payton struggled in the outfield for the Orioles and bringing in Werth, who is just 29, would give them a solid left fielder for the next several years. And trading Mora would move Huff to third base until top prospect Bill Rowell is ready. However, if Scott Moore proves he can play third base successfully he might get a shot, but he has yet to prove so. They have Luis Hernandez, who can play several positions on the field, who should get a shot to play everyday. I expect the Orioles to resign Corey Patterson to play center field, but from there, maybe they will trade Miguel Tejada.

Report: Brewers Close to Signing Riske

Wednesday, November 28, 2007

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Brewers GM Doug Melvin is awaiting word from one free agent pitcher on whether or not he will accept their offer. Several sources that I talked to tonight believe that it is David Riske who they are awaiting word from. Riske was dominant for the Royals last season going 1-4 with a 2.45 ERA in 52 K in 65 games, and after losing both Linebrink and Cordero, they need some upgrades. The deal is believed to be a three year deal, worth 18 to 20 million, with an option for a fourth year. That seems a little high, but they are desperate for pitching, and might overpay to make sure they sign him. I suspect this will be announced sometime tomorrow with a physical in the days following.

White Sox True 1-B: Coco Crisp

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Aaron Rowand is not interested in joining the White Sox. They exchanged figures briefly before the White Sox saw that he was out of their price range. I guess that is why Torii Hunter is now with the Angels. The White Sox have talked briefly with the Red Sox about a trade, but I think it will pick up at the Winter Meetings. Kenny Williams is very familiar with Coco Crisp because he has done very well against the White Sox, and at U.S. Cellular Field. In 31 games. Crisp has batted .286 with 6 HR and 17 RBI and is just 29. Crisp is in need of a change of scenery after the Red Sox basically handed his spot to Jacoby Ellsbury in the playoffs. He has speed, a solid glove, and the potential to hit about .290. Not only that, but he played four seasons in the AL Central with the Indians, so he is very familiar with the pitchers in that division.

Report: Padres Make Offer To Jenkins

A source close to Geoff Jenkins has told me that the Padres have extended him a two year deal, worth 16-20 million dollars. The deal supposedly has an option for a third year, but I have not been able to confirm that. This does make sense though because the Padres met with Jenkins yesterday for several hours, which would suggest they hope to get a deal done by the Winter Meetings. Jenkins batted .255 with 21 HR and 64 RBI and is not a liability in the outfield yet. He has struggled at PETCO Park batting .234 with 2 HR in 12 games, but has seen success at other parks in the NL West. Personally, I think the Padres should go after Andruw Jones. They have the money to spend, he has the potential to hit 30 HR, and is very reliable in the field. The Padres plan to look in house for second base while will probably look to add a pitcher, and another outfielder.

Twins Set To Acquire Young

The Tampa Bay Rays are very close to trading Delmon Young, Brendan Harris, and Jason Pridie to the Twins for Matt Garza, Jason Bartlett and Juan Rincon. Obviously, this deal is focused around Young and Garza but I think it will help both teams. Young will slot in left field and give some protection to Justin Morneau while Brendan Harris will play second base until Alexei Castilla is ready. For the Rays, Bartlett can play shortstop while Garza will be great in the rotation and Rincon in the bullpen. For now, I think this trade helps the Twins. Young has proven at age 22 that he can hit for power at the major league level while a change of scenery might help his attitude problem. Although Garza is making the strides to get better, he has not shown that he can be successful at this level.

UPDATE: It's Official. The Twins traded Matt Garza, Jason Bartlett, Eduardo Morlan to the Rays for Delmon Young, Brendan Harris, and Jason Pridie.

Rays Close to Signing Percival:
The Rays are also close to signing reliever Troy Percival. More details on this as it develops.

Yankees, Twins Slow Talks Down

Tuesday, November 27, 2007

The Yankees and Twins have begun negotiations involving Johan Santana. "It's preliminary right now." Hank Steinbrenner told the AP. Santana, who has a full no trade clause, will be 29 in March and has told the Twins to start taking offers for him. Obviously, the Yankees see Santana's value. He is a lefty whose numbers would only improve playing for a team like the Yankees, and the Yankees have the money to lock him up for the next five years. The Twins could probably acquire three or four legitimate prospects in return, while also shedding some cash. The Yankees, Mets, Dodgers, and Red Sox are the four teams that are most interested, but it will probably come down to the Yankees and Red Sox. Both teams have prospects to offer, and could afford to not only lose prospects, but to add Santana's salary to their payroll. They are still far apart, because the Twins are looking to land Robinson Cano in the deal, but may have to settle for a package including Joba Chamberlain, Melky Cabrera, and another prospect. Not a bad deal, but we will see what happens. Personally, I think the Red Sox have a better offer ready, but I do not think they are as willing to trade their prospects. We will see what happens next week at the Winter Meetings.

Astros Sign Brocail

The Astros have signed Doug Brocail to a one year deal worth 2.5 million dollars with an option for 2009. Brocail was 5-1 with a 3.05 ERA while holding hitters to a .228 average. He played with the Astros back in 1995 and 1996, and although he was not as effective as he was this year, he should be a valuable piece to their bullpen: "Doug is a battle-tested, veteran reliever who will make our bullpen stronger,'' new Astros general manager Ed Wade said. "He's a great competitor and has shown the ability to pitch a lot while performing equally well against both left-handed and right-handed hitters.'' From what I have heard, the Astros are not done searching for pitchers, so expect them to add at least one more reliever.

Mailbag: Under the Radar Players

Monday, November 26, 2007

Q: As an Angels fan, I see a bright future in Reggie Willits. Maybe it is just bias, but I really think he will be a great outfielder. Do you see him having a chance to shine in the Angels outfield, or in a trade for Miguel Cabrera?

Sean N, California

ELI: Willits played very well this year batting .296 with 0 HR, 34 RBI, and 27 SB. He had a pretty solid OBP in 136 games, so yes, I do think he has a bright future. The only way I see Willits staying in the Angels outfield is if they unload Gary Matthews and move Garrett Anderson to DH, or unload Garrett Anderson and move Willits to DH. I think the Angels are serious about Miguel Cabrera and I'm sure he will be in that trade. If he is not, it wouldn't surprise me if teams begin offer one or two low-level prospects for him, assuming he continues to have success.

Q: I am looking ahead a little bit and was wondering which players you think are on the verge of breaking out?

Tyler, Missouri

ELI: Good question. Well, Reggie Willits is definitely one of those guys. As for three hitters, I would say look out for Howie Kendrick of the Angels, Daric Barton of the Athletics, and Billy Butler of the Royals. A couple other names that come to mind are Geovanny Soto of the Cubs and JR Towles of the Astros. As for pitchers, Jair Jurrjens of the Braves, Kyle Kendrick of the Phillies, and Kason Gabbard of the Rangers. A couple other names that come to mind are Ian Kennedy of the Yankees and Ubaldo Jimenez of the Rockies.

Q: Do you think Elijah Dukes has a chance to come back and have a successful career?

Alex, New York

ELI: Yes, but only if he is traded.

If you have any questions, email me at mlbrumors@gmail.com

News and Notes: Rays Eye Izturis

The Tampa Bay Ray are looking to upgrade defensively, and are looking towards former Gold Glove winner Cesar Izturis. Izturis batted .258 with 0 HR and 16 RBI in 110 games with the Cubs and Pirates, and is not drawing much interest from around the league besides the Rays. I think he would be a good fit for Tampa Bay. It would give them a veteran shortstop with the potential to hit for a solid average, who has a solid glove. It will probably be a one year deal worth between 4-6 million dollars.

Jason Bay to Indians makes sense: The Indians are trying very hard to land outfielder Jason Bay and it seems like a deal with get done because of Mark Shapiro's and Neal Huntington's solid relationship. I'm sure Huntington wants prospects, and because of his familiarity with the Indians farm system, he probably knows the best players the Indians are willing to give up.

Bobby Kielty playing it out: Red Sox backup outfielder Bobby Kielty has become a fan favorite in Boston after his homerun in Game 4 of the World Series, but will let Coco Crisp determine his future with the Red Sox: "With Coco not there, it is a very good situation for me in terms of playing time. ... But with Coco there, it's not an ideal situation for me." Other than the Red Sox, the Braves and Marlins are interested in the outfielder.

Astros Now On Plan B: The Astros have contacted more relievers looking to fill their bullpen. They seem most interested in Troy Percival, but have also talked with Jeremy Affeldt, Doug Brocail, and David Riske.

Mike Hampton struggling to get back: The Braves revealed today that Mike Hampton injured his hamstring in his debut in the Winter League. Hampton has not pitched since 2005, and I'm sure the Braves hope he can return healthy to be in the rotation. If I were the Braves, I would look at it like Hampton will not be back and go out and get a starter. You have Jurrjens, and I think a solid pickup would be someone like Eric Milton or Jon Lieber. The Braves love looking in-house before testing the market so expect GM Frank Wren to talk with his advisor's before making an offer.

Will The Padres Trade Peavy?

Padres ace Jake Peavy has been very dominant over the past six seasons with the Padres. But, next year he will be making 6.5 million with an 11 million dollar option for 2009. If he continues to pitch like he has, he will have a big contract coming towards him. While starting pitching is at a minimum, will the Padres shop Peavy to see what they can get? If I were them, I would not. Although you could get several major league ready players and top prospects, Peavy is the kind of pitcher you build a team around. You have Kouzmanoff, Gonzalez, Greene, catching prospect Colt Morton, outfield prospect Cedric Hunter, and pitchers Chris Young, Jack Cassell, and Cesar Carrillo. Although trading Peavy could probably bring in Jacoby Ellsbury, Jon Lester, Michael Bowden, and another prospect, Peavy is 26, and can pitch successfully for another 15 years. Padres GM Kevin Towers told me "Nobody is untouchable if the right deal presents itself," so you cannot rule out a trade, but I expect the Padres to hold on to Peavy until he says he will test the market, or his numbers drop significantly.

Let me know, should the Padres trade Jake Peavy?

Piazza Likely Heading To Japan

Mike Piazza is looking for a job back east but has yet to find a team interested. I am sure he will talk to teams looking for a DH, but it does not seem any are interested. Piazza can no longer draw fans like he used to, so there is little revenue coming in by signing him. Also, his power numbers have dropped dramatically and he can no longer play catcher or first base. This season, he batted .275 with 8 HR and 44 RBI in 83 games. Sources close to Piazza are reporting that if Piazza cannot find a job here, he hopes to pursue a career in Japan. He would be a huge draw in Japan because he was Hideo Nomo's first catcher and is considered the greatest hitting catcher of all time. Not only that, but it is possible we could see Piazza do well in Japan because they are not sure of his weaknesses, and also because they are not as effective as pitcher in the States. Would Piazza actually go to Japan though? I haven't heard much about Piazza and if he feels disrespected by having to turn to Japan, but I think he would enjoy success there at least for a year. I think it would also lead to better connections with Japanese baseball by having a potential Hall of Famer playing there.

Mariners Losing Ground In Kuroda Hunt?

According to the Japan Times, the Diamondbacks, Dodgers, and Mariners are the leading candidates to sign pitcher Hiroki Kuroda. The Mariners have been very aggressive in attempting to sign him but are far from being a contender in the AL West. The Diamondbacks, who are young and getting better, seem to be a solid fit. However, the Dodgers are starting to look a lot better and Takashi Saito, a close friend of his, might be able to lure him there. You cannot rule out any team yet, so I expect it to come down to money.

Matsui Decision Coming This Week

Sunday, November 25, 2007

According to sources close to Kaz Matsui, Matsui plans on making a decision this week on who he will sign with. There are three teams that have reportedly made offers and they are the Cubs, Rockies, and Astros. However, the Astros and Cubs reportedly have offered more money than the Rockies so it looks like he is on his way out. Matsui batted .288 with 4 HR, 37 RBI, and 32 SB this season with the Rockies, and is just 32. The best second baseman, Luis Castillo, was resigned by his Mets so the top free agent second baseman is probably Matsui. The Cubs have shown interest in him because not only are they looking for a speedy infielder, but they would like Matsui to try and lure Kosuke Fukudome to the Cubs over any other team. Another reason Matsui is attractive is because he is a switch hitter, with playoff experience. The Astros middle infield is one of the weakest in the league so they will definitely be looking to upgrade. A solid pickup right now would be Jeff Keppinger. Keppinger is a utility infielder with the Reds who showed decent power in the second half of the season. He would be inexpensive, and would definitely help. On the market, they could look at Tadhito Iguchi, but they have already shot that down. I don't consider any team to be a front-runner at the moment, so expect to hear something in the next day or so about a possible agreement.

Pitchers Wanted

P Matt Clement
Teams Interested: Blue Jays, Padres, Indians, Diamondbacks, Rockies, and Pirates.
- The Pirates are the latest team to have contacted Clement about pitching next season, but they do not seem to have much of a chance. The NL Central is becoming a strong division again, and Clement would probably only pitch for the Reds, who are managed by Dusty Baker, or the Cubs, his former team. The Padres probably have a good chance because they were his first team, and it is where he lives. Since he didn't pitch this year and missed part of last year, he will probably take a one year deal loaded with incentives.

P Octavio Dotel
Teams Interested: Tigers, Royals, Mets, Braves, Cardinals, and Brewers.
- Dotel is starting to draw more interest now that Francisco Cordero is off the market. The Tigers, who are looking to build up their bullpen, have shown the most interest, but do not rule out a desperate team like the Brewers from coming in. The Royals seem more interested in finding a bat before a reliever, and have already signed Japanese reliever Yabuta. If the Tigers can come in with a three year deal, worth 12-14 million dollars, I bet they would sign him.

P Randy Wolf
Teams Interested: Phillies, Rangers, Rockies, Astros, and White Sox.
- Since the Dodgers are no longer interested in bringing him back, it seems his former team, the Phillies have the best shot. Wolf is probably looking at a similar one to two year deal after he put up 9 wins in the first half of the season. The Astros are interested too, but might aim for something bigger after missing out on Torii Hunter and Scott Linebrink. For now, I think the Phillies are the front-runner but we will see what happens.

P Freddy Garcia
Teams Interested: Mets, Pirates, Marlins, and Astros.
- The Mets were very close to landing Freddy Garcia before the Phillies did, and it is probably better for them now. Not only will they not have to give up anything for him, but he will sign for a reduced price because he struggled and was injured part of this season. The Marlins would also be a good fit because they are looking for veteran pitchers, but his price may jump out of their range.

Dodgers Shopping Relievers?

Saturday, November 24, 2007

Over the past twenty-four hours, the Brewers have been in talks with several teams, according to major league sources. He told me that Dodgers GM Ned Colletti has talked with Doug Melvin of the Brewers about a possible swap, but nothing has gotten serious as of yet. I expect the Brewers to be looking at either Joe Biemel or Jonathon Broxton, so it will cost them. The Dodgers are looking for an outfielder and could ask for Bill Hall in a trade. That would open it up for Tony Gwynn or another replacement. Also, the Brewers are loaded with pitching, so the Dodgers could try to acquire Manny Parra or Carlos Villanueva. I think a trade like this would work for both sides. The Dodgers have some questions marks in their rotation and would benefit from a young arm. The Brewers need to improve their bullpen because if they don't, they will have trouble contending in the NL Central. Other than the Dodgers, the Brewers have reportedly talked with the Blue Jays, Diamondbacks, Nationals, and a fourth unknown team.

Brewers Now Desperate For Pitching

A source tells me that now the Brewers have lost both Francisco Cordero and Scott Linebrink, they are desperate to replace them. The have Derrick Turnbow, but he proved that he could not close this past season so they probably will not try again. I could see them go after former closer Keith Foulke. He said he was planning a comeback and for the Brewers to dish him a one year, incentive laden contract might turn out to be a plus. As for other relievers on the market, David Riske, Ron Mahay, Kerry Wood, and LaTroy Hawkins are all solid additions to the the bullpen. Although they may be expensive, they must find ways to upgrade. They are loaded with starting pitching and that could lead to a trade for a bullpen arm. He did that with Dan Kolb and lost pitching prospect Jose Capellan, who is now fighting for a job with the Tigers. I see the Brewers looking to the Blue Jays for help. They had a solid bullpen and may be willing to give up pitchers like Jeremy Accardo or Scott Downs for a solid pitcher and minor leaguer. Accardo was 4-4 with a 2.14 ERA, 30 SV, and 57 K while Downs was 4-2 with a 2.17 ERA and 57 K. One would be a huge upgrade in the pen and not a big loss for the Blue Jays as they would like to add another starting pitcher.

Offseason Grades

Friday, November 23, 2007

Now just a couple weeks in and here how a couple teams are doing so far:

New York Yankees ---- Grade: B -

- The Yankees got off to a rocky start after loosing Joe Torre and Alex Rodriguez. They were publically ridiculed and many were pulling for a collapse. However, they pulled themselves together and resigned Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera, and Alex Rodriguez. They may have lost Joe Torre, but signed Joe Girardi, and have the prospects ready to make a run at the playoffs again. They are looking to improve their bullpen, and might pull off a trade for maybe Johan Santana.

Grade Reasoning: The Yankees looked bad early on for low balling Torre and I think that really sticks out. They threw a ton of cash at these aging players to keep them from leaving and it will probably hurt them in the end.

Detroit Tigers ---- A -

- The Tigers filled two needs very early in the off season giving them time to improve on other things. They acquire Edgar Renteria and Jacque Jones, and brought back Todd Jones to be closer. They are working hard to sign Livan Hernandez and are close to bringing back Kenny Rogers. If they continue to improve, I wouldn't be surprised if they pass on the Indians and take the division.

Grade Reasoning: Their two biggest needs were filled before most teams got in offseason mode. They acquired an All-Star shortstop with playoff experience and then got that left handed bat for the outfield for one year for next to nothing. They have money to spend on pitching, and plan to be aggressive for the rest of the off season.

Anaheim Angels ----- B +

- The Angels traded Orlando Cabrera for pitcher Jon Garland which helps their infield, but hurts their infield because Brandon Wood is not quite ready. They are looking to sign David Eckstein, but might trade for Miguel Cabrera, which would shift the whole infield around. When they signed Torii Hunter, they shocked the baseball world. It was a great move on their part, but hopefully they are not done yet. Their catching is weak, and they will probably lose Jeff Mathis in any trade. Michael Barrett would be a great option because he is young and has the potential to hit for power with an average above .300.

Grade Reasoning: All they did by trading for Garland was create another hole. They signed Hunter making their outfield even more crowded but it was a great signing. They can now shift Anderson to play DH and put Matthews in left field. They still other needs in the infield and pitching, so they are not done yet. They still have the edge in the AL West, so any upgrade will be good.

BREAKING NEWS: Reds Sign Cordero

According to Ken Rosenthal, the Reds are in serious talks with closer Francisco Cordero. Cordero is believed to be talking to three clubs, the Brewers, Reds, and an anonymous team, but the Reds are the front-runners. The Reds relievers struggled last season and signing Cordero would definitely make them better. Cordero is seeking a four year deal, worth about 45-50 million dollars, and after the season he had, he deserves it. Cordero was 44-for-51 for the Brewers while going 0-4 with a 2.98 ERA and striking out 86. Something could get done as early as today, but will probably get done sometime next week, unless a surprise team jumps in like the Angels did with Hunter.

UPDATE: THE REDS AND CLOSER FRANCISCO CORDERO HAVE AGREED TO A FOUR YEAR DEAL, WORTH 46 MILLION DOLLARS.

Twins Next CF - Coco Crisp

Now that Torii Hunter has left and the Twins are basically in ruins, they will probably trade Johan Santana. The Red Sox, who not only have the money to spend but seem willing to give up prospects seem to be the most likely. The Twins probably want lefty Jon Lester, so with him, they could send Coco Crisp, Kyle Jackson and a couple other top prospects. I see them doing whatever they can to hold onto Jacoby Ellsbury, but I wouldn't be surprised if he is in the deal. The Red Sox traded top prospect Hanley Ramirez who is now an All-Star in Florida. However, no one seems to miss him, probably because they got Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell in return. The Twins think high of Crisp, and from what I am hearing, are asking for Jacoby Ellsbury, Jon Lester, Michael Bowden, and Lars Anderson in a trade for Johan. Anderson is a first baseman who draws comparisons to Adam LaRoche. He batted .288 with 10 HR and 69 RBI in Singe-A and is just twenty. Bowden, 21, is probably a year away but will be very effective. I fully expect Crisp to be traded, and see the Twins as their best suitor. Other than them, the Cardinals, Cubs, Padres, and Rockies to be other options. Something will probably get done soon after the Winter Meetings. It will allow the Twins to find out who is interested, and then talk with those teams in the weeks following.

UPDATE: The Twins are entertaining the idea of signing either Kenny Lofton or Corey Patterson to play center. I think Patterson would be a great option. Not only does he have speed, but he is a pretty decent fielder with the potential to have a good bat.

Royals Move To Plan B

The Royals missing out on Hunter is not necessarily a bad thing right now. They can spend about seventy million, and plan to go hard for power hitting outfielder Jose Guillen. Guillen batted .290 this season with 23 HR and 99 RBI in 153 games. He is just thirty-one, and will probably command a three year deal, worth 30-40 million dollars. In 22 games at Kauffman Stadium, Guillen has batted .367 with 2 HR and 18 RBI. Those numbers would look pretty good after 81 games. His price is expected to go up though because he is also getting pursued by the Giants, Cubs, Rangers, and Mets. If they can sign him for a under 40 million, it gives them the option to also go after a pitcher, maybe Carlos Silva. They are looking into Hiroki Kuroda, but he prefers to stay on the West Coast. Silva has pitched in the AL Central his whole career, so switching to the Twins might be something he is interested in, but only if they get a power hitter as well. They have a chance to be a solid team in that division, and will probably influence who makes it to the playoffs next season. Silva is 3-1 with a 3.75 ERA in 6 games at Kauffman Stadium giving up five homeruns. Personally, I think Silva is better off going to the NL, but he will probably go to the highest bidder. The Braves, Mets, Mariners, Phillies, and Cardinals are all interested in Silva and willing to overpay to land the best pitcher left on the market.

White Sox Make Push For Jones?

Thursday, November 22, 2007

According to MLB Rumors Correspondent Shane Shapiro, the White Sox are making a big push for Andruw Jones. Although they have interest in Aaron Rowand, they prefer Jones because he is an excellent fielder and is slightly less reckless than Rowand. The White Sox had an offer ready for Torii Hunter, but since he signed with the Angels, I believe they will offer that same deal to Jones. Also, he has heard the Dodgers, Giants, Padres, and Athletics are also interested in Jones, who is seeking a multi-year deal. Jones batted .222 with 26 HR and 94 RBI, but did win a Gold Glove and put up similar power numbers to Rowand and Hunter. He is represented by Boras, so you can expect lengthy discussions and a deal probably reaching 100 million. Personally, I see the Dodgers leading the race because not only are they looking for an outfielder, but they have money to land him. Also, Jones is very good friends with former teammate and Dodger shortstop Rafael Furcal.

Park Returns to Korea:
Shane Shapiro is also reporting that Chan Ho Park will void his contract that he recently signed with the Dodgers and return

Rockies Closing In On Two Deals

The Rockies are very close to resigning free agent reliever Matt Herges and catcher Yorvit Torrealba. Herges, arguably the most important reliever for the Rockies in September, went 5-1 with a 2.96 ERA in 35 games. "We are close, that is fair to say," said Herges' agent Danny Horwits. "But we aren't done yet. There are still other teams involved." Torrealba earns a three year deal after his performance this season. All his offensive numbers were not great, his ability to call games did not go unnoticed. It seems Kaz Matsui is on his way, probably to the Astros or Cubs. Both have offered more money and have talked with Matsui more than the Rockies. These three contracts should be finalized next week.

Johan Santana to be traded?: After the Twins made a five year, 93 million dollar offer to Johan Santana, he countered for 126 million dollars. I'm sure this means that the Twins will trade him, probably during the Winter Meetings. Where he is going, who knows? I'm sure half the league is interested. The Red Sox, Yankees, Cardinals, Mets, Dodgers, and maybe even Angels seem to be most interested, among other teams.

White Sox Improve Bullpen

The White Sox are closing in on a four year deal, worth 19 million dollars with relief pitcher Scott Linebrink. Linebrink was lights out this season for the Padres and Brewers and plans to be a key part of their bullpen plans for 2008 and beyond. Linebink, who was 5-6 with a 3.71 ERA with 50 K, is set to take a physical next week. At first, I thought this deal was a little much. But he is only making 4.5 annually, not much more than Bob Howry, who signed this kind of deal two years ago. Also, he has been very consistent over the past five years which is why the Williams signed him. The White Sox had one of the worst bullpens in baseball last year, and by adding Linebrink, they have made it a lot better.

BREAKING NEWS: Angels Sign Hunter

I did not see this coming. Late Wednesday night, the Angels agreed to a five year deal, worth about 90 million dollars. "We shocked the world. Now I'm an Angel. I'm going to hopefully finish my career as a Halo, and hopefully get about three [World Series] rings out of this thing." This signing definitely puts the Angels ahead of the pack in the AL West, and it seems they will only get better. By signing Hunter, it makes sense that that they might give Brandon Wood a shot. They got the big bat they need, and have the option to go and get Miguel Cabrera still. Hunter, 32, won his seventh consecutive Gold Glove Award, batting .287 with 28 homers and 107 RBIs in 160 games. With this signing, they will probably move Garrett Anderson to DH, if not trade him. Corner outfielders are hard to find this offseason and Anderson would make for a good one year stopgap. He batted .297 with 16 HR and 80 RBI while making only two errors. While a deal is pending a physical, the White Sox, Royals, and Rangers were the most interested in signing Torii Hunter.

Whats Next for the Angels?: Well, new GM Tony Reagins has made the big splash that the Angels have been trying to make for years. Now, I expect them to go hard for Miguel Cabrera. Hunter gives them some protection so they can trade some prospects, and I see them looking at a deal like this. The Angels would trade Ervin Santana, Howie Kendrick, Chris Bootcheck, Sean O'Sullivan, and Jeff Mathis for Miguel Cabrera. You can then move Figgins to second, Cabrera at third and have arguably the best offense in the American League. That is a high price to pay for the Angels, but I think that would make them better than the 2002 team, when they won the World Series.

UPDATE: It is possible we could see Matthews added in the trade so they would not lose too many prospects, according to FOXSports.com.

Phillies Nearing Deal With Wolf

Wednesday, November 21, 2007

According to MLB Rumors Correspondent Tim Wallace, the Phillies are closing in on a one year deal with pitcher Randy Wolf. Wolf is arguably the most valuable free agent on the market. He leads all free agent starters with 8.24 strikeouts per nine innings and held pitchers to a .273 batting average. However, he has been injured a lot recently but is still capable of putting up wins. Wolf was 9-6 with a 4.73 ERA and 94 K in 18 games, and will probably get a one year deal worth about 6-8 million dollars. More details on this deal as it comes out.

Cubs prospect a bust?: It is probably too early to say the Cubs prospect Felix Pie is a bust, but he is batting .210 with 14 K's in 18 games in Winter Ball. Not impressive, especially after he worked for weeks with Cubs hitting coach Gerald Perry to cut his swing back. He did struggle with the major league team after dominating down in Triple-A which makes me think he is too good for Triple-A, but just not there yet for the MLB. I doubt the Cubs will give up on him yet, but I am sure they will give Ryan Theriot, Eric Patterson, and maybe give a veteran outfield a shot to ease Pie into the full time role. As for right field, I am all for Matt Murton, but only if they brought in a proven center fielder. They are really hoping they can bring in Kosuke Fukudome, maybe Milton Bradley, but no word on negotiations yet.

Royals Serious About Hunter

The Royals have put Torii Hunter at the top of their list this off season and are willing to wait for a decision. However, the White Sox and Rangers are pressing for one so he might be pressured to pick one sooner than he wants. It is probably hard to lure a big time free agent like Hunter to Kansas City, but they still have hope. “I can’t comment on any specific situation,” Royals general manager Dayton Moore said, “but we’re willing to look into any situation that makes our club better.” Hunter is likely to get a five year deal, worth about 85-90 million dollars, and I think he would commit to a team that offered six, which no team has yet to do. Hunter batted .287 with 28 HR, 107 RBI, and 18 SB, and is expected to make a decision sometime next week.

Mariners Front Runners For Kuroda

Tuesday, November 20, 2007

According to MLB Rumors Correspondent Shane Shapiro, the Mariners are the front-runners in the race to land Japanese pitcher Hiroki Kuroda. Kuroda, who is 103-89 with a 3.69 ERA in eleven seasons in Japan, is also being pursued by the Cubs, Rangers, and Red Sox, among others. However, Shapiro has learned that negotiations are starting to get serious, and that the Mariners are preparing to go to Tokyo to meet with Kuroda himself. The Mariners are desperate for pitching after flopping with Jeff Weaver. I have learned that they are in the running for Carlos Silva, and are looking into a trade that would bring Vicente Padilla to the Mariners. Kuroda would be great in the three or four spot. He would have catcher Kenji Johjima to work with, which would help while crossing the language barrier, along with veteran All Star Ichiro. I don't expect anything to get done until the Winter Meetings, only because of the holiday and because I am sure they will guage other teams interest. But for now, the Mariners are definitely leading the pact.

Report: Red Sox Make Offer To Timlin

According to MLB Rumors Correspondent Steve Wilson, the Red Sox have offered Mike Timlin a one year deal to pitch in the bullpen again. He will probably get a one year deal around 3-4 million dollars, he deserves it. He has been nothing but consistent for the Red Sox and his whole career and was solid in the bullpen for the Red Sox in the playoffs. This past season, he was 2-1 with a 3.42 ERA and 31 K and was drawing interest from the Phillies, Giants, Reds, and Astros. More on this deal as it comes out.

Mets Acquire Estrada

The Mets acquired Johnny Estrada in exchange for Guillermo Mota, which would suggest that the Brewers are close to signing Jason Kendall. The Mets definitely win in this trade. "Johnny adds depth to our catching situation," said Mets General Manager Omar Minaya. "He's a former All-Star who switch-hits and has hit over .300 three times in his career." Estrada and Castro will combine for solid duo behind the plate, especially if Estrada can continue to put up good numbers. I suspect now that Paul Lo Duca will head to the Marlins while the Blue Jays, Giants, and Rockies will look into signing Michael Barrett or Yorvit Torrealba.

If you check my article from yesterday, it says that the Mets are probably the front runner if Estrada is available. Well obviously people with Mets agreed and this trade should go a long way for the Mets.

Podsednik To Padres, Cubs?

Scott Podsednik was designated for assignment today and because he has enough major league time, he can declare for free agency if claimed. He will probably be non-tendered next month anyways but expect the Padres and Cubs to be interested. The Cubs were interested in him last season but couldn't work something out. It does not seem that Mike Cameron is going back to the Padres and they could look to bring Podsednik in and platoon him with someone else. The Cubs have shown interest in Cameron so they might go after him if the price is right. Podsednik struggled with the White Sox this season batting .243 with 2 HR, 11 RBI, and 12 SB, but has had some success in the past. Other than the Padres and Cubs, I expect the Rockies, Pirates, Orioles, and Nationals.

Angels Concede Cabrera, After Tejada

It appears the Angels have given up on acquiring Miguel Cabrera and are now focused on Miguel Tejada. Sources are saying talks have not gotten to specifics, but it makes sense that they would turn to Tejada. But where does Brandon Wood fit in? Or Chone Figgins? It is possible they would play Wood at short, Figgins at third, and play Tejada at DH. That would keep the team together and give Wood a spot to shine. The Angels nearly acquired Tejada from the Orioles back in 2006 for Ervin Santana and Erik Aybar, but that deal fell through. The Orioles hope they can trade Tejada before the end of the off season and this seems like a perfect fit. The Orioles could get Ervin Santana, Howie Kendrick, Chris Bootcheck, and maybe Sean O'Sullivan and shed some cash to spend elsewhere while the Angels get the big bat they need. "We're dealing from a position of strength, and we're confident that we'll be able to get the bat that we're looking for," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said from his California home last night. I expect something to get done around the Winter Meetings in two weeks.

UPDATE: According to MLB Rumors Corresponent Tim Wallace, the Orioles have opened talks with shortstop Cesar Izturis suggesting that they are in talks with the Angels.

Dodgers Close To Landing Cabrera

The Dodgers are very close to landing Miguel Cabrera, according to major league sources. It is believed that the deal includes Matt Kemp, Andy LaRoche, and pitcher Clayton Kershaw. However, the two sides are apart on one part of the deal, and I think it is over money. It is possible the Dodgers want cash if they are parting with three top prospects, and that seems reasonable. The Angels are also in negotiations with the Marlins, but no players have been named. If the Dodgers trade Kemp, they will probably look to sign Hunter or Rowand. They are also showing interest in Tadahito Iguchi, but only if Jeff Kent does not come back. More details on this scenario as more unfolds.

White Sox Close In On Hunter

Monday, November 19, 2007

The White Sox and Torii Hunter are closing in on a deal that could be finished by the end of the week. Hunter has met with the White Sox at least twice in the last two weeks, and it is believed the second time was to go over financial details of a possible detail. One source said that "the climate" was that a deal could get done very soon. According to MLB Rumors Correspondent Brady Yu, Torii Hunter is eager to get a deal done before Thanksgiving and plans to get something done today or tomorrow. By adding Cabrera and Hunter, they will have improved their offense and defense, and will give the White Sox the rest of the time to improve pitching. There has been no indication how much Hunter is set to make, but I would assume that it is at least a five year deal making 13-16 million dollars annually.

Brewers, Kendall Close: The Brewers are working on a deal with Jason Kendall, according to sources. The plan is to get a deal done by the end of the week in order to start shopping Johnny Estrada, maybe to the Mets or Pirates. It is possible to see Ronny Paulino brought in to platoon with Kendall, but a deal with the Mets seems more likely.

Mets Looking For Right Fielder

According to Steve Popper of The Record, Omar Minaya is in the market for a right fielder. I do not think he is looking to make a big splash but it would not surprise me if they inquire about Kosuke Fukudome. They will probably settle for Jose Guillen, or maybe Geoff Jenkins. I could also seem them look at Rondell White, but only if all else fails. However, Minaya knows the value of prospects these days and may shop them around for a proven outfielder or pitcher. It is likely that we will see Lastings Milledge go to Oakland for Joe Blanton while they will shop Phil Humber for an outfielder, maybe Alex Rios or Jason Bay. Personally, I think they should address the pitching situation first, but Minaya is desperate to make a winning team any way he can.

According to MLB Rumors Correspondent Brady Yu, the Pirates are now out of the running for reliever Yashiko Yabuta, leaving the White Sox, Royals, Indians, and Devil Rays in contention. However, now that the White Sox and Torii Hunter are moving closer to striking a deal, my money is on the Royals landing him. Trey Hillman is familiar with his stuff and I think he feels that he will prosper most there because Hillman will know where to use him.

Kaz Matsui To Astros?

Now that Luis Castillo is off the market and the Cubs are being blocked to make moves by the sale of the team, it appears that Kaz Matsui is heading to the Astros. According to Tracy Ringolsby of the Rocky Mountain News, the Astros are in negotiations with Matsui's representatives and you can expect something to get done next week. Meanwhile, the Rockies are happy with the way Jayson Nix has been performing and plan to give him a shot at second base. However, if the Astros bring in Matsui, we could see the Astros look to trade Chris Burke, who the Rockies were interested in last year. He is a good utility player who can play some infield and outfield. But if they cannot work a trade for Burke, they might look to sign Tadahito Iguchi. They have had success with Japanese players and Iguchi would probably have success in Colorado, where the air is thinner. In other news, the Rockies are far apart in talks with Torrealba, and it is still possible that he will go to the Marlins, Brewers, or Blue Jays. The Rockies are interested in Michael Barrett, who is looking for about five million dollars annually. I expect talks to really heat up after the holiday so stay tuned.

Report: Yankees Near Deal With Mahay

The Yankees and relief pitcher Ron Mahay are closing in on a two year deal worth about five to seven million dollars, according to one AL executive. Mahay, 36, dominated lefties and holding them to a .189 average. He will give the Yankees a lefty specialist in the bullpen who can set up for closer Mariano Rivera. He also gives them an option if Rivera starts to struggle. Mahay was 3-0 with a 2.55 ERA and 55 K and has been pretty consistent in keeping his ERA down throughout his ten year career. Despite struggling with the Cubs in 2002, he is 19-10 with a 3.87 ERA in 359 games. He has experience in the American League playing his first two seasons with the Red Sox. Although he is getting older, it only makes their pitching better by adding a lefty specialist, who is even more confident than he was after putting up solid numbers. If a deal is not reached in the next two days, expect it to be shelved until next week because of the holiday's.

Nationals After Dukes, Again

The Washington Nationals are actively pursuing troubled Devil Rays prospect Elijah Dukes. Dukes has been the topic of many trades because he would bring back something in return, and his off the field scuffles are upsetting the team and the Front Office. Dukes would fit nice in Washington. He would be able to step into a leading role with the team and benefit from Manny Acta's style of play. Not only that, but he is playing in the Dominican Republic with Nats third base coach Tim Tolman, and is being scouted by Nats manager Manny Acta. Furthermore, Jim Bowden is known for giving troubled stars another shot. He signed Dmitri Young and Ronnie Belliard, both who had trouble in the off season or the season before. Dmitri Young was released by the Tigers because he was struggling and had some attitude problems while Belliard had some off the field problems. Bringing in Dukes would help the team and could revitalized his troubled start in the MLB. It would also clear his off the field image and a change of scenery, although it is not to a contender, would allow him to start fresh and grow into the ball player he is capable of becoming in a low media environment.

Angels Acquire Garland

The Angels traded shortstop Orlando Cabrera to the White Sox for pitcher Jon Garland. Garland, who has been shopped around for nearly three seasons, will be a solid pitcher in the two spot while Cabrera will be an upgrade in the middle infield and probably end Danny Richar's time at second base. Cabrera is in the final year of his contract making 9 million while Garland is making 12 million dollars. This means you can expect to see John Danks and Gavin Floyd in the rotation for the White Sox in 2008. I think this is a great move for the Angels who now have room for Brandon Wood and add Garland, who should benefit from the dimensions on Angel Stadium.

Torii and Torre In Dodger Blue?

Now that Joe Torre is with the Dodgers, more players are interested in playing for him. Sports. "With Joe Torre there, things have got to change. He's bringing his history with them. I'm telling you, they're going to start winning." Hunter hit .287 with 28 HR and 107 RBI and could take over in center and have Juan Pierre move to left field. Hunter will probably take a five year deal, worth about 16-18 million dollars annually.

Athletics Trade Scutaro

Sunday, November 18, 2007

The Athletics traded Marco Scutaro to the Blue Jays for Graham Godfrey and Kristian Bell. The Athletics are shedding some cash with this trade and are acquiring a pair of relievers as they try to rebuild their bullpen. Godfrey was 6-7 with a 3.98 ERA and 74 K, and is just 23 while Bell was 3-7 with a 5.33 ERA and 46 K in High-A. He is also just 23 but does not show as much promise as Godfrey. Scutaro is very versatile and will definitely help the Blue Jays while GM Billy Beane hopes these relievers, who were probably hand picked by him, can help improve the bullpen.

Twins Make Offer To Santana

The Twins have reportedly made an offer to Johan Santana for five years, worth 93 million dollars. That is 18.6 million dollars annually, more than Barry Zito and Carlos Zambrano, but he is 29, and probably deserves slightly bit more. Although he was 15-13 with a 3.33 ERA, he is 93-44 with a 3.22 ERA in eight years with the Twins, with two Cy Young's. He would probably get 20 million on the market for six or seven years, and is probably interested in going to a winning team, like the Red Sox. I think the Twins will trade him if he does not accept this offer because they are known for not countering in negotiations. The Dodgers, Red Sox, and Yankees seem to be the most intriguing, because they have so many prospects. But I would not rule out the Cardinals, who could offer Rick Ankiel, Adam Ottavino, Colby Rasmus, and maybe another prospect. I don't think the Cardinals plan on giving up Rasmus for a one year rental, especially because someone like Jon Garland is available. Another possibility is if they do not trade him now, and do not trade him at the deadline, they could just offer him arbitration and then wait to receive draft picks from whoever signs him. Bill Smith is new to being a General Manager, but has experience in the front office so I think he has a plan with Santana.

Red Sox Interested In Wood

The Red Sox have expressed interested in free agent reliever Kerry Wood, according to Boston.com. The Cubs and Kerry Wood have not shown any signs of moving forward in negotiations and it could signal the end in Chicago for him. However, Wood has always been loyal to the Cubs and will probably let the Cubs make an offer, and counter if Wood does not like it. Wood has been injured on and off over the past couple of years but might have found a safe spot in the bullpen. Wood was 1-1 with a 3.33 ERA and 24 K, and is drawing interest from the Rangers, Reds, and Yankees. If the Red Sox do sign him, they would put him in the spot that was envisioned for Eric Gagne. The Reds might come up if the Cubs can't sign him because of his close relationship with Dusty Baker and now pitching coach Dick Pole. Personally, I think the Cubs and him will work something out.

Third Base Options For Dodgers

The Dodgers are exploring the market for a third baseman, but are having some problems. Here is a list of five players they should consider:

1. Miguel Cabrera, Marlins
The Marlins are very interested in trading with the Dodgers because they have so many prospects, but the Dodgers do not feel it is worth it. Maybe if the Marlins take a step back in their asking price, they would continue, but it seems he might end up staying in Miami.

2. Mike Lowell, Red Sox
They have joined the race for Mike Lowell but seem to be a long shot. Lowell has played his whole career on the East Coast and does not plan to move. He has won two World Series, and is smart enough to know that a move to the West Coast, where pitching is better and stadiums tend to favor pitchers, would only hurt his numbers.

3. Hank Blalock, Rangers
Blalock only played in 59 games but showed good power. He would be a good option in LA because he would not cost as much, maybe a prospect or two. He will be 27 on the 21st, and is pretty versatile around the infield. He was born in San Diego, and returning to the West Coast might be something he prefers.

4. Chone Figgins, Angels
If the Angels are serious about Miguel Cabrera, it makes Chone Figgins expendable, unless they want to play him at second. However, they have been looking to trade Figgins for awhile now and might be able to land some solid prospects now that he is coming off a good year. But, if they trade Kendrick I think they will stick with Figgins at second.

5. Edwin Encarnacion, Reds
Encarnacion had a slight attitude problem back in April, but turned it around and put out a pretty good year. It would cost them prospects because the Reds are known for having a pretty steep asking price, but if they really want someone ready, that is what it takes.

Honorable Mention: Joe Crede and Melvin Mora.

What all makes sense: With Joe Torre as manager, he should try and give the job to Andy LaRoche and platoon him Nomar Garciaparra, or another veteran third baseman. LaRoche has been tearing up the ball in Fall Ball, and only got his feet wet last year.

Cubs Looking For Lefties, Speed

The Cubs have joined the race for second baseman Luis Castillo. Castillo, who hit .301 with 1 HR, 38 RBI, and 19 SB, played for the Marlins back in 2003, the year they beat the Cubs in seven games. Nevertheless, Castillo would give them a solid lead off man who is a good fielder with great speed. The question always comes up though, is there room? You could say yes, but the Cubs would be putting Lou Piniella in a situation with too many starters. It would force him to start DeRosa in right field more often, cut back on Ryan Theriot's playing time some, and maybe even take some at bats away from Derek Lee. Yet, Lou Piniella went with over 90 different lineups last season, so I think it can be done. The Astros are also looking at Castillo along with the Mets, but only if Davd Eckstein does not want to play second base. With Matsui, I think the Cubs were looking to bring him in to try and lure Fukudome, but his price may have gotten too steep. They still plan to go after Fukudome, but hope to lure him in by exposing their solid offense, beautiful stadium, and city to him. Adding Fukudome would give them an experienced bat at the bottom part of their order, who probably won't have as much power as he has in Japan. The Rangers, Mets, Yankees, Padres are considering a run at him, along with many other teams. According to sources inside the Cubs, there has been some interest in Milton Bradley, but only if Fukudome is not with the Cubs.

UPDATE: The Mets are on the verge of signing Luis Castillo to a four year deal worth 25 million dollars. Although he can help the top of your order, his leg problems have become a problem will be more significant as he gets older.

Broussard Likely Heading To Texas

The Rangers and Mariners talked about a trade that would send Ben Broussard to the Rangers. However, there was growing speculation among members of the Rangers that the Mariners will non-tender Broussard, making him a free agent. If this happens, you can expect the Rangers to jump in on negotiations. The Rangers are in need of a first baseman and could platoon Broussard at first with Catalanotto if he struggles. He did hit .275 with 7 HR in 99 games last season, but has shown decent power when able to play everyday. Another option would be Richie Sexson, but only if the Mariners would take Vicente Padilla. It would simply be bad contract for bad contract hoping the players could turn out to have good years. Then that would put Sexson at first and Saltalamacchia back at catcher. We will know more in December when the Mariners determine the future of Broussard.

Twins Interetsed in Tony Clark?

The Twins have joined the race for veteran switch-hitter Tony Clark. Clark, 35, hit .249 with 17 HR and 51 RBI last season with Arizona, and according to GM Josh Byrnes, Clark was a big part of the Diamondbacks run to the postseason. Clark is looking for an everyday job, and will probably leave for a DH spot. According to MLB Rumors Correspondent Steve Wilson, the Athletics, Rangers, Royals, and Twins are all interested in Clark, but are looking at a one year deal with an option. That seems fair because Clark saw a drop off in numbers from last season and should be willing to take that to prove himself. However, his power does fit the Metrodome and his attitude would be great for the clubhouse. Other than Clark, it is believed that they are interested in Sammy Sosa, but only if his price comes way down.

The man who established himself as The Super Agent, Scott Boras is now on a slight decline. Today, Kenny Rogers dropped his agent Scott Boras and said he would represent himself in negotiations. Although he loses just one client, who is nearing retirement, this could signal the beginning of players choosing other agents instead of Boras, who although will land you a big contract, will draw negative attention to your negotiations. Now that he is on his own, it makes even more sense that he will return to Detroit. However, both the Rangers and Mariners have made contact with him, but all offers made were declined by Boras. Now that he is on his own, I expect him to get a deal done with the Tigers probably the week following Thanksgiving.

Friday Grumblings

Rowand Taking Over In Center For Dodgers?: Free agent outfielder Aaron Rowand is drawing a lot of interest from teams around the league, and his new contract is expected to be big. Although he is asking for fifteen million, one MLB executive tells me he expects the deal to top 90 million dollars. There are several teams interested in Rowand that could take on that kind of contract. The Dodgers, White Sox, Rangers, Cubs, and Astros have all made contact with Rowand, but it appears the Dodgers have the inside track because of Rowand's connections to Southern California.

Tigers Interested In Hernandez: The Tigers are expressing interest in Livan Hernandez. According to MLB Rumors Correspondent Tim Wallace, Livan prefers to play in New York with his half-brother Orlando, but is willing to listen to offers. Look for the Cardinals to inquire about Hernandez before his price goes up.

Brewers Eye Kendall?: The Brewers are interested in Kendall. Not a surprise here. Kendall is known for working with young pitchers well and his experience in the NL Central would make a change much easier.

Yankees Sign Molina, Braves Trade Villarreal: The Yankees signed Jose Molina to back up Posada to a two year contract, worth four million dollars. Not much to say here except it gives Joe Girardi a solid backup behind Posada. Also, the Braves traded Oscar Villarreal to the Astros for Josh Anderson. Anderson, 25, batted .358 with 0 HR and 11 RBI. He is very fast, and gives the Braves another option in center.

Royals Close to Deal with Yasuhiko Yabuta: According to MLB Rumors Correspondent Steve Wilson, the Royals are nearing a deal with Japanese pitcher Yasuhiko Yabuta. He was 4-6 last season with a 2.73 ERA and four saves in 58 games. This probably won't be the last pitcher the Royals sign from Japan. Trey Hillman has first hand knowledge of these guys and will be able to coach them better than some coaches.

UPDATE: Ken Rosenthal has confirmed the report and said it is a two year deal with an option for a third.

Marlins After Barrett, Lo Duca to Rockies?: The Marlins have turned their attention to signing Michael Barrett. If you look at my article back in September, it says that the Marlins might look at him if they have some cash open. However, the Marlins could sign Barrett to a deal similar to Torrealba, and work his annually salary into their budget. A catcher will not come cheap now that the Mets over payed for Torrealba, so they will need to open their wallet. The Rockies have begun talks with Paul Lo Duca, but talks have not gotten far.

Diamondbacks Exploring Market

Although they said they wouldn't, the Diamondbacks are exploring the market hoping to find a cheap pitcher to fill the void. The names that come up are Matt Clement and Bartolo Colon, both of whom have been stricken by injury over the past couple of seasons. However, the interest in Matt Clement seems more realistic because he is looking at a one year deal, worth about 2 million dollars. He has been pitching successfully with no pain over the past two months and plans to be ready for Spring Training. One reason why the Diamondbacks might be turned off to this idea is because they already have Randy Johnson, who is coming off back surgery. The Diamondbacks appear to be giving up on Tony Clark, who has become very stubborn in contract negotiations, according to sources. They have talked with Mark Sweeney's agent, who also represents Matt Clement. Sweeney would not be a bad bench replacement. He is a solid pinch hitter with experience at Chase Field.

Mets Need Second Baseman, Pitching

The Mets are on the verge of completing a three year deal worth 14 million dollars with Yorvit Torrealba. I think the main reason he is being brought in is because of his defense, and impressive ability to call games. He will probably be slotted in the eighth spot because he hit .212 away from Coors Field, and because he is not showing any signs of breaking out. With this signing, it becomes even more important that they sign Luis Castillo, who hit .301 with 1 HR, 38 RBI, and 19 SB with the Mets and Twins last season. He is 32, but is not showing any signs of slowing down. A lot of teams are showing interest, so he might fly out of the Mets' price range. Second base is not a hard position to fill, but it might be, depending on who they ask for. I assume they will offer up a young pitcher or two for Orlando Hudson. They are hungry for pitching and with Livan Hernandez leaving, and they will do anything to bring more in. Other possibilities include Tony Abreu, Jeff Keppinger, Brendan Harris, Josh Barfield, and possibly Cubs prospect Eric Patterson. They do not want to aim too high with a second baseman though. That is because they plan to be in the running for one of the top pitchers that hit the market, specifically Joe Blanton or Dan Haren. They would have to give up one of their top prospects to acquire one, perhaps Phil Humber or Lastings Milledge. Finally, according to MLB Rumors Correspondent Steve Wilson, the Mets have contacted the agent of Octavio Dotel in hopes of striking a deal by the Winter Meetings. The Mets would also be smart to look into free agent pitchers Ron Mahay, Kerry Wood, and Jeremy Affeldt.

UPDATE: The Mets have opened up talks with both David Eckstein and Tadahito Iguchi. Iguchi seems like a possibility because he is looking to play second base. Eckstein, on the other hand, prefers to play shortstop.

BREAKING NEWS: Bonds Indicted

Thursday, November 15, 2007

Former Giants Outfielder and Homerun King Barry Bonds has been charged with perjury and obstruction of justice, according to CNN.com. "During the criminal investigation, evidence was obtained including positive tests for the presence of anabolic steroids and other performance enhancing substances for Bonds and other athletes," the indictment read. The grand jury has been working vigorously for the past several months to complete this indictment, and I'm sure this will draw more interest than the Mitchell Report. The indictment charged Bonds with lying when he said he didn't knowingly take steroids given to him by his trainer. It is always innocent until proven guilty, and although some disagree, that is my stand on the whole thing.

Update: Torrealba Nearing Deal With Mets

The Mets are nearing a deal with Yorvit Torrealba, according to his agent Melvin Roman. Contrary to reports from ESPN, the deal is not completely done yet, but should be done in the next couple of days, if not earlier. It is believed to be in final stages as they work on the language of the deal.

Rivera Wants A Fourth Year

The main reason the Yankees have yet to announce the Mariano Rivera signing is because Rivera is holding out for a fourth year. To me, that is ridiculous. Although he put up a good year going 3-4 with a 3.15 ERA and 30 SV, it was his highest ERA since 1995, his rookie season, and the most hits given up since 1996. He is still a solid fielder, but the numbers he is asking for and what it comes out to makes me think the Yankees were pressured to do the right thing with Rivera:

I averaged out the last 11 seasons and came up with the following:

  • He has pitched 778 innings, averaging 70.7 innings per season.
  • He has pitched in 707 games, averaging 64.3 appearances per season.
  • He has averaged recording 212.1 outs per season.

Using those averages as expectations for the 2008 season, Rivera will be paid:

  • $233,281 for every game he appears in.
  • $212,164 for every inning he pitches.
  • $70,721 for every out that is recorded when he is in a game.
(Thanks to FOXSPORTS.com)

I think Rivera still has one, maybe two good years left in him, but to pay him that much for three years will only hurt them. They have solid young relievers who could take the closer spot next year. What the Yankees should do is hold strong on their offer, maybe offer a mutual option, and see what he does. It would not surprise me if ends up taking the three year offer when he sees that no team is interested in giving him a four year deal.

Matt Kemp To Orioles?

The Dodgers have one of the most stocked farm systems in baseball and are expected to be big players in the races for Dan Haren and Erik Bedard. The Orioles seem to be the most interesting team because they are in need of a change, and could use some fresh faces to reestablish themselves in the AL East. I'm sure they will look to sign Bedard before they shop him, but if they could land Matt Kemp, Clayton Kershaw, and Chin-Lung Hu, three major league ready players, you would think they would do something like that. Especially because they will get more prospects from whichever team bites on Miguel Tejada. Kemp is being pursued by a lot of teams since the Dodgers put him on the market including the Padres, Twins, and Marlins. Don't expect anything to happen in the next week or so. The Orioles do plan to try and sign Bedard before shopping him, so I do not expect anything to get serious until mid-December.

Jones Back In Atlanta?

The Atlanta Braves have taken the first steps in moving closer to signing Tom Glavine, and according to Tim Tucker, they have more money to spend. Could this mean that they will re-open talks with longtime Brave Andruw Jones? His agent, Scott Boras, really hurt his reputation as an agent with Alex Rodriguez which will probably hurt the rest of his clients talks. Also, with Jones coming off a bad year the Braves would be able to get him at a reduced price. This past season, Jones, 30 hit .222 with 26 HR and 94 RBI, numbers that will probably get him a five year deal worth 80-85 million dollars. However, the Braves think very high of Jordon Shafer and Brent Lillibridge, which would suggest that they will put their money towards better things. I'm sure Jones' price will go up now that Alex Rodriguez is going back to the Yankees, only because teams are now more desperate. Personally, I consider the Giants the front runner because they are so desperate for an offensive upgrade, but do not rule out the Dodgers, Padres, and maybe Angels.

Report: Yankees, A-Rod Reach Agreement

Wednesday, November 14, 2007

According to Peter Abraham of the Journal News, the Yankees and Alex Rodriguez have all but finalized a 10 year deal, worth 275 million dollars. Certainly a good deal for A-Rod, who not only saves face but gets a fresh new deal that he worked out on his own. I have heard different numbers, but we know that the numbers range from 22 million to 27 million annually. It wouldn't surprise me if he took a pay cut out of respect because he caused the Yankees to lose 21 million dollars from the Rangers because he opted out. For now, it is a preliminary agreement as they still work on the numbers, but A-Rod will be a Yankee for a very long time To be honest, my free agent predictions initially had A-Rod staying with the Yankees, but I changed them. I should have stuck with my gut, right? Now the Yankees need to sign Mariano Rivera, trade Johnny Damon, and work on bringing back Andy Pettitte. The Yankees are looking pretty good if their younger guys can stay healthy, and hopefully Joe Girardi can control the Yankees, who will be on a tight leash early on.

Lowell Still Coming?: It appears that Mike Lowell is on his way out of Boston. According to sources out of Boston, he has received four year offers from Boston, St. Louis, Anaheim, and the Yankees. It sounds ridiculous, but the Yankees have an opening at first base and could bring in Lowell, who would make the Yankees a lot better. He could play first base, which might extend his career some, and it would hit the Red Sox hard, who would then have to either trade for something, or settle for something much less the Lowell. I'm sure a deal would be a four year deal, worth about 60 million to get him to come to New York and play first base.

Mets Near Deal With Torrealba

The Mets are closing in on a multi-year deal with Mets, according to several sources. Although it has not been confirmed, I have heard that the Rockies have dropped out of the running and are setting their sights on free agent Michael Barrett. The deal is believed to be a two year deal, worth 10-12 million dollars, with a possible option for a third year. At first, the club seemed content with bringing Lo Duca back. But since Torrealba expressed his interest in the market, the Mets quickly signed his backup Ramon Castro, and are moving towards a deal for him. You could say that Castro did better than Torrealba, despite not playing everyday. Torrealba batted .255 with 8 HR and 47 RBI while Castro batted .285 with 11 HR and 31 RBI in 52 games. The Mets probably see the value in Castro off the bench because he is a good situational hitter, and is good at holding runners. And Torrealba has a full season under his belt with playoff success, so it is hard not to give the job to start. I think this is a great 1-2 punch for the Mets, who is are just getting started in upgrading their team. So with Torrealba leaving, I expect the Rockies to go after Michael Barrett, and their seems to be genuine interest. As for Lo Duca, he will find work. Probably with the Padres or Marlins, most likely with the Marlins. The catchers will probably go rather early as Torrealba sets the price for others, but we will see how it all plays out.

Astros Interested In Wolf?

The Houston Astros have named three targets: Luis Castillo, Scott Linebrink, and Randy Wolf. We have known about their interest in Linebrink and Castillo but Wolf is something new. Wolf was not bad this year for the Dodgers, but had a season ending injury which shut him down in July. However, he went 9-6 with a 4.73 ERA and 94 K in 18 games. If he had a full season, he probably would have put up thirteen to fifteen wins. The Astros are smart to be interested despite recent struggles from their veteran pitchers. Wolf will probably want a guaranteed contract, for about 5 or 6 million dollars. I think it is a good move for the Astros. They get a veteran pitcher who could give them 10+ wins. As for Linebrink and Castillo, both of them would make the team better and maybe put them in contention for a spot in the playoffs, assuming some of their young pitchers can bounce back. Other than the Astros, the Phillies and Twins are also interested.

Padres Exploring Market

The Padres have said that they expect both Milton Bradley and Geoff Blum leave, which could indicate that they will pick up negotiations with outfielder Mike Cameron. Cameron is the obvious choice in center, and they will probably go with Hairston-Headley in left. I wouldn't rule out Kosuke Fukudome though. They nearly signed him out of high school and GM Kevin Towers has not denied his interest. As for Bradley, it is possible to see him go to the Cubs if they miss out of Fukudome. They nearly acquired him before he left the Athletics, and Bradley could play right field. The Cubs are looking for a left handed bat, and Bradley is a switch hitter who hit .307 batting lefty. Aside from that, the Padres are exploring a trade for Matt Kemp, along with some other possibilities. I think if they could should add a free agent bat solely because a platoon at both left and second may effect the lineup, but an upgrade can always be added as the market unfolds. They are expected to go after Jason Kendall, who is seeking a one to two year deal.

UPDATE: According to MLB Rumors Correspondent Tim Wallace, the Padres are preparing an offer for Geoff Jenkins. So there you have it, they will look to a corner outfielder after all.

A-Rod Reaching Out to Yankees

It may not be over yet between A-Rod and the Yankees. Several of the major sports news outlets are reporting today that A-Rod is rethinking his decision to play elsewhere next year. He has initiated the talks and the Yankees appear receptive on two conditions: that A-Rod lower his demands stated by his agent, Scott Boras from $350 million by 50-75 million and that Boras not be present at any negotiating meetings. I'm not very surprised by this. I think a lot of teams were saying that he should lower his price and now he is going back to the team that might only pay him 28-30 million dollars. It wouldn't surprised me if the Yankees offered the same 10 year deal, worth 252 million dollars. Although no player is worth that, A-Rod did get it once and could probably take it again. I think the main reason A-Rod might be going back to the Yankees to talk a contract is to save face. Even if he doesn't sign, at least he gave them some respect. Rodriguez looks so bad in the public eye right now that he is hoping that the Yankees may be able to save his image as a true professional, at least somewhat. It appears that the Yankees do not want to trade away their young talent, and will just throw out more money. A-Rod, who will probably be the AL MVP, has drawn some interest from the Dodgers, Angels, and Giants.

Wild Things Outfielder Barry Bonds?

Tuesday, November 13, 2007

Now that teams can negotiate with players outside their organization, it comes as no surprise that Barry Bonds receives an offer. It is just not who you think it is from. Today the Washington Wild Things of the Frontier League offered Bonds a contract with a base salary, loaded with incentives. “He will have the opportunity to meet certain bonus levels based on breaking any Frontier League single-season offensive record,” explained GM Vecchio. Incentives include breaking the homerun record (35), RBI record (100), Base on Balls (85), and breaking the record of any other offensive category. This could turn out to be a very lucrative deal if Bonds can put up another good season, and it would give Bonds a chance to return to Pennsylvania, where his career began. His deal also gives him king-sized room on road trips, 50% of profits on sales of his gear, and a host family for Bonds if needed. Other than the Wild Things, I expect the Angels, Mariners, and Twins to be interested.

Braves Eyeing Pitchers Glavine, Silva

The Braves are eyeing pitchers now that they can negotiate with other players, and plan to meet with Tom Glavine tomorrow. This comes as no surprise and they should get a deal done in the next couple of weeks. I'm sure he will ask for a deal similar to Greg Maddux's, maybe a little higher. They have also talked with Carlos Silva initially, but may pass if his price rises too high. They were scouting him back in July, which makes me think they may offer him a contract. I expect the Mariners to jump in on Silva. They are desperate for pitching and will probably sign for a Gil Meche-type deal. The Braves do have Jair Jurrjens, so I do not expect them to go for Silva hard, but expect them to look into a center fielder. At first, I was thinking Mike Cameron. But because of his recent stimulant allegation he is probably returning to San Diego. I haven't talked with anyone from the Braves, but one NL GM said it wouldn't surprise him if they expressed interest in former Brave Kenny Lofton. He believes Lofton would give them the option of bringing one of their younger players up to be mentored by Lofton. It also gives them the option to trade him to a contender like he was this past season. Another option is utilty man Alexei Ramirez, who can play outfield and some infield. In the next couple weeks, we will find out where the Braves stand on some of the issues, and where new GM Frank Wren plans to take the team.

Marlins Finding Cheap Replacements

The Marlins are looking to improve their pitching and defense, and it starts with picking up veterans coming off poor years. Aaron Boone, who played some third base for the Marlins last season, batted .286 with 5 HR and 28 RBI in 69 games. He is coming off a knee injury, and would probably get a one year, incentive laden contract. Another player like that is pitcher Mike Maroth, who was 5-7 with a 6.89 ERA in 27 games with the Tigers and Cardinals. He really struggled in the National League which makes me think he might get a one year deal, with guaranteed money. He has talked with the Nationals, and will probably receive two million annually. I think it is smart to look for these type of veterans, but trading away all your studs would only put them a step back. Trading one would do the trick, not all three. Not really a cheap upgrade, but the Marlins are looking into bringing in either Michael Barrett, Yorvit Torrealba, or Paul Lo Duca. All three are drawing a lot of interest and their price will probably rise. All three are good options, and I'm sure they will land one. I think a lot starts with whether or not they can trade Miguel Cabrera. I'm sure they plan to trade Cabrera before they have to offer him arbitration, and also before the peak of the free agent signings so they can upgrade as well.

According to MLB Rumors Correspondent Thomas Reiss, the Marlins are also looking at Cliff Floyd, and have been in contact with his agent. I'm sure he would command a one year deal, worth 3-4 million dollars. That is a hefty price on the cheap Marlins, but if they can get Floyd to take a discount, he might be a good fit. He believes that the Twins have contacted Floyd about their DH spot, but it has not been confirmed yet.

Yankees Third Base Situation

A lot of people have been asking what is happening in New York and for now, all talks are premature. The Yankees are focused on getting something done with Mariano Rivera, and from what I have heard, they have made him a three year deal worth 45-47 million dollars. As for teams they have talked to, they have talked with the Orioles, Marlins, Dodgers, and White Sox, and I assume that they will look to Miguel Cabrera first. Cabrera will definitely cost them, probably Melky Cabrera and several other prospects. After Cabrera, 24, they will probably look to Miguel Tejada, who would have to make a switch to third. But by playing in the same division it should not be too hard. Joe Crede would not cost them too much because he is coming off an injury but I think they want someone bigger than him. One surprising option would be to bring in Nomar Garciaparra from the Dodgers and platoon him with Wilson Betemit. Although I think this is a bad move, they would only have him for one year and then they could let him walk and look to add someone like Troy Glaus.

The Red Sox failed to sign Mike Lowell before the deadline, allowing him to negotiate with other teams. The Yankees said they would look into signing him, but I'm sure his agents, who also represent Jorge Posada, will look to get the same deal they got for Posada, which might turn the Yankees off to the thirty-four year old. We will see what happens over the next couple weeks, but I expect them to see if Lowell is interested before exploring these trades.

Jays After Clemens?

The Toronto Blue Jays are seriously considering making a run for Roger Clemens, according to the Metro News Canada. Clemens, who pitched for the Blue Jays in 1997 and 1998, has said he would pitch if the right opportunity approached him, and I'm not sure the Blue Jays are that fit. Clemens fought off some leg problems this season and I think they would be taking a risk by bringing him in. Not only are they weak at the plate, but their bullpen was inconsistent at times, and they are playing in a division which is getting a lot better. He is slated to work with the Astros as a consultant and I think he would be wise to just call it a career. For now, it is just a rumor. I doubt that the Blue Jays would look to Clemens as a "must-sign," maybe as a fallback if all else fails.

Cubs trade another outfielder: The Cubs are making more room on their roster by trading Craig Monroe to the Twins for a minor league prospect. To me, this says the Twins are now behind Torii Hunter, but we will see what happens this week.

Breaking News: Yankees Sign Posada

Monday, November 12, 2007

The Yankees have agreed to a deal with Jorge Posada worth 52 million dollars over four years, according to FOXSPORTS.com. This is the same deal that was given to both Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui just two years ago. The deal is pending a physical which is scheduled to take place tomorrow in New York. This is a ridiculous offer I think, and now they are stuck with Posada till he is 40. You could call this a "fluke" year for Posada after hitting .338 with 20 HR. He has not hit above .285 since 2000, and is hovering around the twenty homerun mark as he gets older. Not only that, but I'm sure he will get some trade clause which prevents a trade. Even if he doesn't, who would want a 40 year old catcher making thirteen million dollars. Although I am a fan of Posada, I think this will come back to haunt the Yankees. All they are doing is adding another older player which is holding them back from a World Series.

Hot Stove: Mets, Cubs, Rockies, Mariners

This afternoon, I talked with a Special Assistant of the Mets and he gave me an idea of what the Mets will do this off season. First, let's clear the speculation: The Mets are not going after Alex Rodriguez. But they do have interest in some of Boras' clients. I was not told who, but if I had to speculate I would say Eric Gagne, simply because the Mets are looking for an upgrade in their bullpen. As for other free agents, they are nearing a deal with Paul Lo Duca, but there was no indication that the Mets were close to a deal with Luis Castillo. I assume a deal will be announced at the earliest tonight, but probably tomorrow morning. They also plan to explore the market for a starting pitcher, and I believe they are not ruling anyone out just yet. I think the Mets will look at free agent pitcher Livan Hernandez, who is clutch in the playoffs and can rake up innings. He is also the half brother of Mets pitcher Orlando Hernandez which plays into the chemistry factor, something most people overlook. Through trades, all I heard was that they have had talks with teams. As for which players, or what they are asking for, it is unclear. But I assume that they are shopping Mike Pelfrey and Carlos Gomez. The Mets payroll is right around 115 million dollars, but I expect it to go up because I see them looking at White Sox pitchers Jon Garland and Jose Contreras.

Kaz Matsui and Kosuke Fukudome Cubs Update: I have had a lot of questions about this one. The Cubs are supposedly interested in Kaz Matsui, but I have not been able to confirm that report. From what I have heard, the Cubs plan to offer a three year deal to Matsui and play him at second and short. However, they still plan to play Mark DeRosa five days a week at second, third and in the outfield. This means that Ryan Theriot's time might be cut some, but Piniella is known for working in his players into games. As for Fukudome, the Cubs are "very interested" and plan to make an aggressive offer to him. Personally, I think they will look to sign Matsui in the next day or so and use him to lure Fukudome. Beyond that, they will work to sign Kerry Wood while exploring the market for other free agents, possibly Francisco Cordero. I have heard there is some interest in Hitoki Iwase, but again, nothing has been confirmed just yet. Despite the pending ownership sale, the Cubs plan to be fairly active.

What will the Mariners do?:
The Mariners are in an interesting spot. They have made it known they plan to upgrade their pitching, and that is why I think might land Carlos Silva. They are looking into pitchers Jon Garland, Dan Haren, Dontrelle Willis, and Roy Oswalt, and will probably have to unload some of their top prospects to bring them in. As for other trades, they will probably look to trade Richie Sexson, maybe to the Rangers for Vicente Padilla to swap bad contracts.

What about the Rockies?: The Rockies are probably on the verge of losing both Matsui and Torrealba. They plan to talk with Michael Barrett this week, and may look in house for a second baseman. It is possible we could see Marcus Giles go to Colorado, or maybe Japanese infielder Tomohiro Nioka. As for a front of the line starter, they have been connected to the Athletics because of their solid farm system. They have several solid pitchers, who could land a pitcher like Dan Haren or Joe Blanton if packaged together. They have also been shopping around Brian Fuentes, but only to gauge his interest around the league.

If you would like an update on your team, just leave a comment and I will find out whatever I can.

Silva Will Go To Highest Bidder

According to MLB Rumors correspondent Brady Yu, Carlos Silva is done with the Twins. The Twins were not interested in going past 25 million dollars for three years, and stopped at a deal similar to what Jason Marquis got. Silva is looking for a four year deal worth 40 million dollars, and will probably get something close to that because the week free agent market makes him one of the best available. Silva was 13-14 this season with a 4.19 ERA, but has the potential to put up better numbers. I saw him pitch in Minnesota this season and he had solid downward movement on his pitches, and worked the count very nicely. I think he would be great for a team like the Phillies, but I do not see the Phillies looking to add someone for that much money. Right now, the Mariners seem desperate for pitching and might throw eleven million annually to bring him in. After them, I'm sure the Padres will jump in, along with the White Sox, Royals, and Braves, among others. Free agent signing starts tomorrow and I'm sure he will sign once the highest bidder establishes their interest.

Tigers Acquire Jacque Jones

The Tigers have traded Omar Infante to the Chicago Cubs for Jacque Jones and cash. "Our scouts really like him and how he fits because he's a left-handed hitter that can play all three spots in the outfield," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said in a telephone interview. "But I think it was a great trade for both teams because Infante can really help a National League team because he can play short, second, third and in the outfield." Jones gives the Tigers a left handed outfielder, while the Cubs get another versatile player. Jones has one year left on his contract and is probably giving Cameron Maybin an extra year to get ready. This was a great move for the Tigers, who acquire someone who played in the division for several years. He is probably comfortable in the outfield, and familiar with some of the pitchers. The Cubs were expected to trade Jones because he struggled so much this season, despite hitting .285 with 5 HR and 66 RBI. He had an excellent second half, even after nearly being traded to the Marlins. The Cubs plan to go after Kaz Matsui if he hits the market, but plan to give equal playing time to both DeRosa and Matsui. DeRosa and Matsui can alternate, while DeRosa can also play first, third, and the outfield. The Cubs also plan to look at Kosuke Fukudome, who is now a free agent, while the Tigers look to help their pitching, after filling needs at shortstop and now the outfield.

Tigers resign Jones: The Tigers have resigned Todd Jones to a one year deal worth 7 million dollars, a source close to negotiations has told me. This will probably be his last year with the club, who hope to give the closer role to Joel Zumaya, who will be out till July.

Fukudome Is A Free Agent

Kosuke Fukudome declared for free agency Monday, opening the way for a move to the major leagues. "I'd like to see what kind of interest I get," he said. "We'll see where this goes." For now, I expect a half-dozen teams to be interested, and he will probably make at least 10 million annually.

Ian Stewart At Second Base?

Sunday, November 11, 2007

The Rockies plan to keep Garrett Atkins after toying with the idea of trading him to make room for top prospect Ian Stewart. This is a good move on O'Dowd's part to hold on Atkins, who keeps the core players together in hopes of another run at the World Series. Stewart is young, but has never played second base at the professional level and it may effect how comfortable he is while trying to adjust. They probably will not be able to keep both Torrealba and Matsui before the Wednesday deadline, especially because there is so much interest in both players. They will probably go after Michael Barrett if Torrealba leaves which could turn out to be one of the best signings in the off season. I do not think they are ready to trade either Atkins or Stewart, so starting Stewart at Triple-A playing him at second base might be an option. Once he gets comfortable playing there and is still hitting well, then call him up and ease him into the role. We will see what the Rockies do, but this is what I think.

Let me know what you think they should do with Ian Stewart.

Yankees, Posada Close to Deal: "We're really close," Posada told reporters. "It's not about the money. For me, it's the best situation." My guess is it is a three year deal, worth 40-45 million dollars with an option for a fourth year.

Brewers Might Tender Estrada

According to MLB Rumors Correspondent Thomas Reiss, Brewers GM Doug Melvin plans to look at some of the free agent catchers available, suggesting that they plan to tender Johnny Estrada. There are several catchers available, and the most likely replacements seem to be either Paul Lo Duca, Michael Barrett, or Yorvit Torrealba. Estrada was not terrible for the Brewers this season, batting .278 with 10 HR and 54 RBI. Some of the other catchers have the potential to be better, but were not this season which makes me think Melvin might be saying this to stir up interest in his catcher. There are no replacements that are major league ready and he will only be making about 4.2-4.5 million dollars next season, a lot less than what the free agents will be getting. But he is coming off elbow surgery and risk of him not performing both at the plate and behind the plate makes some think that the Brewers will overpay to make sure that will not happen. Furthermore, the scuffle he had with manager Ned Yost did upset some in the Front Office which could also lead to his departure. For now, I suspect that they will hold on to him. He is a veteran catcher who would continue to work with some of the young pitchers now on the staff and is on schedule to be ready for Spring Training 2008.

Phillies Looking For Outfielder

Since the Phillies traded Michael Bourn and are resigned to letting Aaron Rowand walk, they are scanning the trade market for an outfielder. "We're still keeping an eye on Aaron, but I'm not sure he's a realistic piece for us right now," Amaro said. "If we're not in a position to bring back Aaron or someone of that ilk, we'll be looking for a fourth or fifth outfielder." The Phillies have not named any potential replacements in the outfield, but we can speculate that it won't be a big name outfielder because the Phillies do not have the minor league depth to trade for someone like that. The first name that comes to mind is Coco Crisp, who the Phillies have showed some interest in. He would be great to slot in center field and isn't a free agent till 2009, when he has a eight million dollar club option for 2010. Crisp batted .268 with 6 HR, 60 RBI, and 28 SB this season, but with Jacoby Ellsbury showing that he can handle the everyday job, Crisp becomes expendable. After Crisp, it is possible they could make a run at Josh Hamilton of the Reds. Hamilton was a nice surprise for the Reds, but their outfield is crowded and they may look to trade him. Although Cardinals manager Tony La Russa is against it, they could swing a deal for Chris Duncan. Duncan has good power, but some scouts have compared him to Pat Burrell, who the Phillies are looking to trade too. Beyond them, I expect them to be interested in Jacque Jones, Rick Ankiel, Jason Bay, and Bill Hall.

Yankees to Release Pavano

One could argue the biggest mistake the Yankees made since 2000 was signing Carl Pavano to a four year contract worth 39.95 million dollars. Well the Yankees plan to put that behind them, and release Pavano sometime before the November 20th deadline so they can have a spot open on their forty-man roster. Some speculate that they will hold on to Pavano and let him get healthy before trading him. But that wouldn't make much sense because no one would trade for an eleven million dollar man who has gone 5-6 with a 4.77 ERA in four years. I assume they will drop him early to make room to protect Jeffery Marquez from the Rule V, especially because there are younger players who signed major league contracts who cannot be moved. If Pavano is released, I doubt there will not be interest. Why not dish out a invitation to Spring Training to this guy? He pitched in a World Series, he is now a veteran, and would cost next to nothing. It wouldn't surprise me to see the Cardinals or Marlins jump on him. The Marlins are careful where they spend their money and could do it to bring back a veteran arm. The Cardinals tried very hard to land Pavano four years ago and could do it again at a reduced price.

Phillies Resign Romero

Saturday, November 10, 2007

According to MLB Rumors Correspondent Steve Wilson, the Phillies have signed J.C. Romero to a three year contract. The Phillies continue to reconstitute their bullpen by adding Brad Lidge and now signing Romero, who was 2-2 with a 1.92 ERA and 42 K. An announcement is expected Monday.

Source: Cubs Considering Guillen

Despite recent reports stating that Jose Guillen bought performance-enhancing drugs, there is still interest for him. The first teams that have stated their interest are the Royals, Mets, and Orioles; however, it appears that the Cubs will join the race looking at Guillen as a fallback option if they miss out on Kosuke Fukudome. Guillen would be great in the Cubs outfield though. His offensive numbers and solid OBP would give the most potent offense in the National League. This season, Guillen batted .290 with 23 HR and 99 RBI, so expect him to receive a pretty good payday. The Cubs are looking to move Jacque Jones and have held talks with the Tigers, Marlins, and Astros about a possible trade. Because the Cubs and Tigers are so adamant about not going after A-Rod, they have found common ground in needs and wants and could swing a deal. We will find out more next week with Kosuke Fukudome because he is still in negotiations with his team in Japan, but if he signs with the Dragons, expect the Cubs to make an aggressive offer to Guillen.

Catcher Grumblings

There are several catchers on the market and it appears a lot of them will be switching homes. Here is the breakdown on these catchers:

C Jorge Posada, Yankees
Posada's negotiations have turned south, and the Yankees are hoping a new contract will change his mind. Most people still believe he will return to the Yankees, but the recent fallout of several players makes me think he will test the market. The Mets are pursuing Yorvit Torrealba, but are keeping Posada at their side. If Posada hits the market, expect the Mets to make a "very aggressive" offer.

C Yorvit Torrealba, Rockies
Torrealba put up solid numbers in the postseason raising his value a little more. He is drawing serious interest from the Marlins and Mets, but the Rockies still hope to hold on to him. Torrealba probably plans to test the waters, and if he does, the Rockies might look elsewhere. According to MLB Rumors Correspondent Brady Yu, they have talked with the representatives of Michael Barrett, and consider him the favorite to land the job if Torrealba walks.

C Michael Barrett, Padres
Barrett will probably get a two to three year deal with annually salary of about 5-6 million. The Padres do not plan to bring him back and all teams are looking at him as an option. The Rockies are most serious about him, I think it is because they know his past numbers and what he could do at Coors Field. The Marlins have expressed interest, along with the Orioles, but only if they trade Ramon Hernandez.

C Jason Kendall, Cubs
The Cubs were very pleased with Geovanny Soto and have said that Kendall is free to test the waters. Although Kendall would love to return, he would love a starting job. The Padres, who have long enamored Kendall, would love to bring him in. Not only would he help some of the Padres pitchers, but he could work with Colt Morton.

C Paul Lo Duca, Mets
If Jorge Posada leaves, the Yankees might go in and sign Paul Lo Duca. But for now, it is up in the air. The Mets, Marlins, and Rockies all look at him as a fall back option, with a dark horse as the Pirates, if they trade Ronny Paulino. The Mets were displeased with the negative attention Lo Duca carried around with him, which is why many think negotiations have stopped. A possibility is the Blue Jays, who would like an upgrade over Greg Zaun.

C Ramon Castro, Mets
Castro put up great numbers as a backup and will probably seek a starting job somewhere. I think a good option is the Nationals, who have yet to find a good catcher and are stuck with Schneider. It is possible he could be the Mets starting catcher in '08, but I think they are looking to make a splash, and will see how the market turns out.

Pirates To Keep Izturis, Sign Wilson?

It appears that the Pirates will look to trade Jack Wilson, a move that would allow them to resign Cesar Izturis. Personally, I do not understand the move. Yes, you might be able to acquire some solid prospects in a trade, but why trade away his above average production? Also, Izturis hasn't proved to anyone that he can return from injury which sidelined him 2005 and 2006. He also has had only one good year, and is no longer a running threat. I'm not sure where Izturis will end up, but it should not be the Pirates. In other news, the Pirates are looking into signing Craig Wilson as a bench player. Wilson was traded in 2006 to the Yankees and last year he spent time with the Braves. Bringing him back would be a good move, I think. It is where he is most comfortable and where his most productive years were. He would take a low-based contract, and could turn out to help the team.

Instant Replay Talk: The five teams that voted against it were the Reds, Cubs, Brewers, Astros, and Twins. Interesting that four teams come from the NL Central. Thoughts?

Interview with Ryan Theriot

Friday, November 9, 2007

This afternoon, I had the privilege of talking to Cubs shortstop Ryan Theriot. Theriot made his first appearance with the Cubs in 2005, and has emerged as the shortstop of the future by his performance since making it. Being a Cubs fan, I was really excited to talk to him, especially because I have followed him since he got up to Double-A. I want to thank him for giving me his time for this interview. I also want to thank Josh Goldberg of Beverly Hills Sports Council for getting this done for me, I really appreciate it.

ELI: Growing up in Louisiana, did you have a favorite baseball team?

RYAN: Probably the Cubs and the Braves. Mostly, because of the channels we got, WGN and TBS. I'd get home from school and be able to watch the Cubs in the afternoon and then watch the Braves later.

ELI: What was it like playing baseball at LSU? What part of your game was most improved by your time there?

RYAN: Playing at LSU was great. When I got there, they had won four straight National Championships, so they were the powerhouse of College Baseball. It was an incredible place, a great spot to grow as a player. I think my maturity level grew a lot while I was there. Being able to play in front of 8,000 people, where it was sold out, helped me grow as a player. That was the first time in my career that I was in the public eye, and I think I matured really quick because of it.

ELI: Can you take me through the at-bat when you broke up Mark Prior's no-hitter? Have you talked with him about it?

RYAN: Oh yeah. I remind him about it all the time. The third baseman took about three steps in before he [Prior] threw me a sinker. I was able to chop it right over the third baseman's head. When I got over to first Prior stared me down; it was all downhill for him from there.

ELI: In 2006, you were up and down with the team. Was it hard to adjust or get comfortable moving up and down all the time?

RYAN: Yeah. But I think it proved to me that I belonged there. You know, I was able to get over that it was the MLB-it was my league, it was where I wanted to be. I think [GM] Jim [Hendry] handled me very well. I did not have too much pressure on me because of him.

ELI: People always say success in baseball is all about chemistry, what is it like having former college teammate Mike Fontenot in the clubhouse everyday?

RYAN: It's awesome. Not many people can say that. We play the same positions we played back in college, where we won a World Series. Like you said, it is mental, and I think it is great.

ELI: You've been forced to switch numbers several times over the past couple seasons, are you finally set with number 2?

RYAN: I was actually thinking about switching to number three for next year. I've made a couple changes. I never wanted to be number 55, I always wanted a single number. So I moved to seven, then to three, and then back to seven. But DeRo [Mark DeRosa] took that so I got two. I think I will stay with number 2, unless we acquire Derek Jeter this off season.

ELI: People always say Cubs fans are one of a kind, what do you think it is about them?

RYAN: They have been great for me. They are always encouraging me, always positive, I've always enjoy Chicago because of them. One big thing is the know baseball. They understand when a player has four good at-bats, but can't get on base. Or when you hustle out a ground ball, they applaud effort. Some cities would boo you for some of the things Cubs fans understand.

ELI: When I tell people that you had 28 SB, they didn't know it was that high, do you think you have a good read on pitchers or just an itch for finding the right pitch to go on?

RYAN: I think it is a little of both. I think the first thing is that you want to steal bases. I probably should have had stolen more bases, but I wasn't given the green light as much as I wanted. But when I get on first or second I am usually looking to steal.

ELI: I was in Cincinnati to see the final series where you guys clinched, were you surprised by how many Cubs fans were there?

RYAN: Not at all. I fully expected them to be there. There are few ballparks around the country that have more of their fans than Cubs fans.

ELI: Can you think of one pitcher you have had constant success against?

RYAN: Not really. There are teams I feel comfortable with, or stadiums I like hitting at. I really like Cincinnati. Not because of their pitchers, I think I just see the ball better there. My first series there I was able to get a bunch of hits and I think I just feel more comfortable because of it.

ELI: Now I have heard different things, but who is better: Kanye or 50 Cent?

RYAN: 50 Cent.

ELI: Really?

RYAN: Yeah. But I think Lil' Wayne tops them all. I am a big Southern Rap guy.

ELI: Besides Wrigley Field, do you have a favorite stadium to play at? Clubhouse?

RYAN: I like Milwaukee a lot. The temperature stays the same, the stadium looks nice. For clubhouses, I like Atlanta, Milwaukee, and San Diego is nice. Yeah, San Diego is really nice, better than Wrigley.

ELI: If you could bat against one pitcher in the past, who would it be?

RYAN: There are two guys I can think of: Nolan Ryan and Bob Gibson.

Orioles Interested In Burnett?

The Orioles are on the verge of rebuilding, and it might start with a trade to land pitcher A.J. Burnett. Although the Blue Jays are not usually for trading in the division, the Orioles have always been interested in Burnett, and would love to add him while he is available. Burnett has been very consistent playing in the AL East, and would probably be very similar with the Orioles. He put up 10 wins with a 3.75 ERA, but is 2-0 with a 4.43 ERA in three games at the Camden Yards. Burnett can opt out of his contract after next season, the Orioles probably would not have to sacrifice as much. An interesting idea would be to see them trade Ramon Hernandez. The Blue Jays have Greg Zaun currently at the spot and Hernandez would definitely be an upgrade. Andy McPhail has been in baseball for a long time, and plans to be very aggressive this year for the Orioles. I expect him to make some major changes.

Sheets To Mets?

The Mets are interested in landing a big name starter; but might now want to give up too much to acquire one. The perfect fit right now appears to be the Brewers, who have starting pitcher Ben Sheets. The Brewers have a lot of depth in their rotation right now and could afford to trade Sheets, especially because he has one year with eleven million dollars on his contract. But because he has had some injury problems the past three seasons failing to start over 25 games, they probably can't get as much. Nevertheless, Sheets was 12-5 this season with a 3.82 ERA and 106 K in 141.1 innings, so he can still pitch and be effective. If the Brewers are looking for prospects in return, I expect them to inquire about Francisco Pena, son of Tony Pena Sr. He is a young catcher who has a lot of potential and is considered to be the next catcher for the Mets. However, if they get one player in return, they might be able to snag one of the Mets outfielders, but only if they pay most of his contract. I suspect they would ask for Carlos Gomez. Mets GM Omar Minaya will probably look to big name players before falling back on Sheets, but I think that is his best bet.

Shortstop Grumblings

Shortstops are hard to come by this offseason and you can expect more trades this offseason. Let's start with the Braves. The Braves traded Edgar Renteria to open the spot for Yunel Escobar, but now they are looking for another shortstop, and one to backup Escobar. I'm not sure many teams are looking to shop backup infielders, but I'm sure you could find one. Escobar is young, so they will not be trading for a young, promising short stop to take the spot in a year or so. It would be a stretch to say that they would trade for infielder Ronny Cedeno, who has been primarily a backup after struggling in 2006. One option is Ramon Vazquez of the Rangers. He batted .230 with 8 HR and 28 RBI in 104 games with the Rangers. This seems like a good to me. Vazquez can play several positions in the infield and the Rangers are actively looking to make trades. They have good relations with the Rangers, and could acquire a young prospect or two. Other options include Ramon Martinez, Jamey Carroll, and Jeff Keppinger.

The Devil Rays prefer defense at shortstop, and are inquiring about Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson. Wilson has been the subject of several trade talks with other teams, but nothing has happened. The Devil Rays seem like a good fit. They could send two or three prospects, maybe Brendan Harris to bring him in. Wilson was pretty solid offensively though, batting .296 with 12 HR and 56 RBI and made 11 errors in 640 chances. Other teams expected to be interested include the Cardinals, Nationals, and maybe Blue Jays.

Closer Roger Clemens?

The Astros traded away closer Brad Lidge to the Phillies, opening their closer spot to probably Chad Qualls. Qualls did very well as a late inning reliever and he will probably continue to be effective. Clemens, who is leaving the Yankees to "retire" and become a consultant for the Astros, could take over the closer spot next season. I know it does not sound likely, but it is possible, and it would make for an interesting situation. Clemens was 6-6 this season with a 4.18 ERA and 68 K in 99 innings of work. I think he could pitch again, and being a closer would take some stress of his arm. Furthermore, he could work with young pitchers and hitters on the team. However, there are two big obstacles holding this scenario back. One, is Clemens willing to close? Probably not, which makes this seem unlikely. Two, how much money would he want for one year? Probably another pro-rated contract for about 20 million dollars. Personally, I think he would be effective, and would love to see him do this, but he is probably finally calling it a career.

Let me know, do you think Clemens would be a successful closer?

Mets Look To Sign Kim?

The Mets has always been known to sign veteran players looking for a turn around. Their coaches are experts, like most in the league, but the Mets make sure they bring in certain players who would benefit from the coaches help. This year, the Mets plan to sign free agent Byung-Hyun Kim. Kim, who has struggled over the past couple years, is being targeted by the Mets because of his work ethic. Not only that, but pitching coach Rick Peterson has had success working with side-arm relievers like Chad Bradford and Pedro Feliciano. I assume the Mets would give him a chance to start, but I think he is better suited for the bullpen. Kim was 10-8 this season with a 6.08 ERA and 107 K.

Interview with Justin Upton

Earlier this week, I had the privilege of talking with Diamondbacks right fielder Justin Upton. Upton was called up in August for the Diamondbacks and quickly emerged as the starting right fielder. He played well in the playoffs and all signs point to him because a very good player. Upton began the year at High-A and finished the year as the starting right fielder for the Diamondbacks, which shows how talented he really is. I want to thank him again for donating his time for this interview. I also want to thank Mike Dillon of Reynolds Sports Management for setting this up for me.

ELI: Coming into high school, do you remember what you wanted to work on most?

JUSTIN: Not much, I still just wanted to have fun. As I got older, I worked on my swing a lot, and having a consistent approach at the plate. At the time, I was a shortstop. So I also wanted to get better there.

ELI: You started the year strong with the Oaks, did you see the call up coming?

JUSTIN: At High-A, I started off strong and was hitting the ball well. I went on a streak for a couple weeks and I stayed hot, so I thought I had one coming. Also, towards the end the coaches starting joking more about a call up so it was not too much of a surprise.

ELI: Is it hard to believe that you started the year at Single-A and are now with the Diamondbacks?

JUSTIN: Yeah, I was playing well at Double-A and was just hoping that I would be a September call-up. But when I got the call and they told me, it was sweet, it was crazy.

ELI: Your first hit came against Derek Lowe, can you take me through that at-bat?

JUSTIN: Well, he is a sinker-ball pitcher so what I was trying to do was get the ball up. I was lucky enough to get one up in the zone and drive it because usually you are lucky to get one high up in the zone.

ELI: How about your first homerun off of Tom Gorzelanny?

JUSTIN: Well, I didn't know the stadium too well so I couldn't tell if it was gone but I hit it pretty good. I wasn't sure, so I took off out of the box and when I saw it was gone, I just saw everyone laughing in the dugout.

ELI: When your brother [B.J. Upton] started playing outfield, did you give him any pointers?

JUSTIN: Nah. He is very athletic and versatile and he has good coaches down there too so he didn't need my help.

ELI: Both of you guys are very fast, but who is faster?

JUSTIN: I probably have better times in the book. But there are two types of fast. He is taller and longer, so he runs a bit smoother than me, but I get going faster.

ELI: What has been your most embarrassing moment since being called up?

JUSTIN: Probably the rookie hazing. It was pretty embarrassing, I had to dress like a baby in Colorado.

ELI: The first playoff game against the Cubs was a big one. What was that like for you to play and pick up your first hit?

JUSTIN: The playoffs are a different atmosphere. I made sure I didn't let the surroundings get the best of me, got myself feeling good, and cut out the crowd. It was a lot of fun.

ELI: I know this was a big problem in some clubhouses, but who was better: Kanye or 50 Cent?

JUSTIN: [Pause] Kanye!

ELI: Now that the season is over, what is next?

JUSTIN: Well, I have had a couple weeks off, and I'll probably start some heavy lifting next week.

ELI: What do you plan to work on this offseason?

JUSTIN: Well, you are always trying to get better. I'll work on my swing, and becoming more flexible.

ELI: Do you follow baseball in the offseason?

JUSTIN: Yes and No. I'll hop on MLB.com every once and awhile. I'll turn on Sportscenter, and they always have the updates so I'm pretty well updated.

ELI: If you could rob one person of a homerun, who would it be?

JUSTIN: Oh man, it would probably have to be brother, B.J. That would be really cool because he is my brother and that is something not everyone gets to do.

Nationals Interested In Pelfrey, Gomez

The Washington Nationals have tried hard to land young prospects Mike Pelfrey and Carlos Gomez, according to MLB.com. The Nationals would love to get younger, and those are the perfect players to try and land. However, what could the Nationals offer? Omar Minaya drafted Chad Cordero when he was with the Expos, but they have Billy Wagner and it does not make too much sense to bring him in that role. Nonetheless, Pelfrey would be great to add to the rotation while Gomez to the outfield. Both have solid potential and would benefit going to a low market town in the same division. I think that talks will slow down for now and in a month pick up again around the Winter Meetings. Both the Mets and Nationals are looking to improve and at the Winter Meetings, they can gauge their progress and meet again to discuss a deal. Last season with the Mets, Pelfrey went 3-8 with a 5.57 ERA in 15 games, not impressive for being considered a top prospect, but there is still time. I expect one of them to be moved, probably Gomez because there are other options in the outfield right now.

Mets After Gagne?

Wednesday, November 7, 2007

The Red Sox appear content on letting Eric Gagne walk as they work hard to sign Mike Lowell. Gagne, who struggled with Boston after being traded from the Rangers, is set to be a late inning reliever. This season, Gagne was 4-2 with a 3.81 ERA and 16 SV. I do not know if he would benefit from playing with the Mets, who, like the Red Sox, are in the media a lot, but a switch to the National League might help. He did have solid defense behind him and good run support, but struggled on the mound and made it known that he was feeling the pressure. Other than the Mets, the Giants, Rangers, Cubs, and Orioles have expressed interest. Because he is represented by Boras, you can expect Gagne, 31, to get a three year deal worth 7-10 million dollars annually.

Although Boras represents Alex Rodriguez, the Mets do not plan to talk with him about that. They do plan to also talk about the availability of Kyle Lohse, who is looking for a deal similar to Ted Lilly's last year, which was a four year deal, worth 40 million dollars. Lohse is worth no where near that, and would probably get a deal half that if the market was better. However, since he is leading the pack, he can pretty much set the pace.

Phillies Acquire Lidge

The Phillies have acquired Brad Lidge and Eric Bruntlett from the Astros in exchange for Michael Bourn, Geoff Geary, and Mike Costanzo. This really comes as no surprise for the pitching hungry Phillies. I think this move helps both teams. Michael Bourn is a young and capable outfielder who know gives the Astros an outfielder who can play all three positions. They also get Geoff Geary, whose experience in the National League will benefit the Astros. For the Phillies, Brad Lidge gives them an option at closer, or a solid setup role while Bruntlett probably won't benefit much from the bench. This season, Lidge was 5-3 with 19 SV and a 3.36 ERA while Bruntlett batted .246 with 0 HR and 14 RBI. Bourn, 24, batted .277 with 1 HR, 6 RBI, and 18 SB. This is the second big trade since the off season started, and time will tell whether this trade benefits the Astros or the Phillies. Ed Wade is keeping to his word that he would be very aggressive this off season, and trading Lidge, who was regarded as one of the best closers in the game just a couple years ago, shows that. The team really was not happy with his performance in the last year, so his departure appeared likely. Lidge made 5.35 this season with the Astros and I believe he is up for arbitration again, so he could make 6-6.40 million dollars for 2008.

Let me know who you think wins in this trade...

Buyers and Sellers

Here is a list of teams you should expect to buy, and a list of teams expected to sell:

BUYERS

Yankees
- Without a doubt. Losing Alex Rodriguez hurts, but what hurts even more is stating all season that they will not negotiate once he opts out. We know the Yankees are dieing to talk money with Rodriguez, but have made no indication that they actually will. Because of it, expect the Yankees to basically unload their farm system again for players Miguel Cabrera and possibly Johan Santana. I expect them to get Cabrera, and then go after a solid pitcher to help the rotation now thatPettitte is gone.

Potential Sellers: Marlins, Twins, Mariners, Rockies, and Orioles.

Rangers
- The Rangers have some solid players that are drawing interest. And the Rangers, are looking for solid upgrades around the field. They are looking to find a first baseman, while exploring the market for another infielder and center fielder. They have talked with the RedSox about a potential deal for Coco Crisp, but no real progress has been made. They are also looking into the possibility of acquiring RichieSexson from the Mariners in exchange for Vicente Padilla.

Potential Sellers: Red Sox, Mariners, Cubs, Dodgers, Braves, and White Sox.

Dodgers
- They bought Joe Torre and are already a better team because of it. They are very interested in Alex Rodriguez, Andruw Jones, Hiroki Kuroda, and even Johan Santana. Obviously, they will not get them all, but one, maybe two is a definite possibility. They have the money to spend, and will definitely be spending.

Potential Sellers: Twins, Marlins, White Sox, Cubs, Braves, and Rangers.

Giants
- The Giants have a lot of wholes to fill now that Barry Bonds has left and are already looking at possibilities such as Alex Rodriguez, Carl Crawford, andDelmon Young. All they will be selling some of their pitchers, I think there best bet is signing Rodriguez, and holding on to some of their pitchers for just a little bit longer.

Potential Sellers: Devil Rays and Phillies.

Twins
- They will probably lose both Torii Hunter and Carlos Silva and are exploring all options. They are looking at Rocco Baldelli, Coco, Crisp, and according to MLB Rumors Correspondent Steve Wilson, Felix Pie as well. Not only that, but they are exploring the possibility of trading for Jon Garland, but I doubt that will happen. Despite them trying to trade Johan Santana, more upgrades will come from buying.

Potential Sellers: Devil Rays, Athletics, and Rockies.

SELLERS

White Sox
- They can probably be considered both, but they are definitely selling right now. They are shopping their whole pitching staff in exchange for some solid prospects while looking for a suitor for JoeCrede. They are very interested in Torii Hunter, but I see them taking the trade route to find better upgrades.

Potential Buyers: Yankees, Rockies, Astros, Mariners, Dodgers, Rangers, and Braves.

Marlins
The Marlins have two solid players that they have put on the market, and they are already drawing a lot of interest. I do not expect them to tradeDontrelle Willis, but we could see Miguel Cabrera on the move. The list won't be too long because the Marlins asking price is so high, but there will be interest. Other than Cabrera, expect them to shop Anibal Sanchez, who they have had some problems with over the past year.

Potential Buyers: Yankees, Phillies, Red Sox, Dodgers, and Giants.

Athletics
The Athletics have admitted that their farm system is weak and will probably look to restock this off season. The three players that plan to trade are JoeBlanton, Dan Haren, and Dan Johnson. Blanton and Haren are already drawing interest while Johnson could easily be dumped for some low level players. I expect many teams to be interested in the two pitchers because the market is so weak, so they will probably get a lot in return.

Potential Buyers: Rockies, Mets, Diamondbacks, Cardinals, Phillies, and Reds.

If you have any others, leave me a comment and I will add them.

Report: Red Sox, Yankees, Now Waiting

According to MLB Rumors Correspondent Brady Yu, the Red Sox have made an official offer to Mike Lowell and are waiting to hear back from him. Also, the Yankees have offered a three year deal, worth 39 million dollars to Mariano Rivera, as reported by Jon Heyman. The Red Sox offer is believed to be a three year deal with an option for a fourth, but nothing has been confirmed otherwise. Calls were put in to both Brian Cashman and Theo Epstein, but were not immediately returned.

Cordero Suitors Growing?

Brewers closer Francisco Cordero is likely heading to the market. There have been no indications that they are nearing a deal, and many teams are meeting with his agent stating their interest. Cordero was 0-4 with a 2.98 ERA and 44 SV this season for the Brewers, his best year since the 2004 season with the Rangers. Many teams have said they would love to make him their closer, but no appears to be the front runner. The Phillies, Astros, Cubs, Tigers, and Rangers are interested in Cordero, and he would like to see the offer they will make before talking again with the Brewers. The Cubs plan to move Ryan Dempster into the rotation and if they are happy with Marmol and Howry as the late inning relievers, they could make a run at Cordero for their closer. The Phillies, who are desperate for pitching, plan to make a strong bid for him next week while the Tigers have already held discussions with his agent. As of right now, I think Cordero will return, but his interest in exploring the market makes me think he might walk too. We will know more next week but for now, my guy is he will resign.

White Sox Sign Uribe:
The Chicago White Sox resigned Juan Uribe to a one year deal worth 4.5 million dollars. A little surprising, considering the interest in David Eckstein, which was genuine. Uribe had 20 HR but batted .240. We'll see if he can adjust. Next season, Rafael Furcal is available, Edgar Renteria might be available, so there are proven options for next season if he struggles.

Phillies Fallback Option?

Now that the Phillies have missed out on Curt Schilling, and it appears that Mariano Rivera is close to signing his new deal, the Phillies have set their sights on Japanese pitcher Hiroki Kuroda. But who has not set their sights on Kuroda? Since he filed for free agency Monday, a dozen teams have come out and stated their interest. The Dodgers, who have Takashi Saito, a close friend of his, are interested, the Phillies, Cardinals, Rockies, and Red Sox have also said they are initially interested. Kuroda, 32, is 103-89 with a 3.69 ERA in 11 seasons with the Carp. He has a good sinker ball, and his fastball has solid downward movement in the mid-90s that would benefit a lot of stadiums. I suspect him to command about 8-11 million dollars annually for three or fours years. Despite the Cubs moving Ryan Dempster to the rotation, I still consider them the front-runner. They went very hard for him last year and certainly will again, so it makes sense that he could sign there. However, the Mariners Kenji Johjima would work nicely with Kuroda behind the plate while Ichiro is there as well. Even the Red Sox, if they were interested, because Okajima and Matsuzaka could help him adjust to pitching in the big leagues. Kuroda requires no posting fee, so come next week teams will start bidding like crazy for his services.

Blue Jays Looking To Trade Burnett

Tuesday, November 6, 2007

The Blue Jays landed A.J. Burnett in 2005 giving him a five year deal, worth 55 million dollars. However, the deal included an opt clause that gives him the option to walk. So it makes sense that if he does well, he will opt out and look to make more money on the market. The Blue Jays realize that and now plan to entertain offers for the right hander. Burnett was 10-8 with a 3.75 ERA, and has been fairly consistent with the Blue Jays during the past two seasons. I'm not sure what the Blue Jays would get for him because he is owed so much, but if they agree to pay some of the contract, I'm sure they could land a couple prospects and a pitcher. I expect the Diamondbacks, Reds, Phillies, Cardinals, and maybe Dodgers to be interested, among others. The Cardinals tried very hard to sign him but refused to give him an opt clause, so he signed with the Blue Jays. This is definitely a win-win for Burnett. Not only might he get traded to a contender, but if he is not happy where he is, all he has to do is stick it out for one more year and then he is on the market again.

Red Sox Interested In Taguchi

So Taguchi's option was declined by the Cardinals the other day, ending his tenure with the team. Taguhi, 38, batted .290 with 3 HR and 30 RBI as the Cardinals backup outfielder, but his speed and defense makes him much more valuable. The Red Sox are finding ways to bring in Japanese players as a bargaining chip when negotiating with other Japanese players, including Hitoki Iwase. Beyond Ramirez, Ellsbury, and Drew, the Red Sox do not have much for their outfield. Bobby Kielty was not impressive as a backup and they could use a more effective one. A one year deal worth two million dollars would fit nicely with Taguchi, who can play all three outfield spots and communicate with pitchers Daisuke Matsuzaka and Hideki Okajima. According to MLB Rumors Correspondent Brady Yu, one Red Sox executive was intrigued by the idea, but would not confirm interest in signing him. We will know by the end of the month if they are interested or not, but I think this is a perfect match.

Royals Should Consider Bonds

The Kansas City Royals biggest need is a guy with power. They have twenty-five million dollars to spend and will look for both a hitter and a pitcher, which is not out of the question with their budget. Although Bonds wants to go to a contender, the only logical teams in the AL are not contenders. The Yankees are not interested, the Angels are not interested, so he may be out of luck. One thing is for certain though, he wants 3,000 hits and would probably settle for a one year deal with a team to accomplish that feat. For one year, Bonds would probably cost 12-15 million dollars. That still gives them plenty of money to get a pitcher while giving them thousands of more fans who want to see Barry Bonds on their new jumbo screen. Bonds would work nicely in their DH spot, and could mentor young players Alex Gordon, Tony Pena, and outfielder Mark Teahen. They could move Billy Butler to first base and put Bonds, who batted .276 with 28 HR and 66 RBI, at DH. Playing DH would also increase his numbers. I think the Royals would love to have the first player to ever reach 800 homeruns on their team. Other than Barry Bonds, expect the Royals to inquire about Geoff Jenkins, Cliff Floyd, and maybe Tony Clark.

Wood Getting More Interest

Although the Cubs are making signing Kerry Wood a priority, the more teams that state their interest publically, the less chance the Cubs have of signing him while they have exclusive negotiating rights. Personally, I think Kerry Wood will return to the Cubs. He loves Chicago and knows the Cubs have been good to him while he has been injured. However, the Rangers, Reds, and Tigers are expressing interest as a reliever initially, but ultimately to put him back in the rotation. Interesting, especially because if the Cubs don't offer that too he will probably walk. The Rangers make the most sense though. Wood is from Irving, Texas and they could offer him a spot anywhere in the rotation or bullpen. Wood was 1-1 this season with a 3.33 ERA in 22 games, but his history of injuries will probably bring him an incentive laden contract.

Cubs after Kaz Matsui?: According to the Denver Post, the Cubs are preparing a big offer for Kaz Matsui. This means two things: The Cubs will move Jacque Jones and put Mark DeRosa in right field or they will move Ryan Theriot and try Matsui at shortstop. Personally, I am against the signing of Kaz Matsui. I think it is a ploy in attempts of signing either Kosuke Fukudome or Hiroki Kuroda. They simply do not have room for him unless they plan on not playing Matt Murton or Jacque Jones. However, Some suggest Ryan Theriot is not capable of holding an everyday job, and the Cubs might realize that this season. I for one, disagree. I believe Theriot is one of the best situational hitters in the National League and is capable of playing several positions successfully. Aside from Matsui, the Cubs plan to go for Carl Crawford, Kosuke Fukudome, Hiroki Kuroda, and possibly David Riske, but it has not been confirmed yet.

Diamondbacks After Bonderman?

The Diamondbacks are looking to improve their pitching, and it starts with finding a solid pitcher. Hernandez to free agency so adding two pitchers seem reasonable. I think that there is a good chance they will acquire They will probably lose LivanErvin Santana, especially because the Angels are looking to trade him. Another possible pitcher who they have expressed interest in is Jeremy Bonderman. I think the Tigers would be interested here, despite losing Joel Zumaya last week. They traded away two solid prospects and could use two more for the future. Their outfield will need a new face soon so we could see them trade for Aaron Cunningham and Brooks Brown or Esmerling Vasquez. For now it is just speculation, but Bonderman was 11-9 with a 5.01 ERA, but has picked up 28 wins between 2005-2006, so he is consistent and successful in the American League. We will know more as this GM Meetings go on, but I suspect something happening following the meetings.

Gonzalez on Radar?: Although Luis Gonzalez would like to return to the Dodgers, he is probably on his way out. I'm not sure where the interest is coming from, but it appears the Tigers would like to bring him in. He is a lefty, who batted .278 with 15 HR and 68 RBI, but he will be 41 next season so a one year deal would only work for them.

Here Come The Nats

The Nationals are looking for to make a big splash, and might come up surprising the baseball world by landing Andruw Jones. Team President Stan Kasten, who worked with Jones while in Atlanta, met up with him at his Alabama home to explain why he thinks Jones is a good fit. Personally, I think it is a great fit. He would go somewhere with little to no media coverage, and have a franchise built around him. However, he did thrive standing in the shadows of Chipper Jones, Tom Glavine, and John Smoltz. Nonetheless, we know that the 2007 Andruw Jones will only get better, and for a team that is so willing to spend the money, the Nationals are a great choice. The Nationals are not just sold on Jones though. They have put in calls to both agents of Aaron Rowand and Torii Hunter. Aside from a center fielder, the Nationals have made contact with Livan Hernandez, a former National, about rejoining the rotation. Another great move on Kasten's part, who would bring in Hernandez and use him to show more lucrative free agents what they would like to do. Time will tell whether or not the Nationals will make these moves, but they are putting themselves in good shape to be the favorite.

Report: Red Sox Near Deal With Schilling

Monday, November 5, 2007

According to the Boston Herald, the Red Sox are nearing a deal with Curt Schilling. Although the details are not being released, it is believed to be a one year deal, worth about 10 million dollars, with incentives. Similar to what Greg Maddux got, just the incentives probably include innings pitched, strikeouts, and maybe an MVP or Cy Young bonus. Schilling, who turns 41 next week, went 9-8 with a 3.87 ERA this season before getting three wins in the postseason. This is a great move by the Red Sox who can now give Schilling the proper send off. Not only that, but it solves the rotation problem and sets them up with another great chance to take the division. Other than the Red Sox, the Astros, Diamondbacks, Brewers, and Cubs had all contacted Schilling expressing their interest.

Pettitte Declines Option

According to sources, Andy Pettitte has declined his option and is now a free agent. "I have spoken with Brian Cashman, who has reiterated what Hank Steinbrenner said about the Yankees wanting to give Andy all the time he needs to decide about next season," Pettitte's agent, Randy Hendricks, said Monday in an e-mail to The Associated Press. "Accordingly, we are declining to exercise the option for 2008 and Andy will declare free agency in order to free up a roster spot for the Yankees." Pettitte is the new Roger Clemens, meaning he will wait till May on whether to pitch the following season. I expect him to come back, just not with the Yankees. He is a big fan of Joe Torre and Don Mattingly and I think his comments saying it was Yankees or nothing were generated before he became manager. Torre could definitely lobby Colletti to sign Pettitte, and I think they will inform Pettitte of their interest, but give him all the time he needs to make up his mind. Pettitte was 15-9 with a 4.05 ERA for the Yankees this year, including 11-3 after the All-Star break. The Yankees have gotten weaker, and this now might lead to the departure of Jorge Posada, maybe even Mariano Rivera.

Division Breakdown: AL East

The American League East has always been a competitive division, so I expect them to try and improve in any way possible. The Yankees and Red Sox are obviously on top, but that will not stop the Devil Rays, Orioles, or Blue Jays from making a run. Let's see where they stand:

1. Red Sox
The Red Sox are sitting mighty high on top of the baseball world after winning their second World Series in four years. More importantly, they have won two more World Series' since 2000 than the Yankees have. I do not see too big of improvements here, mainly just improving the bullpen and maybe bringing in another starter. They will probably sign Lowell, but if they don't, I do not expect them to trade for a big name. They think very highly of Jacoby Ellsbury and Jon Lester and do not plan to trade either. They will probably trade Coco Crisp, and probably bring in another Japanese pitcher to team up with Hideki Okajima in the bullpen.

2. Yankees
The Yankees lost their manager, coaching staff, and best player in baseball in a single month. Although they brought in Joe Girardi, they still need to make upgrades. I expect them to go big for Miguel Cabrera, and try and sign a pair of young pitchers. They could always trade for Johan Santana, but their is no reason to unload their whole minor league system. They are transforming into a young team again, and should look to bring in younger, developing players to lead this team in the next year or so. For first base, Eric Duncan seems like a good choice to offer the spot to in Spring Training, or else platoon with someone else. Maybe this is wishful thinking on my part, but a lot of teams are successful with sticking with their young players, and I think the Yankees might finally try it out.

3. Blue Jays
The Blue Jays struck out last year in landing proven pitching. Their outfield is weak and they could use a solid reliever to help out the bullpen. Don't rule out an Eric Gagne signing for the Blue Jays. The Canadian would probably take a two year deal to return home. Also, they could trade for outfielder Jason Bay, who happens to be Canadian as well, to play left field. That is setting up a solid outfield with Bay, Wells, and Rios. From there, the pitching market is weak but taking a chance on someone out there is not a bad move. They will not take the division in 2008, but could begin to change the face of the team if they pull off my moves.

4. Orioles
The Orioles need to clean house. They need to trade away just about everything and get a boatload of prospects in return. I mean trade: Bedard, Tejada, Mora, Roberts, Millar, and Hernandez. Build around Nick Markakis, because he is the only one that will get better. It will only be a couple years then that you will be fighting for the Wild Card while the aging Yankees fight to hang on.

5. Devil Rays
It all starts with the outfield. What they need to do is trade Carl Crawford for a star pitcher, and rebuild from there. I mean, move B.J. Upton to third base, move Iwamura to second base, and Brendan Harris to shortstop. Then you have Baldelli in left, Dukes in center, and Young in right field. Then once Johan Santana is dealt, put Kazmir on the market to the teams who missed out on Santana and receive a boatload of prospects in return. From there, lock up Carlos Pena and make a move on one of the free agent catchers. I say either Michael Barrett or Yorvit Torrealba. Gomes deserves another chance at DH, but maybe it would be smart to give a role like that to a veteran, maybe Barry Bonds?

Top 50 Free Agents: 41-50

41. Pedro Feliz, Giants

Although the Giants will go hard for Alex Rodriguez, I expect the Giants to resign him. He is very versatile and good with his glove. And if the Giants do sign Rodriguez, they could always shop Feliz.

Prediction: Giants

42. Paul Byrd, Indians

Despite the HGH speculation, I fully expect the Indians to bring him back. Eight million is a bargain these days especially for a durable veteran.

Prediction: Indians

43. Josh Fogg, Rockies

There will be interest in Fogg, and I think he is finally ready to cash in. He was very effective for the Rockies and I think teams will look for a two to three year deal. I do not think he is on the verge of being an All Star, but he can help out nonetheless.

Prediction: Mariners

44. Scott Linebrink, Brewers

Linebrink proved he was one of the best relievers in the game and will probably test the market for a short term deal. I expect the Phillies, who are desperate for pitching, to be all over him. He never really seemed connected to Milwaukee and could return to San Diego, or go to the weakened Tigers.

Prediction: Phillies

45. Kenny Rogers, Tigers

Many of you are surprised to see him this low, but Rogers can no longer be effective in the Majors. I think the Tigers will bring him back out of good will, and will use him sparingly, but he is better off retiring.

Prediction: Tigers

46. Marcus Giles, Padres

Giles really struggled this year with the Padres and will probably get another one year deal. I expect the Twins to be all over him because he will come at a cheap price, and has the ability to put up good numbers. Their infield is very weak right now, and could get him locked up quick and pursue other needs. Another option is the Rockies, but only if they cannot resign Kaz Matsui.

Prediction: Twins

47. David Riske, Royals

Riske will definitely be leaving the Royals and will go to the market. Since the Tigers lost Zumaya, their pen is very much depleted and I think the Tigers see how far Riske will go in terms of a solid bullpen.

Prediction: Tigers

48. Kaz Matsui, Rockies

Matsui’s career was revitalized in Colorado and I think he plans to stay, but at the right price.

Prediction: Rockies

49. Hitoki Iwase, Japan

The Red Sox will look to improve their bullpen and after the success of Okajima, it would not surprise me if they brought in one more Japanese pitcher to try it out. Iwase is considered one of the best in Japanese history, and would definitely benefit the Red Sox.

Prediction: Red Sox

50. Mike Lamb, Astros

Although there are other options, I expect the Rangers to take a chance on Lamb. He is a decent third baseman and would be more inclined to staying in Texas than going elsewhere. I think this is a good fit for both sides.

Prediction: Rangers

Honorable Mention

51. Kenshin Kawakami, Japan

Kawakami is a free agent and played for Hillman in Japan. The Royals are set to lose a couple free agents and he would be great to bring in and set up for the young relievers.

Prediction: Royals

52. Jason Jennings, Astros

The Rockies are already showing interest because of his success at Coors and because of their success, he might return at a reduced price.

Prediction: Rockies

53. Randy Wolf, Dodgers

Wolf is very injury prone but a team looking for a pitcher might take a chance on him. Mark Shapiro said they will look to improve pitching and I think instead of making a big splash, he might take a chance on him.

Prediction: Indians

Yankees Eye Third Base Replacement

The Yankees are preparing for life without Alex Rodriguez and are examining all options. Many players are available including Scott Rolen, Miguel Cabrera, Miguel Tejada, Hank Blalock, and Joe Crede. There has been speculation that the White Sox would acquire Johnny Damon for Joe Crede, but recent reports suggest they are more interested in Miguel Cabrera. Cabrera will definitely cost them. The Marlins are looking at both Phil Hughes and Melky Cabrera, and that is just a start. They might be able to get Eric Duncan as well, along with a solid young reliever. Cabrera, 24, batted .320 with 34 HR and 119 RBI. He has already won a World Series and is a career .313 hitter with 138 HR. He is definitely the best option because he is young and is someone that can be locked up for the next ten years. On the other hand, his growing weight problem might be a bigger problem in New York. Miguel Tejada will likely be traded this off season and the Yankees may be interested. He has experience playing against the AL East and in Yankee Stadium so adjusting would not be a problem. He is also willing to make a switch to third base and is under contract till 2009. He would not cost as much as Cabrera, and once his contract is up Miguel Cabrera is on the market so they could always take him. I do not doubt the Yankees will land something big-it is just a matter of when and at what cost.

Kazmir On The Move?

Twins pitcher Johan Santana is drawing a lot of buzz and the Twins are expected to get a boatload in return. Although Santana is just a year away from free agency, the list of teams is still growing. The Devil Rays have taken notice to what is going on and plan to shop Scott Kazmir, who is three years away from free agency. I'm sure teams would be interested in a pitcher who put a 3.49 ERA with a team like the Devil Rays, in the American League. We will know more this week as the Winter Meetings go on, but expect the Devil Rays to start dealing pretty soon.

Teams Interested in Sweeney

Sunday, November 4, 2007

Mike Sweeney is free agent this season and it is likely the Royals will not keep him. They have Billy Butler who is ready to take over and have other pressing issues beyond Sweeney. Not only is his power down, but the Royals are looking to take a new direction, and Sweeney is not involved in their plans. I think Sweeney will draw interest, but probably at a one year, incentive based deal. He has health problems that have limited him to 134 games over the past two seasons, and his power has been declining as well. I expect teams the Giants to be interested Mike Sweeney since Ryan Klesko is likey to hit the market. Beyond the Giants, the Yankees might look at a one to two year deal for Sweeney while first base prospect Juan Miranda develops. The Rangers would like to move Saltalamacchia back to catcher and if they cannot trade for Millar, could sign Sweeney at a low cost. I think Sweeney is capable of hitting .270 with 15 homeruns, he just needs to be healthy.

Sosa might be done?: Sammy Sosa filed for free agency and said he wants to play in 2008, but for seven million dollars. I think the Rangers are interested in having him back, but at another one year deal, worth 1-2 million dollars with added incentives. Sosa is foolish to think that he could make seven million dollars a year. He hit just .252 with 21 HR and an OBP of .311. Not even the Yankees would pay that much for Sosa's services. I think Sosa is not even worth four million dollars a year. There are teams that would bring him in as a DH, but mostly to fill seats. I see the Royals and Twins as possible suitors, but at a much reduced price. If Sosa does not lower his standards, he might be done.

Fire Sale Coming?

The Athletics have acknowledged that their minor league system is thinning and are looking for solid, young upgrades. Beane worked his magic this year acquiring Jerry Blevins, but he has yet to show his full potential. I think the players he is looking to trade are Dan Haren, Joe Blanton, and Dan Johnson. Haren would be a great fit for the Rockies. They need a proven pitcher and have solid, low-level prospects who are just a couple years away. I do not see many one-for-one type deals, but more Beane digging into the low-levels to find three or four prospects. Beane always finds the best time to trade his players, which is when teams are desperate to find upgrades after failing to make a splash on the market. Trades coming in early December or early January seem most likely, and I think they will dangle one, if not all three of the players. Other teams that could jump in on the sale include the Mets, Diamondbacks, Indians, White Sox, Marlins, Astros, and maybe Cardinals, but only if they fail to make a solid upgrade on the market.

J.D. Drew to Chicago?

The Cubs have an opening in their outfield and are looking for a left handed power hitter. They are assessing the situation with Felix Pie and will probably look to trade Jacque Jones, despite a potent second half. The Red Sox may look to trade Drew after putting up low power numbers, and the Cubs make most sense because Drew has had success in Chicago, and his contract favors the club he is with. Drew is set to make fourteen million dollars annually till 2011, but the club may opt out of the final two seasons if he spends 35 days on the disabled list in either 2009 or 2010 with injury related to his right shoulder, or if he finishes the season on the DL and cannot play outfield the following season. If Pie struggles, the Cubs could move Drew to center and play Matt Murton in right field. Personally, I am against this trade. I believe if the Cubs platoon Pie and Jones in center, and play Murton in right or go after free agent Kosukue Fukudome, it would keep a spot open for top outfield prospect Tyler Colvin. Colvin will probably start the year at Triple-A, but won't be with the club till 2009, barring injury.

Lincecum to Devil Rays?

The Giants are ready to field offers for their young pitchers, and in return, are looking for a center fielder. The newly named Devil Rays, now Rays, are the perfect fit because they have a crowded, yet capable outfield, and are looking for pitching. It is possible we could see Tim Lincecum traded to the Rays for Carl Crawford. Lincecum, 23, was 7-5 with a 4.00 ERA and 150 K while Crawford batted .315 with 11 HR, 80 RBI, and 50 SB. The Giants may look for an outfielder with more power, maybe Nick Markakis, but that is unlikely. Crawford is a career .296 hitter whose OBP comes out to .331 over six seasons with the Devil Rays. Not only that, but it would be an inexpensive trade and would allow them to still go after Alex Rodriguez. I know most Giants fans are probably against this, but this is definitely the right move. Lincecum was very inconsistent and put up a lot of walks every time he went out. Not only that, but you have Zito, Cain, Lowry, Correia, and probably a free agent in a rotation now backed by Crawford, who will provide more scoring opportunities batting at the top of the order, especially if they sign Rodriguez. I do not see this happening at the GM Meetings this week, but probably around the Winter Meetings.

Dodgers Interested In Pettitte?

According to MLB Rumors correspondent Thomas Reiss, the Dodgers are making it known that they are interested in a short term deal for Andy Pettitte. Maybe this is Joe Torre's work, but I think Pettitte and the Dodgers are a good fit. Pettitte was 15-9 with a 4.05 ERA this season for the Yankees, and is just 35. He would benefit from a two year deal, worth 23-26 million dollars. He would have a great defense behind him, and a solid bullpen backing him up. Most importantly however, he would be under the guidance of Joe Torre. I'm sure Pettitte is waiting to see what happens with Mariano Rivera and Jorge Posada, so we will not know if he opts out till the Yankees solve those problems. It would be hard for any 35 year old to turn down sixteen million dollars for one year, but Pettitte has always been beyond the money, going where he felt most comfortable. I see him taking a pay cut and walking from the troubled Yankees to a team on the rise, like the Dodgers. Although he has said he will retire if he does not exercise his clause with the Yankees, I doubt that is the case because of the Dodgers interest.

White Sox To Trade Crede?

The White Sox are desperate to make upgrades, and it all begins with finding a center fielder. Although there have been reports suggesting they are seriously interested in Torii Hunter and Aaron Rowand, it has been confirmed that the White Sox are interested in a Crede for Johnny Damon swap. With that trade, the Yankees acquire the third baseman they need while the White Sox solve one of their outfield positions, and clear the way for third base prospect Josh Fields. Don't rule the White Sox out of the running yet however. They could always move Damon to left and make a big offer to Hunter or Rowand. Another possibility is trading Jon Garland, who has one year worth 12 million dollars left on his contract. He has been so consistent and effective that past couple years that it will take a lot to acquire him, but no one is sure what they want in return for Garland. They could send him, cash, and a minor leaguer to the Angels and acquire Chone Figgins and maybe Ervin Santana. The Angels would get a proven pitcher to add to their already solid rotation while clearing a spot for Brandon Wood, if not Alex Rodriguez. While the White Sox would get a utility infielder that they could position at short, second, or even left field. They would also get a pitcher who probably needs a change of scenery and would benefit a switch to the South Side. Williams has no problem trading some of his best players, so things should get interesting this week.

Rangers Looking At Millar?

Although center field is top priority, the Rangers are looking for an upgrade at first base, and have set their sights on Kevin Millar of the Orioles. Millar is on the outs in Baltimore because he threw out the first pitch at a Red Sox game, and will probably be traded. He would be a solid addition to the Rangers, who could send Joaquin Arias in the deal to make room for Elvis Andrus. Also, by trading Arias, it might push the Orioles to trade Miguel Tejada knowing they have Arias there to take the spot for the time being. Arias, 23, has a lot of potential but still is a year or so away from being ready. After Millar, the Rangers are also interested in Mike Lamb, and have contacted his agent about their interest. They would be a good fit, especially because Lamb has experience playing in Arlington. If all else fails, Ben Broussard is expected to be non-tendered and he could be low risk player at a cheap price. The Rangers will try hard for Hunter or Rowand, so I expect them to solve the first base situation when they see how the market plays out.

Pirates Name Russell Manager

The Pirates are set to name John Russell their new manager, according to sources close to negotiations. Russell, who has managed the Phillies Triple-A team the past two seasons, was with the Pirates as a third base coach before Lloyd McClendon was fired. He is familiar with the organization, but was not exactly loved in Pittsburgh because of his poor judgement with runners being sent home. Personally, I think the Farrell is the better choice, but since he was not interested, I guess they feel that someone already familiar with team is best. An announcement is expect Monday, and if the team can improve, hopefully he will be able to hold the job for the next several seasons.

Silva Gaining Value

Saturday, November 3, 2007

Twins pitcher Carlos Silva has become even more attractive as a free agent when he wasn't ranked as a compensation free agent, the result of a poor numbers in 2006. He was 13-14 with a 4.19 ERA in 2007 and is seeking a three to four year deal worth 10-12 million dollars annually. Silva is great at keeping the ball down and working the count, but struggled in the Metrodome because of poor defense and run support. A switch to the NL would do wonders for Silva, who is drawing interest from the Phillies, Braves, Cubs, and Padres. However, now that teams realize they will not lose a draft pick, expect the Mets, Astros, and maybe Diamondbacks to jump in on it. The Cubs are expected to be aggressive, but look at Silva as a fall back option more than some teams. I expect the Phillies to pursue him aggressively because they are desperate for pitching, but we will see what happens. Now that the Twins do not gain anything by losing him, they might overpay to bring him back.

Buchholz On Track, Schilling Out?

It appears Red Sox prospect Clay Buchholz is getting back on track, and is now on a designed off season plan to get him ready for Spring Training. Could this mean the Red Sox will let him walk and pursue other options, maybe upgrades in the bullpen? Probably, Schilling is likely heading to the National League after several teams contacted him about jobs in 2008. I think only a couple teams from his list are compatible with Schilling, and I will now tell you why:

Cleveland Indians:
The Indians have a solid core of players that are only getting better. However, their pitching is pretty good, but they are still looking for upgrades at the bottom half. It does not make sense to go after Schilling, who will only be with the team for one year. They are better off going after Kyle Lohse or Livan Hernandez.

Detroit Tigers: The Tigers are also not a great option for Schilling. Schilling has little experience in Detroit pitching in just two games, going 0-1 with a 6.43 ERA. The Tigers are right in the middle when it comes to fielding in the league, but the amount of money Schilling wants and the other needs of the Tigers, it just does not make sense. And now with Zumaya out, the Tigers are probably going to have to overpay to keep Todd Jones.

Anaheim Angels:
If the Angels are looking to go after Alex Rodriguez, there is simply no room for Curt Schilling. The Angels could probably support Schilling runs wise, but Reagins is a new GM who is looking to make a big splash, and it seems he sees that in Rodriguez.

New York Mets: The Mets would not be a bad spot for Schilling, but the Mets seem more interested in adding a younger player. The Mets have good offensive numbers, their bullpen seems pretty solid and getting better, and Schilling's numbers will look better in the NL. Not only that, but Schilling is 4-2 with a 3.05 ERA at Shea Stadium, and has had success against the other NL East teams.

Philadelphia Phillies:
Another great match, probably the best among the National League teams. He played in Philadelphia from 1992 to 1999, and had success there. The Phillies are a great team who are desperate for pitching, and are determined to upgrade. They made the playoffs and have one of the best infields in the game, and are looking to get better there as well. Schilling would be great behind some of their young guys because of his ability to keep the ball down and outsmart hitters.

Atlanta Braves: The Braves are going after Tom Glavine, not Curt Schilling. Glavine is a soft-spoken leader who will go out and pitch and help the team, along with the younger players. Schilling is more out-spoken and may be a distraction in the clubhouse. Frank Wren is on better terms with Glavine, and prefers to bring him in for one year.

Los Angeles Dodgers: The Dodgers would not be bad because they are looking for pitching, but may look to someone younger and more durable. Also, if they are looking to add a big name outfielder or third baseman named Alex Rodriguez, they do not have room for him.

San Diego Padres: The Padres are also looking for pitching, but must settle their problems in the outfield and at second base. They have Greg Maddux, and I think that is the only forty year old they want.

Arizona Diamondbacks: Probably the most likely out of the NL West teams because he pitched there. The Diamondbacks will probably lose Livan Hernandez, and bringing in Schilling to help lead the rotation would be great for one year, especially if they can repeat and get into the playoffs.

Chicago Cubs:
The Cubs have said they will look into signing Schilling, but only if they can trade Jason Marquis. I do not doubt they can trade Marquis, but they have needs that need to be address before pitching. Nonetheless, he would be a great mentor to pitcher Carlos Zambrano, and could definitely work with some of the younger guys who the Cubs will see next season.

St. Louis Cardinals:
The Cardinals have expressed interest and will probably make an offer as soon as he is available. They do not have much through trades because their system is so depleted, but could go after someone like Kyle Lohse or Carlos Silva. They also need to address other situations at third and the outfield.

Milwaukee Brewers:
The Brewers are also the final team on his list and if the Brewers make a strong push for him, I think Schilling might bite. They have a solid group of players that fell apart because of lack of experience. Also, by having Schilling, they have a strong negotiating chip in talks with Francisco Cordero. Furthermore, Schilling could mentor young pitchers Yovani Gallardo and Manny Para.

The Astros also contacted Schilling but I doubt Schilling wants to return. The team is in a funk right now and need some big upgrades to improve.

Mets Interested In Jennings

The Mets are among many teams that have asked about Jason Jennings, and it seems that the interest in genuine. The Mets will probably lose Tom Glavine and with Pedro Martinez's health in question, it makes sense to add another pitcher. Mike Pelfrey and Phillip Humber cannot be the backbone of their rotation, so adding a veteran like Jennings would definitely help their cause. Look what they did in 2006, they added Oliver Perez and Orlando Hernandez mid-season after both of them struggled and then they helped push the Mets through the playoffs. In 2007, they helped the Mets by combining to go 24-15 with a 3.64 ERA. Jennings struggled this year with the Astros going 2-9 with a 6.45 ERA and 71 K. But by adding another pitcher like Jennings or Livan Hernandez, it allows them to trade a package of players including Mike Pelfrey in order to land a big time player. He has also drawn interest from the Rockies, Cardinals, and Orioles, but I expect him to go to a potential contender.

Fogg Files For Free Agency

Once a joke of the Pirates organization, Josh Fogg has turned his career around and is set to cash in on the open market. In two seasons with the Rockies, he was 21-18 with a 5.21 ERA and 187 K, but his postseason success makes him more valuable because not only did he out pitch Jake Peavy to make it in, but he won two games with an ERA of 0.75 before getting rocked by the Red Sox in the World Series. Nonetheless, pitching in the clutch is huge and Fogg did it successfully several times. Not only that, but Fogg had a 9-4 record against teams with winning records this season. I expect him to get a deal in between Joel Piniero and Jason Marquis. Maybe a three year deal, worth 18-20 million dollars. For teams interested, the Orioles tried very hard to land him back in March and we could see them make another run for him. Fogg had success with the White Sox his rookie season and could return there if they look for a bottom end of the rotation type guy. I expect the Orioles to be all over him. Not only desperately trying to get him back in March, but Andy McPhail watched him pitch for several years down in Pittsburgh and knows his repertoire and what he is capable of. There has been no indication the Rockies want him back, suggesting they will look to sign a more effective pitcher.

Top 50 Free Agents: 31-40

Friday, November 2, 2007

31. Kyle Lohse, Phillies

Lohse did not exactly have an amazing year, but it was good enough to be drawing considerable interest. He was 9-12 with a 4.62 ERA and 122 K, and is expected to stay in the NL, upon requests from his agent Scott Boras. The Cubs and Diamondbacks are on good terms with Lohse, but if the price is right in Philadelphia, expect him to stay there.

Prediction: Phillies

32. Shannon Stewart, Athletics

Stewart was solid for the Athletics this season and deserves another chance to play everyday. He is a veteran and is just thirty-three, so I expect a two year deal, worth 2-3 million annually.

Prediction: Athletics

33. Kerry Wood, Cubs

Wood turned it around this year for the Cubs and is now a free agent. Despite a lot of interest generating from around the league, he has said he feels he owes something to the Cubs fans and I think he will stay, assuming the Cubs want him here.

Prediction: Cubs

34. Paul Lo Duca, Mets

Lo Duca will probably not be signed by the Mets as the Mets look for a catcher elsewhere. Lo Duca is still decent defensively and offensively, and I think he is better off with a young team like the Marlins. I expect the Padres to be players too, but they seem more interested in Kendall.

Prediction: Mets

35. Todd Jones, Tigers

With the reports that Joel Zumaya will be out for most of the 2008 season, it makes it more likely that they will bring Jones back for one more year. Zumaya has not overwhelmed anyone yet to hold the spot for him until he returns, so bringing back Jones makes sense so no pressure is on Zumaya to return.

Prediction: Tigers

36. Shawn Green, Mets

Shawn Green has said he is interested in returning to the Mets, but prefers to play on the West Coast. The Mets will definitely be looking for upgrades on the market, but will keep Green in their cards. I think Green will suit some teams on the West, but not a lot of them. I only see the Athletics, Rockies, and Padres as the likely destinations for Green, but the Rockies and Padres have not shown any interest. I see the Athletics as the most likely because the Rockies and Padres are looking at younger upgrades, but who knows if the A’s are really interested. It is possible to see his former team, the Blue Jays go after him.

Prediction: Blue Jays

37. Alexei Ramirez, Cuba

Ramirez is shaping up to be a favorite of the Braves now that Mike Cameron has been suspended for using illegal stimulants. Although the Braves have young outfielders waiting in the wings, Ramirez is a utility player who would switch to second base. Kelly Johnson looks like a likely trading chip down the road, opening the spot up for him if he does well. Ramirez will be cheap, and probably would prefer the Braves because there are two Cuban defectors on the team, and the team does not get as much media coverage as a team like the Mets or Yankees.

Prediction: Braves

38. Roger Clemens, Yankees

Roger Clemens faced some minor, but nagging injuries the whole season and I think he finally sees that he cannot keep going. If he comes back, he will probably only sign with the Yankees, Astros, or Dodgers.

Prediction: Retire

39. Geoff Jenkins, Brewers

Although the Tigers said they are not interested, I believe it is a creative negotiation plea to bring down his price as he looks for a job. Do not rule the Tigers out for Alexei Ramirez, or platooning Timo Perez in left field, but I see them bringing in Jenkins on a short term contract.

Prediction: Tigers

40. Tadahito Iguchi, Phillies

Iguchi was moved around this year but is hoping to find a starting spot with a team. He is very capable of being a starter somewhere and I see him going somewhere he is guaranteed that. Besides the Padres, the Astros seem like the most likely spot. They are looking for a solid upgrade, and Iguchi’s bat would definitely benefit the Astros at home. It looks like a perfect match.

Prediction: Astros

Luke Scott To Be Traded?

Although Luke Scott put up decent numbers for the Astros this year, they are displeased with his first half numbers and his work ethic, and are looking to trade him. Scott, 29, batted .255 with 18 HR and 64 RBI in 132 games. Not bad, but it could be better. There are several teams that could use an outfielder, but I have heard Scott has been struggling down in Venezuela, further lowering his value. Trading Scott would open up a spot to land a big time outfielder, probably Torii Hunter. But what the Astros need to do is focus on pitching and finding a middle infielder. I've been saying it for months that the Astros should go for Tadahito Iguchi for their second base spot, and then look to sign a proven pitcher. The Astros have money to spend, and could definitely use some upgrades so they can compete with the Brewers, Cubs, Cardinals, and improving Reds. As for Scott, I expect the Twins to be interested because of he bats from the left side, along with the Marlins, White Sox, Orioles, and maybe the Cardinals.

Number 27 Will Haunt Girardi

Thursday, November 1, 2007

I was very happy to hear that Joe Girardi would be named the next manager of the Yankees. For those of you that do not know, I am from Chicago and as I got into baseball, Girardi was emerging as the Cubs catcher. Believe or not, I even ran into him at a local establishment in the town I live in while he was visiting a friend, so I do have some personal connections to him, even though it was brief. But for some reason, I do not understand why he chose the number 27. He only puts more pressure on himself to win a World Series in 2008. I think it is perfectly appropriate to say we will win a World Series, but to go as far as put the goal on the back of your jersey, that is a little much. Maybe it is an aggressive plea to land a big free agent who is longing for a World Series, maybe Torii Hunter? I just think that he may be "jinxing himself" for the upcoming season, maybe even his time as Yankees manager. Now maybe nothing will happen and they will eventually win a World Series under Girardi, but if they don't, I'm sure some skeptics will say it was because he decided to don the number 27. Nonetheless, I fully expect Girardi to run a successful team, even if Rodriguez is not back with the Yankees. He does extensive research on all the teams he faces, and is familiar with the Yankees because he has been around them for the past several seasons. Now that Girardi is manager, it makes even more sense that they will go for Miguel Cabrera, who was managed by Girardi back in 2006. More will be determined in Spring Training when we can see the upgrades the Yankees have made, but I think Girardi should have reconsidered the decision to wear number 27.

Tony Clark To A's or Giants?

According to MLB Rumors Correspondent Steve Wilson, Diamondbacks negotiations with Tony Clark have turned even more south. There were reports earlier this week that said negotiations were at a minimum, and it seems they have come to a standstill. The Diamondbacks are simply unsure if they want to trade Connor Jackson or Chad Tracy, putting Clark's role with the team in question. Personally, I do not understand why they would trade Jackson. Clark would definitely like to be a starter, so he will probably look to the market for a starting role while continuing talks with the D'backs. The Athletics have been bringing in veteran free agents to fill their DH void over the past couple years and may look to do it again with Clark. Mike Piazza was not what they hoped for and is a free agent, so they will let him walk. Although they have Jack Cust, the A's may look to trade him while his interest is high for a couple young players. Clark would probably improve as a designated hitter despite his age, and could also work with Daric Barton at first base. Other than the A's, I expect the Giants to make a call. Ryan Klesko is a free agent and is expected to walk, so Tony Clark would be a great stop gap as they wait for Travis Ishikawa to develop. Another possibility for Clark is to see him return home to Kansas City, but Clark had the opportunity to sign there back in 2004, but chose the Diamondbacks. Clark batted .249 with 17 HR and 51 RBI this season for the Diamondbacks, but is a career .265 hitter with 244 HR. Clark, 36, could probably command a two year deal, worth 3-5 million dollars annually, a modest contract that a team like the A's could take on.

Giants entertaining offers for Lowry, Sanchez: The Giants are looking to trade one of their pitchers for a package of prospects or major league ready players, but are not interested in trading Lincecum or Cain. Noah Lowry did have a pretty solid year for the Giants and is just 27. I'm sure they can afford to unload him and worry about the repercussions. As for teams interested, the Phillies, Indians, Rockies, Mariners, Cubs, White Sox, and Cardinals are all looking for pitchers through trades, and have prospects that could suit the Giants. As for Sanchez, he is young and has a lot of upside, but I see him traded later next season once he can get his value up.

White Sox To Pass On Rowand?

The White Sox are planning a meeting with Torii Hunter, according to two sources. Kenny Williams plans to make a good pitch to Hunter, while not discussing a salary or years. The White Sox are going out of their way to meet with Hunter to discuss the benefits of switching teams in the same division, while discussing the direction of the team. I think this is a good move on their part, but it will defin
